Steakhouse Sweet Potato Fries

Apparently not a popular tourist destination, nearly every independently-owned Restaurant in Providence taking December 26th off, it was at Julians that five guests sat down to Breakfast, a 9:00am arrival assuring one of perhaps two-dozen tables that remain hot tickets even as the space approaches twenty-five years serving the area.

Founded by Julian Forgue in 1994 and well-known for both Beer and Bean Burgers, the former coming from twenty Taps while the other has spawned a substantial Vegan menu and following, it was with no dietary restrictions that diners perused options ranging Salads to Pancakes while a list of specials also looked tempting.

Dining with a well-behaved infant, the tatted female server clearly aware but apparently too busy to provide a highchair in plain sight, it was after orders were placed that the seat was procured by mother, nothing about the service improving henceforth even as relates to forgotten Fries since Julians seems to embrace hipster nonchalance as a paradigm.

Decorated in random knickknacks, Pez dispensers in the Restroom and Homer Simpson at the bar, it was after a short wait that Beverages were poured, the Beans a bold local roast whether by drip or served as Providence’s famous “Coffee Milk” while a $5 Mug of Nutella Hot Chocolate is probably best saved for those who like things cloyingly sweet.

Not waiting long for food, the team at 318 Broadway having mastered the art of “turn & burn,” it was immediately on delivery that haphazard technique took center stage, first bites of Daily Special French Toast finding Bread poorly penetrated by Custard and the Bananas under-ripened though the Granola, Syrup and Nutella helped at least make the majority of bites enjoyable.

Moving next to “Winifred Sanderson” Pancakes, a Vegan plate that looked as though it was assembled by a child, suffice it to say that it was more the lack of leavening than Butter or Milk that made each of three discs far too dense, a follow-up of Chicken & Waffles good for the Bird while the Waffles themselves were so flaccid and flavorless that even a one-year-old refused and instead focused on the late-arriving Sweet Potato wedges.

Established in 1916 and inhabiting Providence’s historic Federal Hill for over one hundred years it was as part of Christmas Day that Scialo Bros. Bakery was called upon, a catering order plus several added items attesting to Old World technique while staff embodies the sort of customer service that is pleasant yet concise.

Built by Luigi Scialo who came to Providence from Pomigliano d’Arco in Italy, and still operated by his daughters to this day, it is immediately upon entering 257 Atwells Avenue that guests are thrust back in time, the scent of Yeast and Vanilla hanging heavy as stocked shelves beckon in all directions of a space that likely looks no different now than it did on opening day.

Using family recipes and focused on quality, a refusal to utilize preservatives making Scialo Brothers a 24-hour operation since everything is baked on-site daily, it was after several moments’ indecision that items were packaged and purchased, everything done with care and easily surviving twenty minutes drive plus twenty-four hours storage.

Employing only one gas oven for the whole store, a recommendation to order early at holidays strongly advised, it was along with Coffee that tasting began with three mixed pounds of Cookies, Macaroons both Chocolate-dipped and plain an early highlight though not to be outshined were Butter Cookies with Sprinkles and delicate Amaretti rounds.

Unfortunately not offering scratch-made Sfogliatelle during a season when the labor-intensive process would interfere with high volume, a layered wedge of Carrot Cake and creamy Cheesecake atop dense Chocolate instead standing-in as day-of indulgences, it was for both Breakfast and Dessert that two whole Cakes were cut and served, the famous Ricotta Pie a lot like Flan but with more sweetness while the Rum Cake surrounded by Lady Fingers ate something like Trifle thanks to fresh Fruit, Jam and moisture added by Booze to the Sponge.

PQR, New York NY

PQR

Burrata and Basil Slice / Genovese Cherry Tomato Slice

Smoked Provolone, Bacon, Pumpkin Slice / Mozzarella and Marinara Slice

Soppressata Slice

Opened in March of 2018 by Rome’s Angelo Iezzi it was based on good word of mouth that PQR was visited on Christmas Eve, a location at 1631 Second Avenue near the 86th Street Subway creating just the sort of convenience needed to survive on New York’s Upper East Side, though the Pizza itself will decide whether long-term success will follow.

An acronym for Pizza Quadrata Romana and selling Roman-style Pizza by the slice, a style of service different from the weighing at Gabriele Bonci’s shops in Chicago, it is immediately upon entering PQR that guests are face-to-face with the end of a counter, at least twenty combinations of toppings widening eyeballs atop heavily fermented Dough both held and served at room temperature.

Considered by contemporaries to be pioneer of modern Roman Pizza, Iezzi even going so far as to start a school teaching his technique, it is by way of high hydration and lengthy leavening that squares achieve good rise, the bottom not crackling like Bonci but at the same time not Sicilian-soft and a Margherita wedge costing $4.50.

Also a runner-up to Bonci in terms of toppings, the Ingredient quality equal but not nearly as diverse, it was following creamy Burrata and Basil that Slices topped in Soppressata proved spicy yet herbaceous, the Cheese-free Genovese Cherry Tomato Slice additionally focusing on simplicity though unfortunately a bit damp from top to bottom, perhaps as a result of sitting out too long on a Holiday.

Finishing with Bacon and Caramelized Pumpkin covered by smoked Provolone, the suspicion that Slices had been baked several hours prior again roused by a rough texture to the Cheese, it was nonetheless with good service that Water was filled frequently on request as a party of four relaxed in a quiet back dining area that feels miles from the streets of Manhattan.

Hungarian Pastry Shop

Chocolate Chip Cookie

Apple Strudel

Dobos Torte

In the area thanks to Mama’s Too! it was with fond memories of Grandma’s baking that a stop was made at The Hungarian Pastry Shop, a location at 1030 Amsterdam Avenue near Columbia University virtually guaranteeing a crowd even though the Pastries themselves are rarely authentic and clearly more focused on being everything to everyone than region specificity.

Close to St. John the Divine, and densely populated by college kids even on Christmas Eve, it was while waiting in line that whiteboards and cases were perused for favorites, a lack of Kolaches, Kiffles or Hókifli in the presence of a Nutella-themed Cake called “Times Square,” Baklava and Cheesecake telling of a space where dollars are valued over heritage.

Trying to make the best of it, the lack of WiFi or electrical outlets plus overly loud conversations justifying al fresco dining in 50ᵒF weather, it was per a man behind the counter that The Hungarian Pastry Shop confirmed Walnut Strudel was discontinued because “no one buys it,” a switch to Apple turning out well enough as the gently warmed wedge was flaky and filled with Fruit without being overly sweet.

Apparently owned by a Greek family despite the name, and selling everything from Scones and Croissants to Linzer Tarts or Napoleons, it was by request from an 11-year-old that a Chocolate Chip Cookie was ordered and found to be dry without much flavor, the Dobos Torte to follow compromised by too much Frosting and not enough Sponge in comparison to old world recipes or even the more Americanized version popular in New Orleans.

MAMA’S TOO!, New York NY

MAMA’S TOO!

Cacio e Pepe Slice / Poached Pear, Gorgonzola, Hot Honey Slice / Mushroom and Caramelized Onion Slice

Pepperoni Slice

The House Pizza

Owned by Frank Tuttolomondo, his parent’s Restaurant titled Mama’s Pizza just a few blocks away, it was by way of an ecstatic Pete Well’s review that Mama’s TOO! became a destination, though word of the young man’s top quality Pies had already been circulating amongst legendary Pizza makers like John Arena several months prior.

Located at 2750 Broadway, and now easily identifiable by a line that begins before opening daily, Mama’s TOO! is, in reality, a tiny and unassuming space with just six seats along a countertop plus one large oven, the staff of three including Frank working non-stop to keep up with demand for what the Times called “The New York Slice that slices through tradition.”

At this point offering take-out slices only, though a menu to the right suggests this was not always the case, it is while in queue that guests will hear staff repeatedly turn down phone-calls for both pre-order and delivery, a first case of five Pies gone quick and replaced by more though by 12:30pm there is already a second group of guests gathered to the side specifically awaiting Pepperoni squares.

Selling both triangular Slices and what most would call Sicilian-style, the “House Pizza” one of the former and readily capable of standing straight when supported by just the Cornicione, it is by laying down Mozzarella first that the two-day fermented Crust is protected from becoming soggy, a “fold” down the middle causing light crackles beneath added Tomato chunks, Parmigiano-Reggiano and Basil.

Using gas ovens instead of coal or wood, and thus better able to control temperatures that differ between upper and lower chambers, it is after removal from pans that square slices are placed directly up top, the following minutes creating a deep golden color and craggy base that eats like a Grandma-slice with more lift or Detroit-style but lighter.

Offering much more than just Pepperoni, though many are willing to stand aside and wait up-to-forty minutes for Mr. Wells favorite, there is no doubt that charred Cups, Cheese and Tomatoes are tasty, but for the same price of $4 per square there is equally as much to love about four Cheeses and plenty of Black Pepper or Poached Pears and Gorgonzola with Hot Honey added after baking, though the real standout on this day was heavily caramelized Onions and Wild Mushrooms that flooded the palate while additionally offering textural contrast to the crunchy edges overlapped by Cheese.

Levain Bakery (Amsterdam Avenue,) New York NY

Levain Bakery

Banana Chocolate Chip Bread

Valrhona Roll

Oatmeal Cookie

Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip Cookie

With four locations including one in the Hamptons it was rekindling forgotten love that a stop was made at Levain Bakey on Christmas Eve, the space at 351 Amsterdam Avenue showcasing many of the same delicious items last tasted in Harlem mid-2013 and adding a few additional inspirations as well.

Still sold as the “simple mission between two great friends to create the world’s greatest Chocolate Chip Cookie,” their version with Walnuts wowing crowds for nearly twenty-five years, it is actually not far from the original Levain Bakery (which still generates lines) that Constance McDonald and Pamela Weekes opened the Upper West Side store in 2017, a small seating area proving just perfect to sit and indulge in their famous 6oz rounds or other treats.

Having already tasted the original plus several other items across two visits, and willing to do so again, it was after lengthy debate that the decision was instead made to invest nearly $20 in mostly new things, the Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip and Oatmeal Raisin both repeats with the former remaining an all-time favorite thanks to its crisp exterior and still-gooey middle featuring lots of Dark Chocolate riddled by sweetened Peanut Butter Morsels.

Certainly not a place to count calories, particularly around the holidays, it was bypassing Pizza which also looked tempting that two more sweets were added, a wedge of Banana Chocolate Chip Bread moist and dense with Fruit plus chunks of Valrhona that also formed the molten core of a yeasty Roll that is virtually guaranteed to make a mess as pieces are torn off and dipped Fondue or “Bread Bowl” style.

Récolte

Maple Lover

Almond Croissant

Kouign Amann

Caramel Sweetie

Canele

Dark Chocolate Canele

Launched in late-2017 and recently making noise by way of a pending collaboration with Michael Laiskonis it was on Christmas Eve that Récolte was visited, the Upper West Side space not yet busy having unlocked doors just minutes prior but shelves and racks nonetheless packed with Pastries both familiar and unique.

Owned by Allen Wang of Kung Fu Tea, and designed by Pastry Chef Peng-Chieh Wang, Récolte offers items built on classic French technique with nod to the East, the use of Japanese Flour one part of the formula but items featuring Yuzu, Matcha and Mandarin also rotating through the lineup based on season.

French for “harvest,” a bounty of Breads featuring various types of Grain dominating the right half of 300 Amsterdam Avenue while Desserts reside left, it was progressing down the line that six items were selected to the tally of $20, first bites of an item labeled “Maple Lover” finding the Viennoiserie well laminated but not particularly sweet and a bit soft on the exterior while an Almond Croissant was more crisp thanks to baked Frangipane on the surface that was thankfully absent within.

Onward next to Kouign Amann, Wang’s version leavened longer than most and thus tall but light with crisp layers throughout, it was on the recommendation of a staff member that “Caramel Sweetie” followed, the texture akin to Bread Pudding baked like a Drop Biscuit while Canele were hit and miss, the Dark Chocolate version surprisingly perfect in terms of structure despite a lot of Cocoa while a more traditional version had seen Custard set oddly to create a dense and gummy center.

Lilia, New York NY

Lilia

Cacio e Pepe Frittelle

Prosciutto, Balsamic Mustard, Parmigiano Butter

Sheeps Milk Cheese Agnolotti, Saffron, Dried Tomato, Honey

Mafaldini, Pink Peppercorn, Parmigiano

Squash Ravioli, Hazelnuts, Parmigiano, Rosemary

Ricotta Gnocchi, Broccoli Pesto, Basil, Pistachios

Olive Oil Cake, Figs, Grappa, Whipped Cream

Love it or hate it the trend of Restaurants featuring high volume and dim lighting has got legs, and on Sunday night in Williamsburg it was as a party of three that such things were tolerated to see what the buzz was about at Lilia, Missy Robbins’ still white hot space that is almost ready to celebrate its third anniversary.

Located at 567 Union Avenue and thus highly convenient via subway from Manhattan, the Bedford Avenue station just a few blocks walk, it was arriving fifteen minutes prior to a reservation booked exactly thirty days prior that guests were whisked away to a table, service pleasant but grating thanks to both over-explaining and recommending *everything* yet somehow failing to mention several daily specials.

No stranger to Robbins’ Cuisine, visits to both Spiaggia and A Voce occurring during her tenure, it was after brief perusal of labeled sections that the decision was made to order in four courses with a focus on Pasta, though first it seemed pertinent to take a look at Lilia’s oft-praised Cacio e Pepe Frittelle which eat like cheesy Popovers plus a plate of imported Charcuterie that comes with far too little housemade Bread for the sizable quenelle of Butter infused with Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Forced to ask for more Bread, three slices arriving room temperature almost fifteen minutes later with the first pair of Pastas, it was within one bite that surrounding annoyances including two diners making out were easily ignored, the tubular Agnolotti stuffed with Sheep’s Milk and perfumed by Saffron beautifully juxtaposed by Honey and Sundried Tomatoes while springy Ribbons of Pasta called Mafaldini lived up to accolades as Robbins’ best dish both in terms of taste and texture despite fairly simple toppings of Cheese and Pepper.

Certainly not a place that will ever be accused of rushing to turn a table, nearly half-an-hour between clearing course two and the arrival of another duo, it was unfortunately a bit too much Basil that compromised creamy Gnocchi while pockets of Squash were offered more subtly with Rosemary and Hazelnuts, the choice of just one Dessert to finish largely based on the late hour and a long day of eating but mostly enjoyable as crumbly Cake offered a gently sweetend base for Figs, a splash of Grappa plus plenty of Whipped Cream.

Yuzu Dacquoise, Green Tea Cookie, Walnut Crunch, Lavender Mint Cookie

Opened late-2013 in Williamsburg, and undoubtedly benefited by overflowing lines at Missy Robbins’ Lilia, it was prior to dinner that a stop was made at Patisserie Tomoko, Chef Tomoko Kato found hard at work replenishing a case depleted by the holiday rush while a man and woman acting as manager and baker took care of a Restaurant full of customers.

Small in size but sizable in aspirations, Chef Kato’s time at Le Bernadin and Bouley creating the desire to open a shop of her own, it was around 7:30pm that three guests entered 568 Union Avenue, a warm welcome followed by seats at the left-end of a rounded bar with a full view of the action.

Specializing in Japanese-influenced French Pastry, the choice to order a la carte, Prix Fixe or to-go allowing guests to customize their experience alongside Wine or Coffee, it is worth noting that Patisserie Tomoko is most certainly not a Boba or Bubble Tea shop, the experience instead subtle and nuanced both in terms of the Cuisine and music playing softly overhead.

Prone to frequent menu changes, seasonality clearly one focus, it was with intense Cold Brew Coffee that tasting began with items from the case, a “Salty Caramel Nut Tart” topped before serving in housemade Whipped Cream that helped mellow its sweetness while neither the carefully-stacked Berry Mille Crepe nor Black Sesame Dacquoise Cookie required such since each was extremely delicate with the latter in particular standing out as a result of exterior layers nearly as light as Meringue.

Moving next to one shared three-course Prix Fixe, a sliver of Pumpkin Cheesecake marrying its spice profile nicely to Chai Ice Cream as an “amuse,” further love of Winter followed by way of deconstructed Sweet Potato Apple Cake, the texture essentially that of Bread Pudding with Fruit and Bread suspended in Custard and presented warm beneath a melting ball of Maple Almond Ice Cream.

Finishing with Mignardises, half of another Dacquioise featuring Yuzu again beautiful and light, it was leaving Lavender and Mint to others that Patisserie Tomoko finished up with a buttery Green Tea Cookie, the Matcha largely unsweetened but nonetheless held in check by buttery Shortbread.

Bourbon Vanilla on a Sugar Cone / Cookies & Cream on a Sugar Cone

Koppelman Ice Cream Cake – Peanut Butter Cake, Picoso’s Peanut Praline Ice Cream, Concord Grape Jelly

Opened by Nicholas Morgenstern in 2014 it was on the advice of friends that a stop was made at Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream on Sunday, the new shop bigger than their Bowery flagship and not quite as busy in the days before Christmas as mid-Summer but eighty-eight flavors nonetheless available in addition to Cakes, Pies and several housemade Toppings.

Found at 490 LaGuardia Place and resembling a classic Ice Cream parlor, the multitude of options displayed on a board hanging over glass cases filled by small-batch tubs, guests are invited to peruse sections arranged by bases such as “Vanillas,” “Tropics,” and “Sorbets” before making a selection, the limit of two samples per guest only fair to avoid lengthy queues, though at least a dozen visits would be necessary to determine whether Morganstern’s execution is uncompromised across the collection.

Utilizing no additives or stabilizers, high-Fat Milk and quality ingredients instead used to focus flavors ranging from Chocolate to Coffee or Fruit, it was after one taste of Cookies and Cream that an 11-year-old was sold but willing to taste French Fry, the flavor salty and spot-on while Sesame Caramel and Peaches in Clotted Cream each also showed a skilled hand at mixing sweet and savory.

Seeing the boy’s mother delighted by rich Bourbon Vanilla, one sizable $5.10 dip served atop a housemade Sugar Cone, it was after lengthy debate that a slice of Koppelman Ice Cream Cake rounded out the visit, everything taken outside to enjoy in temperatures above 50ᵒF and the combination of Peanut Butter Sponge, Peanut Praline Ice Cream plus layers of Concord Grape Jelly all performing beautifully.

Pastel Tres Leches – Sponge Cake, 3 Milks, Goat Milk Caramel

An annual recipient of one Michelin Star since 2015 it is, in fact, not Celebrity Chef Enrique Olvera who has earned such accolades in New York City, but instead Chef Cosme Aguilar at Casa Enrique on Long Island City where the native of Chiapas has been cooking the food of his homeland and quietly earning accolades ever since opening.

Not formerly trained but instead turning to Restaurant-life in search of money around age twenty, the intention then a return home, it was instead during a stint at nearby Café Henri that Aguliar quickly moved up the ranks, ownership’s eventual decision to open a second Restaurant giving the young man a break where hard work has yielded originally unexpected results.

Approximately twenty minutes by train from Midtown, and still one of New York’s few areas lacking a plethora of quality eats, guests will find Casa Enrique located next to a playground on 49th Ave, the exterior well-kept but in no way announcing anything remarkable though once one steps through the doors a fully-packed house and alluring smells both indicate something special is happening in the kitchen.

Ironic that Cosme and Enrique are both shared names between this and Manhattan’s more-famous Mexican Restaurant, a nearby four-top overheard mistakenly discussing Casa Enrique’s ties to Pujol in Mexico City at one point, it was from a Russian server that Water was poured as menus were distributed, the multicultural nature of New York here on full-display as diners included African Americans, Asians, Caucasians and native Spanish speakers.

Divided across two rooms and prominently showing soccer, the casual nature of Brunch featuring slightly lower prices than dinner, it was with Horchata for the child and a bracing Grapefruit Cocktail for the lady that things got started, pint-sized Duros paired with housemade Salsas whetting appetites before thin and crispy Tortillas arrived covered in vibrant red, green and white with up-front heat that quickly dissipated into a creamy finish.

Known for Mole, though not a dish commonly associated with Chef Aguilar’s home-state, entrée two featured three Corn Enchiladas stuffed with Chicken and smothered in smoky Brown Sauce, the taste of Cocoa prominent though not in a sweet manner as diverse spices smoldered in a way completely different from $19 Menudo bolstered by Ancho Chilis and made richer than most by including Bone Marrow alongside plenty of velvety Tripe.

Justifying prices with large servings, even late-night revelers nursing a serious hangover likely to have trouble finishing such a sizable bowl of Soup or Chilaquiles that remain crunchy bite after bite after bite, those seeking a sharable Dessert during brunch need look no further than Custard-soaked French Toast cooked Crisp and served with Molasses plus Fruit and Candied Pepitas, though that most certainly is not advice to skip Tres Leches that is wet but not mushy – it is a suggestion to order one per diner to avoid fights over the last Caramel-and-Milk-soaked bite.

Chocolate Babka Coffee Cake

Apricot Persian Love Cake

In an era when Instagram has greatly influenced the way Pastry Chefs are forced to think a number of recent visits to New York have found Baked Goods sorely lacking, but at Freehand New York Zoe Kanan has slowly begun making a name for herself by pulling big flavors without being overly sweet or covered in glitter and sprinkles.

Located at 23 Lexington Avenue in the former George Washington Hotel, a Flatiron space thoroughly renovated and now offering eateries and bars such as Simon & the Whale and Broken Shaker across its public space, guests will find Studio occupying much of floor two and with an open floor plan the choice of where to sit ranges from tables to couches both inside the Restaurant and in a lengthy foyer featuring no lack of interior decorating details.

Open at 8am daily, with Brunch and Lunch beginning at noon or 9am respectively, guests seeking Chef Kanan’s work are encouraged to either take a seat or visit a counter dubbed “Smile to Go,” the former coming with full service and the opportunity to also order items from Gabriel Stulman’s Happy Cooking Hospitality.

No doubt a trendy locale, the servers all thin and aloof in that “I’d rather be on my smartphone” manner Millenials seem to love, it was alongside good Cold Brew that three items were requested, a total of just under $25 including tax and tip clearly not cheap but first bites of a Sticky Bun topped in shaved Halva attesting to next-level thinking as the base ate much like Kouign Amann but not as sweet and with a pleasant linger of Sesame.

Left now to choose between Chocolate Babka and Persian Love Cake, the latter apparently with no Iranian precedent but meant in homage to ingredients once favored by the country’s elite, suffice it to say there is no “wrong” answer, both triangles entirely different with the former both flaky and soft with ribbons of Dark Chocolate while the Love Cake reminisces of Finacier in terms of texture thanks to Almond Flour but doubles down on complexity by way of Cardamom, Rose, Pistachio and seasonal Jam that on December 23rd was Apricot.

Having enjoyed the fried Dough, though less-so service, at Troy Neal and Leslie Polizzotto’s The Doughnut Project in 2017 it was with tempered expectations that a new location at 912 7th Avenue was visited Sunday, the smaller floorplan thankfully doing nothing to diminish selection while staff was efficient and pleasant.

Known to generate lines on Morton Street in the West Village since 2015 Doughnut Project number two continues to focus on producing unique toppings for a collection of leavened Brioche, popular choices like “Everything” and Lemon Love Letter always available while several daily specials are also rotated frequently.

Tightly packed and close to Central Park, arrival at 9:00am finding a small line, it was in four items that $15.50 was invested and taking the box outdoors to indulge it was with fingers quickly sticky that White Chocolate with Pink Peppercorn Glaze came first, the base springy and exceptional while just a touch of heat was detected amidst sweetened Cocoa Butter.

Described as “Mad Scientists,” though the “New Old Fashioned Doughnut” looks and tastes awfully similar to that at Blue Star out West, it was returning to raised rings that Whiskey and Espresso came strong, the bitterness barely kept in check by Sugar while a best-seller called The Bronx comes out of left-field but performs remarkably well by using Olive Oil to form Icing that is then kicked up with Black Pepper.

With locations on both the Upper East and Upper West sides of Manhattan plus Brooklyn it was early Sunday morning that a stop was made at Orwasher’s, their East 78th Street location opening early every day to serve its neighbors many of the same great recipes they’ve proudly been baking since 1916.

Self-proclaimed New York’s “Original Artisan Bakery,” the Hungarian owners’ descendents finally passing the torch to Keith Cohen in 2008, Orwashers now still looks much the same as it always has thanks to accurate restoration, though items have most certainly expanded to include more modern options in addition to Loaves fashioned from ancient Grains and Rye.

Large enough for perhaps fifteen shoppers, though lacking seats and thus exclusively take-out only, it is from racks and shelves behind glass that guests are invited to peruse a variety of choices, regulars making the process seem effortless while first timers will likely take more time for fear of overlooking something delicious.

Not style-specific, Croissants and Scones just a few feet from Cookies and Doughnuts, it was finding the former still oven-warm that tasting commenced, a baked layer of Frangipane thankfully not indicative of insides that are overly sweet but not wet while the $4 Doughnut stuffed with Raspberry Jam was well-raised and yeasty with plenty of housemade filling.

Onward to Rainbow Cookies, presumably the same Jelly here dividing pale Almond Flour layers robed in Chocolate, it was at this point that Orwashers Black & White Cookie was tasked by a reputation of “Best in New York,” the thick Sponge somewhere between Angelfood and Pound Cake while Icing was good, though personal preferences veer towards creamier Frosting.

Wrapping up Chocolate, the Cocoa Old Fashioned not dried out like so many others and even a little tangy on the tongue, it was largely the name which commanded the order of Orwashers’ “Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookie” though it did indeed live up to such as a crisp edge and soft center were each found with more melted morsels than Flour, Sugar, Eggs or Butter.

With a holiday in New York planed almost a year in advance the opening of Benno on November 8th couldn’t have come at a more convenient time, early word of mouth from trusted sources highly praiseful of the Food while environment was described as discreet, comfortable and an ideal place to spend nearly three hours catching up with old friends.

Located inside Evelyn Hotel, the third and final piece of a project also containing Leonelli Taberna plus the Focacceria, it was after seventy minutes relaxing in the foyer that a path was made through double doors to a more secluded space, tablemates already present and conversing with staff that manages to be professional yet pleasant with impressive knowledge of the menu and techniques involved.

Described as “Mediterranean,” and showing hallmarks of Chef Benno’s time at both Per Se and Lincoln Ristorante, it was while settling in that a Beverage list was presented including both Wine and Cocktails, more exclusive bottles via Coravin exciting news for Oenophiles though the Bar is also happy to create non-alcoholic options for those so inclined.

Suggested as a Prix Fixe of three, four, or five courses, no two diners required to order the same number of plates, it was while crunching through fragile Black Pepper Grissini that a Rum Punch titled Occidentale arrived, the pairing of Chai and Orange offering warm notes atop a bold base that is lovely for sipping but not particularly well-suited to mellow cuisine that on this night began with an amuse of raw Scallop slicked in Olive Oil along with segments of Apple and Cucumber.

Well paced and accompanied by light music, a half-full dining room at 7:00pm still quiet when near its 45-seat capacity by nine, it was on Sourdough Baguettes from Lisa Kalemkiarian that Labneh Butter was spread prior to course one, a plate of Risotto and Castelrosso Cheese immediately showing keen attention to detail while house-smoked Trout was elegant and subtle in contrast to Sausage of Pigs Trotter and Garlic served in juxtaposition to softened Beans in smoky broth mellowed by a Quail Egg.

Toqued by Chef de Cuisine Justin Skribner and allowing guests to select “Vegetables & Grains,” “Seafood & Meat” or “Pastas” in any combination before “Mains” and “Dessert,” course two followed some thirty minutes later with two guests opting for Foie Gras while the other selected Lobster, the latter a spicy masterpiece featuring Snail-shaped Pasta that is already being buzzed about while Liver was expectedly decadent whether in Terrine form or as the sautéed filling to textbook Agnolotti further enriched by shaved White Truffles.

Not making choices easy for Entrees, both Skate and Lamb offering temptation, it was instead Duck perfumed by Ras el Hanout alongside a tender Turnip and sweetened Puff Pastry that had guests swooning, the Veal Chop “for two” additionally impressive as it was carved tableside and served atop Spelt with crispy Sweetbreads, Mushrooms and Sauce Béarnaise.

Interestingly offering a Pasta “pre-Dessert,” Chef Benno’s past of French and Italian harmoniously referenced by Pate a Choux beneath airy Zabaglione, it was from here that Pastry Chef Lindsey Bittner took charge, Apple served almost like an Amish Dumpling buttery and bold next to brisk Sorbet while Flan proved a nice choice for those seeking something less sweet, though so too does a Snickers-size Babka served with housemade Halva and boldly fragranced Gelato.

Finishing the evening with Coffee and conversation, though Chocolates and a take-home gift of housemade Caramels should not be overlooked, it seems safe to say that Jonathan Benno is officially “back” after a brief hiatus and it would not be at all surprising to see his eponymous Restaurant awarded one or two stars in the Michelin Guide’s next edition.

Still fondly remembering dinners at Per Se and Lincoln cooked by Jonathan Benno it was with high expectations that Evelyn Hotel was approached on Saturday evening, a 7:00pm reservation at the Chef’s eponymous Restaurant preceded by Coffee and Snacks from Leonelli Focacceria e Pasticceria while relaxing in the boutique hotel’s foyer.

Open for just six months and serving as the Evelyn’s all-day quick-service option, a location just inside doors facing East 27th Street, guests will find the Focacceria brightly lit from 7am until 6pm daily, shelves stacked with everything from Cakes and Cookies to Pizza and Sandwiches made by Benno, Pastry Chef Lindsey Bittner and baker Lisa Kalemkiarian.

Not to be confused with Leonelli Taberna, Benno’s upscale-casual eatery offering lunch and dinner daily, it is after lengthy perusal of items that change throughout the day that most will find something suiting their fancy, each offered as-is or warmed-to-order and first bites of an item simply title “Robiola” nothing short of delicious as mild Cheese squishes between toasty slices of Focaccia with a bit of stretch and good chew.

Serving La Colombe Coffee both hot or Cold Brew, the latter a favorite dating back to its earliest days in Philadelphia, it was with “Pizza” quickly gone that tasting progressed to warm Sfogliatelle, one of Italy’s most labor intensive Pastries here featuring softer Cream and more Citrus that results in an entirely unique experience without losing sight of the classic recipe and its looped, shattering exterior.

Not about to pass on Italian Cookies, a cost of five for $4 no doubt more than the per-pound price of most mom n’ pop shops, suffice it to say that naturally-colored Rainbow Cookies come across far less sweet than most while Pine Nut Pignoli and Italian Wedding Cookies also set a high standard, as too does a $5 Cannoli Cake featuring light Mascarpone Frosting around delicate Sponge perfumed by Rum.

Lions & Tigers & Squares

Detroit Style Pepperoni Pizza

Until fairly recently Detroit Pizza was a style only known to those who’d visited The Motor City and serious Pizza-heads, but the age of social media and culinary-cross-pollination has seen a rise in popularity of the cheesy square with New York’s Lions & Tigers & Squares going all-in and offering nothing else as posters of Barry Sanders and Axel Foley keep watch.

Owned by Francis Garcia of New York’s Artichoke Basille’s, a polarizing Pizzeria that has nonetheless managed to expand outside of Manhattan and even to Florida, Lions & Tigers & Squares opened mid-2018 with the sole intention of perfecting the buttered-pan and at just $5 for four Cheese slices Manhattanites quickly bought in with lines at the Chelsea shop growing each day.

Selling only full-pans, but doing so at a fair price and with unique toppings including Mustard, it was at a cost of $11 that one Pepperoni Pie was loaded into cardboard, visual analysis clearly showing Sauce atop Mozzarella and then rounded Cups with the base quite crispy, though given the shop’s “do one thing” focus more rise would have been nice and likely could be achieved by longer leavening.

Patsy’s Pizzeria (East Harlem,) New York NY

Patsy’s Pizzeria

Original Coal Oven Pizza with Beef Meatball

Penne alla Vodka

Potato Croquettes

Although the debate regarding where to find New York’s best Slice will never end it was a much simpler time when Pasquale Lanceri opened Patsy’s Pizza in East Harlem, the then-Italian neighborhood since labeled “Spanish Harlem” but his iconic Pizzeria still standing and serving what many consider a destination-worthy Pie plus several Red Sauce classics.

Opened 1933 in the coal-oven tradition of Lombardi’s, the Pizzeria where Lanceri is said to have learned his trade, the original Patsy’s is located at 2287 1st Avenue and although current owner Frank Brija has expanded the brand across New York most connoisseurs agree there is no comparison between the others and what an aged oven can produce.

Minimally changed over the course of eighty-five years, a coat of paint plus perhaps some additional photos added over the decades, it is upon entry that guests are greeted by servers sporting accents that almost seem put-on, the cash-only policy prominent on doors and menus though lower-than-average prices can easily see most guests sated for less than $15 including tax and tip.

Divided across two rooms plus the kitchen, each long and narrow but brimming with history, it is from chilled cases that all Beverages save for Water are produced and although table Bread is apparently offered at dinner there was no evidence of such at noon.

Adding a few daily specials to the Italian-American menu, though only one other table had ordered anything but Pizza, it was no more than fifteen minutes after seating that a large Pie arrived with Cheese, Sauce and sliced Meatballs, the ingredient quality certainly not that of newer artisanal joints but char prominent across the bottom and Crust capable of standing up to a fold despite being crisp and cracker thin from edge to center.

Surprised to see a light-eating 11 year old ask for a second Slice, though the novelty of “New York Pizza” in New York certainly factors into the experience, it was with only one wedge remaining that two additional plates arrived, the Potato Croquettes finding favor amongst all whether solo or dipped in Tomato Sauce while Penne alla Vodka was a touch overcooked but otherwise enjoyable and more boozy than many for just $10.95.

Little Pie Company, New York NY

Little Pie Company

Corn Muffin

Apple Coffee Cake

Sour Cream Apple Pie

Quietly occupying a space at 424 West 43rd Street since 1985 it was as part of a three-stop Breakfast that Little Pie Company was visited, former-actor Arnold Wilkerson’s bakeshop still doing good business in its third decade even though competition has grown tremendously across the five boroughs including the likes of Pies ‘n’ Thighs, Petee’s, Four & Twenty Blackbirds and Milk Bar.

In many ways a passion-project for the self-taught baker, years spent at his Grandmother’s elbow fondly remembered as the impetus for this second career, it is through a large window that passers-by are invited into a kitchen where locally sourced ingredients are transformed into rustic Desserts focused on technique and flavor rather than the most recent Instagram fad.

Appropriately located near the Theater District and open until 8pm daily, though guests seeking the largest selection are advised to arrive early, it is by several sizes and styles of Baked Goods that temptation is offered, a Corn Muffin to begin crumbly but not dry and sweetened only a bit by Honey.

Not making any Carrot Cake Cupcakes on this particular morning, Christmas in just three days creating a log-jam of pre-orders, it was instead Coffee Cake with a layer of Apples that was tasted next, the top unfortunately a little over-baked and thus yielding a bitter aftertaste while Little Pie Company’s signature Sour Cream Apple Pie thankfully lived up to its accolades by offering thinly sliced Fruit afloat in semi-savory Custard beneath thick Cinnamon-Sugar Streusel.
