Born in the era of #instagram, logo-walls surrounding tight seating an almost unmistakable calling card for spaces built after 2017, it was as a party of three that seats were taken inside U : Dessert Story on Tuesday evening, the nearly hour-long queue a testament to the concept’s appeal though thankfully circumvented by making a 9:30pm reservation several days in advance.
No doubt targeting a younger crowd, all but two others including staff Asian and under the age of thirty, it was with friendly smiles and apologies for a short wait that guests ranging thirty-nine to sixty-eight years old were offered comfortable seats along the Restaurant’s left side, a combination of thumping music and frenetic pacing at times distracting but largely just fuel for the experience.
Easily located in The Castro as the only place with a line out the door after dark, the space at 3489 16th Street shining like a beacon from a distance, it was having already perused the menu while waiting that decisions came easy, prices ranging $8-$15 yielding mostly sharable selections save for a textbook Crepe Cake made from Young Coconut and served with Sauce so smooth and sweet that each guest will likely want a slice of their own.
Making no mistake in presenting each item camera-ready, a smoking mountain of crushed ice attracting onlookers across the way, it was in the less conspicuous Mango Sticky Rice Bingsoo that $8.50 was invested, both texture and flavor delightful thanks to a combination of Seeds, Snow and Fruit while Honey Brick Toast was unfortunately a bit overcooked and thus dry around exposed edges, but otherwise enjoyable and not overly sweet like so many others.
