Opened in 2002, the son of a Fruit and Vegetable salesman turning childhood interests into an obsession with quality as well as sustainability, L’Enclume resides in the quiet town of Cartmel where its white stone building has stood since around 1243.
A smithy until the 1950s, the anvil still present in more than one way, it is now inside airy and minimally adorned rooms that guests are invited to enjoy fifteen seasonal courses featuring Produce almost entirely grown on a 12 acre organic piece of land designed by the Chef exclusively for his Restaurant.
The singular vision of Simon Rogan, he and his team celebrating Cumbria from “Our Farm” through relationships with local farmers and fishermen, it is almost immediately upon seating that staff’s enthusiasm bubbles over to create an atmosphere far less stuffy than one typically associates with Michelin 3* accolades.
Nearly zero-waste in 2026, a shorter lunch menu and the longer “experience” each beginning with small bites, bitter Beets and Salted Mackerel awaken the palate alongside fragrant Juice prior to two bites of fried Pork and an elegant piece of crispy Sheep’s Cheese Pudding sweetened by Tree Sap.
High on technique as well as presentation, razor-thin Radishes concealing an Oyster amidst Roses and Horseradish, grilled Lettuce on a cloud with Sweetbreads below is earthy and impactful before delicate raw Scallops sliced beneath roots and tinged by Mint.
Occasionally sweeter than many “Farm-to-Table” concepts, Onions and Truffles one example followed by Bread, Rogan’s Seaweed Custard with Langoustine is a highlight thanks to the unique interplay of Beans and Crustacean while gently cooked Turnips and Cuttlefish stand up nicely to Anise Hyssop floating on Pork Fat.
Pairing sweet with savory across the three courses preceding Dessert, the glazed and Grilled Pork with an accompanying Crumpet more memorable than slightly overcooked Monkfish or L’Enclume’s take on Dippin’ Dots, the Anvil reappears as a sort of Caramel Apple before finishing with four Mignardises and a plant to take home.
