When it was announced that a colleague would be leaving the office his affinity for Carrot Cake immediately warranted calling in a favor, Chris Decker and John Arena setting aside a slice of Metro’s textbook version in addition to several Pastries from Lulu’s Bread & Breakfast.
First visited in 2013 for Pastries prior to house-hunting and since becoming a frequent destination for Breakfast or Pizza at Metro next-door, the hour round-trip drive universally proving justified but on this day left to delivery, it was just past 8:30am that items arrived on a nicely arranged platter, just five staff partaking in pieces of eight items that began with a fluffy Butter Croissant followed by another that had been sliced in half and filled with a big spoonful of Nutella.
Moving next to another laminated Pastry piped with two tubes of Chocolate, the Powdered Sugar making a mess of black scrubs and probably more properly enjoyed over a plate or table, it was with lesson learned that a Cream Cheese Danish was carefully savored for each delicious and creamy bite while seated, the spiral filled with Raisins and Custard rightfully saved for last and even better than when tasted in June thanks to a lighter bake that left some parts still jiggly.
FIVE STARS: Although John and Chris may indeed be Pizza Guys there is no way to make a good Pie without understanding Bread and whether laminated, Pretzel or the housemade Loaves given to every table at Metro Pizza these two do it right.
RECOMMENDED: Cream Cheese Danish, Raisin Custard Danish, Nutella Croissant.
AVOID: N/A but be aware that Carrot Cake is actually from Metro’s menu beginning at 11am…unless you ask really nicely.
TIP: 7a-3p daily, though best items do occasionally sell out early on weekends.
WHAT THE STARS MEAN: 5 World Class, 4 Excellent, 3 Good, 2 Fair, 1 Poor.
