Almond Croissant

Nougatbrezel

Kirschwalnusskuchen

Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte

Tucked amongst the shops and eateries of Schweizer Strasse, and open at 08h00 on weekdays or 09h00 on weekends, Sachsenhäuser Feinbäckerei offers a curated selection of well-crafted French and German fare including several Cakes and Pastries.

Opened in 2013 and earning a reputation of quality ever since, the owner present and happy to discuss his products in fluent English on Thursday morning, it was on his suggestion that items previously tasted elsewhere all fared well, the Almond Croissant unfilled but instead perfumed by nutty liquor that played well of Butter, Marzipan and Powdered Sugar.

Moving next to a Nougatbrezel, the most famous item at Cologne’s Merzenich here better in terms of texture as well as flavor, it was in follow-up that Sour Cherries impressed two-fold, the Coffee Cake with Walnut Streusel carefully balancing sweet, bitter and sour in each bite while Sachsenhäuser Feinbäckerei’s Black Forest Cake used thinner layers of Chocolate Sponge and Pastry Cream than many but could have benefitted from a bit more Fruit, or at least a thicker slice for 4€.
