Established in 1916 and inhabiting Providence’s historic Federal Hill for over one hundred years it was as part of Christmas Day that Scialo Bros. Bakery was called upon, a catering order plus several added items attesting to Old World technique while staff embodies the sort of customer service that is pleasant yet concise.
Built by Luigi Scialo who came to Providence from Pomigliano d’Arco in Italy, and still operated by his daughters to this day, it is immediately upon entering 257 Atwells Avenue that guests are thrust back in time, the scent of Yeast and Vanilla hanging heavy as stocked shelves beckon in all directions of a space that likely looks no different now than it did on opening day.
Using family recipes and focused on quality, a refusal to utilize preservatives making Scialo Brothers a 24-hour operation since everything is baked on-site daily, it was after several moments’ indecision that items were packaged and purchased, everything done with care and easily surviving twenty minutes drive plus twenty-four hours storage.
Employing only one gas oven for the whole store, a recommendation to order early at holidays strongly advised, it was along with Coffee that tasting began with three mixed pounds of Cookies, Macaroons both Chocolate-dipped and plain an early highlight though not to be outshined were Butter Cookies with Sprinkles and delicate Amaretti rounds.
Unfortunately not offering scratch-made Sfogliatelle during a season when the labor-intensive process would interfere with high volume, a layered wedge of Carrot Cake and creamy Cheesecake atop dense Chocolate instead standing-in as day-of indulgences, it was for both Breakfast and Dessert that two whole Cakes were cut and served, the famous Ricotta Pie a lot like Flan but with more sweetness while the Rum Cake surrounded by Lady Fingers ate something like Trifle thanks to fresh Fruit, Jam and moisture added by Booze to the Sponge.
