Despite living in Las Vegas for the last four years and visiting several times prior it was in 2017 that the first Thanksgiving was celebrated locally, the decision to not cook but instead outsource those responsibilities to great Chefs and friends proving a big hit with everyone at the table from adults to a child just four years old.
Originally devised as a way to feed a group of just five but quickly expanding to eight, a “the more the merrier” approach allowing even more Chefs to be incorporated in the mix, it was with orders placed at favorites such as CRAFTkitchen, Rosallie, Hexx, Yardbird and Carson Kitchen plus a recipe from Sean Griffin at Jean Georges Steakhouse that the meal took place, items collected the day prior and on Thanksgiving all easily rewarmed at home and served just after 5:00pm.
Having already enjoyed a prior meal out plus Pastries from Jaret Blinn and Beth Ryan-Small at CRAFTkitchen, the seasonal Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffin and Gluten Free Caramel Apple Muffin worth a drive from anywhere in town and still available today, it was from CRAFTkitchen’s Thanksgiving menu that trays of Truffle Mashed Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes with Marshmallows and Cranberry Stuffing were selected along with two Pies, every bit of it as delicious as one might expect but the Pumpkin Cheesecake easily the most impressive with great density but not an overly abundant amount of Cinnamon, Nutmeg or sweetness.
Eventually deciding on Turkey from the team at Hexx, Manager Ari Stotland making a curbside delivery of more than five pounds of roasted Breast and highly praised deep-fried Confit from Chef Carlos Buscaglia for just $75 including tax, it was up Las Vegas Boulvard that the next stop was made at Yardbird for their Chess Pie plus Mama’s Biscuits, tastes of the Southern Slaw with Chicken Cracklins’ plus Thanksgiving Stuffing and Sprouts making the Southern Table + Bar a top contender for dining out at the holidays if in town next season.
Settling for nothing less than the best for Apple Pie, Jonathan Pluvinet’s Tart with Apricot Glaze only rivaled with Jean-Georges’ for best in town but the one from Rosallie far more portable, it was instead from Chef Griffin’s Summer Corn that a recipe was adapted, the use of frozen Kernels not quite as good as that at the city’s best Steakhouse in mid-season but convincing enough that nearly three pounds was consumed through the course of the evening.
Rounding out the meal with Potato Pull-Aparts from Chef Blinn plus Carson Kitchen’s Bacon Jam and Brie, these two making even better mates than the Toasted Baguette with which the Jam is served downtown, it was with stuffed stomachs and a little bit of Football that the night came to a close, the leftovers on Black Friday plentiful with Pie for breakfast never a bad thing.
