With locations in Tarzana and Silverlake Magpies Softserve represents the vision of owners Rose and Warren Schwartz, their self-professed dream of owning a Dessert Shop coming to fruition in 2016 and lines to this day indicating they’re doing something a little different from the likes of Mister Softee or Dairy Queen.
Espousing words like scratch-made and artisan to describe the concept, a collection of flavors hatched from nostalgia and childhood memories developed during a Korean American upbringing, it is from bases both Dairy and Vegan that guests are invited to taste before making selections, the smoothness expected but complexity frankly unprecedented and nearly reaching the level of nearby Scoop Shops.
Taking on the status quo with an array of international flavors, Lady Grey inspired by Tea and Horchata virtually identical to the Cinnamon Rice Milk found at any authentic Mexican joint in town, it was after samples including airy Toasted Marshmallow that choices were made, a bowl of Horchata weighted out with housemade Sprinkles plus one slice of Softserve Pie.
Not inexpensive but less pricy than Jeni’s or Salt & Straw by volume, the total just under $10 including tax and tip for friendly service (plus an extra sample past Magpies listed limit off two,) it was from a plastic clamshell that one of Rose’s best-sellers was unlocked, the “Fried Softserve Pie” originally created as a to-go option spawning several other crusted concoctions though it is hard to imagine any rival the marvelous texture of Vegan Corn Almond Soft Serve atop a Graham Crust with Vegan Fudge, Non-Dairy Whipped Cream and Corn Flakes plus Honeycomb Candy for crunch.
