Do-Rite Donuts and Fried Chicken
Fried Chicken Sandwich
Baked Chocolate Vegan Donut
Double Chocolate Cake Donut
Not particularly impressed by previous visits to Do-Rite – particularly when compared to Doughnut Vault, Stan’s, or Firecakes – but willing to give their second location a chance it was just thirty minutes before closing on Labor Day that our small group approached the Streeterville storefront and with options expectedly limited only a small sampling would follow, the donuts themselves again nothing special while crispy chicken sandwiches instead stole the show. Decidedly small, though slightly larger than the original, with wallside counter dining and a half-dozen tables outside it was to just two remaining styles of donut that we were greeted and settling on one of each largely out of curiosity the chocolate cake was moist and rich while the baked ‘vegan’ version was a veritable sponge, the cake itself leaving mouths dry while thick frosting was nothing more than nondescriptly sweet. Moving from donuts to chicken fresh from the fryer it was surprisingly with something savory that the donut shop excelled and while my sister’s fiancée enjoyed the spiced up riff on Tennessee ‘hot chicken’ I personally preferred the well brined and double fried bird on a soft roll without the heat, a flavor profile somewhat akin to Chick-fil-A, but far more juicy with a beautiful crackle to the overlying buttermilk lacquered skin.
RECOMMENDED: Chicken Sandwich, and from previous visits the carrot cake and peanut butter and jelly bulls-eye (if available.)
AVOID: Vegan Donut, and from previous visits the Buttermilk Old Fashioned.
TIP: Visited before a screening of Boyhood at the nearby AMC it should be noted that while walking from place to place we encountered a sign for a second Stan’s Doughnuts just down the street, a good sign of things to come for the folks working in and around Streeterville and far more worthy the walk from Michigan Ave than either location of Do-Rite.
