Although Oscar Farinetti opened the first Eataly in Torino on January 27 of 2007 its Las Vegas iteration has seen nothing but turmoil since inception, everything from #metoo to a global pandemic shaping a landscape that began when The Monte Carlo changed to Park MGM with the arrival of professional sports next door.

Currently one of seven North American locations, an original idea to gather Italy’s biodiversity under one room adjusted to accommodate an area of predominantly tourists, it is beginning at 7:00am daily that guests can stop by for Breakfast, Espresso or Pastry with everything from Pizza to Pasta and Wine doing big volume by eleven or noon daily.

Informal with short waits and a diversity of choices, all but “La Pizza & La Pasta” offering diners the ability to grab-and-go or find a table, it was beginning at “La Pizzeria” that Roman Squares were found ready to visit the oven, a short wait yielding crisp base plus Foccacia-like rise amicable to diverse topping such as spicy Sausage or a pile of Prosciutto Cotto, Stracciatella, Olives, Mushrooms, Artichokes and Tomatoes.

Rightfully proud of Ingredients, the Market offering fair-priced Wines, Imported Meats and Cheese, “La Pasta Fresca” found itself temporarily sold out of some items on a busy Saturday while Meatballs were overworked and a bit too firm alongside excellent Tagliatelle topped in Bolognese Sauce that unfortunately lacks complexity.

Smart to make a reservation at La Pizza & La Pasta, a brief wait allowing time to explore “Italian Street Food” featuring the landmark Prime Rib Panini, it was after indulging in thinly-sliced Black Angus with perfectly rendered Fat that al dente Rigatoni alla Carbonara compared favorably to Rome in terms of taste as well as authenticity.

Citing Rossopomodoro Pizzaioli and specially-designed ovens as the source of Neapolitan Pizza, a leopard spotted crust sporting good flavor but inadequate rise, Dessert requires a walk to Caffé Lavaza and Pastry where Baba al Limoncello and Ricotta Arancia are peerless followed by a stop next door for Gelato in a cup, on a cone or stuffed in a freshly-fried Donut.

THREE AND A HALF STARS: Established as nothing less than “Eating Italian” a visit to Eataly can best be compared to a week-long guided tour from Torino to Napoli, an all-encompassing 40,000-square-feet hitting the high points while at the same time barely scratching the surface of what is available in each region.

RECOMMENDED: Capricciosa Roman Pizza, Prime Rib Panini, Rigatoni alla Carbonara, Baba al Limoncello, Ricotta Arancia, Bombolato.

AVOID: Tagliatelle alla Bolognese, Polpette al Pomodor.

TIP: Nevada residents receive an ongoing 10% discount on all retail, non-menu items in the marketplace and in the wine shop.
