Ending 2018 with Rosallie’s Almond Croissant again on the year-end top-10 list, the flaky layers and hand-ground Almond Filling still better than any Viennoiserie tasted in the past 365-days, it was in celebration of Epiphany that January brought about Galette des Rois, and like everything else from Jonathan and Christophe the result was exemplary.
Served in celebration of The Three Wise Men’s visit to Christ, the name King Cake not to be confused with Sugar-shellacked braids offered during pre-Lenten Mardi Gras, Rosallie’s version of the Cake takes on a traditional form featuring myriad layers of Puff Pastry wrapped around Almond Paste, an Egg Wash and plenty of Butter browning the top and allowing higher than average baking temperatures.
Pre-ordered for $34 and enough to feed 10-12, the “feve” a tiny porcelain favor hidden inside which gives its finder the title of queen/king for the day, there is additionally a $5.99 individually-portioned Almond Pie featuring the same technique sold at 6090 South Rainbow Boulevard, and of course the standard array of new and old favorites including miniature Croissants and a Valentine’s Day White Lady filled with housemade Raspberry Filing.
FIVE STARS: Still Las Vegas’ best choice for French Pastry Jonathan and the team at Rosallie have rolled from Buche de Noel to Galette des Rois without missing a beat, and whether for Breakfast, Lunch or early Dinner Le French Café remains a cozy respite with the sort of environment and service one simply doesn’t find many places these days.
