Inspired by travel and undoubtedly firm believers that not all who wander are lost it was pointing the GPS East that a stop was made at Wanderlust Creamery, the Atwater Village location not far from the former home of Canelé and their global collection of flavors amongst the most innovative and delicious tasted across America.
Owned and operated by Jon-Patrick Lopez and Adrienne Borlongan, the former lawyer providing financial backing to Ms. Borlongan’s talents fostered in Food Science, guests entering the shop at 3134 Glendale Boulevard will quickly notice the lack of cutesy design, a clean layout with some plants plus a board displaying flavors like destinations the only real additions to indoor and outdoor seating besides a chalkboard globe.
Offering several signatures and seasonal specials across four locations including that at Smorgasburg, the net cast wide and encompassing everything from Peru to Iceland, it was starting with what appears to be limitless samples that choices were made to construct ones perfect combination, those fond of fruit all raving “Alpine Forest Fruits” that see tart ribbons suspended in Gruyere Mousse while Smoky Road takes pointers from Campfire S’mores to reinvent a classic.
Trying best to pick complimentary flavors for a triple, the housebaked purple Cone clearly fresh and still with a bit of flex, it was from top to bottom that Iceland brought sweet and salty with distinct Rye notes before moving on Portuguese Egg Custard and broken bits of Shell, the final bites saved for what amounts to deconstructed Nutella under the name “Kinder Bueno” that, although European in origin, still means “Good.”
