Opened in early 2018, and recently completing the wholesale renovation from B&B Burgers & Beer with a decorative outdoor patio, it was on Veterans Day that two guests sat down at Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer inside The Venetian, the holiday’s special Shake sold-out several hours prior but several new menu items poised to expand the concept.

Born in Manhattan, previously Michelin-starred Chef Joe Isidori having departed the world of hotels and fine dining to focus on a casual concept close to his heart, it is immediately on approach of the Las Vegas location that guests are greeted, the sights and sounds emanating from inside a combination of sports television, neon and tunes from the ‘80s and ‘90s.

Featuring bars, booths and tables, alcoves carved out next to the Shake station coveted for their comfort and privacy, it is upon seating that diners are presented with a two-side laminate, the first entailing Salads, Snacks, and Sandwiches while Shakes, Beer and Booze dominate the backside.

Upscale-urban in atmosphere, but service-oriented such that diners are never for want even with the Restaurant near-capacity, it was after several minutes perusal that focus fell on previously un-tasted items, dark-brewed Ice Tea proving better than most with bitterness that helped refresh the palate between bites.

Sourcing Beef from the legendary Pat Lafrieda, and enjoyable-to-excellent across several Burgers in the past, it was with “Fried Mozz” that dinner got started, the Chipotle Tomato Sauce mostly like creamy Tomato Soup with a bit of smoke while Chicken Strips veered southern thanks to Black Pepper in the Batter behind a trio of Housemade Sauces.

Already a successful brand from New York to Downtown Disney, Black Tap Las Vegas no exception, it is apparently in hopes of attracting additional clientele that two new Vegan options have been added, “The Impossible All American” taking America’s newest fad and offering it with Big Mac-style accoutrements while “The Vegan Nashville Hot” spins an idea that is both literally and figuratively scorching in a new direction with fried Mushrooms and Slaw.

Revisiting Black Tap’s Buttermilk-Dill as Dip for crispy French Fries, and again as Dressing for the “Wagyu Wedge” which recreates Chef Isidori’s famous Greg Noman Burger as a Salad, those in-search of more Beef-free options will find them in the form of Miso-glazed Salmon atop a sweet and savory mix or the exquisite “Beer Hall Chicken Sandwich” that first coats a generous Breast in crumbled Pretzels before frying it and adding Bacon, Jalapenos and Beer Cheese.

Not about to depart without Dessert, and again seeking novelty over past favorites, it was after a lengthy delay during which no less than nine Cake Shakes were constructed that two audacious options were offered, The Cookie Shake augmenting a creamy Vanilla base with Chocolate Chips, Syrup and Crumbles while “Want The World” places a two-tiered Red Velvet Cake atop the creamy Pink concoction for $35.00…or $20,000.00 for those who take the name seriously and add a diamond bracelet.

FOUR STARS: While many will argue that there is nothing quite like a classic Burger it would be hard to claim Black Tap is not dedicated to their craft, and although their Patty of Prime Beef from Pat LaFrieda is great a new collection of items looks to target consumers seeking alternatives. From a damn fine Fried Portabello to the Pretzel Crusted Chicken this is “have it your way” as it should be.

RECOMMENDED: Iced Tea, The Vegan Nashville Hot, Beer Hall Chicken Sandwich, Wagyu Wedge Salad, French Fries, Want The World Shake.

AVOID: The Impossible Burger contains roughly 21-Ingredients not accounting for “Natural Flavors,” and for anyone but ardent Vegans the $19 tab seems wasteful when LaFrieda’s single-ingredient Prime Beef is only $17 in its simplest form on the menu.

TIP: Open 11am until midnight Sunday through Thursday, and until 2am on Friday as well as Saturday.

Opened with the Bellagio as Aqua, but since reborn twice as MICHAEL MINA Restaurant, it was behind the recently updated Conservatory & Botanical Gardens that eight guests sat down for Dinner on Saturday, service overseen by Jorge Pagani once again faultless as the kitchen led by Chef Dugan showed off its newest seasonal creations.

Always a special place, and on this particular evening booked to capacity during one of The Strip’s busiest weekends, it was at the dining room’s center that friends new and old were situated just prior to 6:30pm, Carte Blanche once again deferred to the kitchen with one diner fluidly accommodated for religious dietary restrictions.

Requesting no Michael Mina classics on this particular evening, and thus started off with a Falafel Canape brightened by Za’atar, it was after explanation of the night’s first Wine Pairing that house Laffa Bread was offered alongside three Crudo, the Japanese Uni brilliantly balancing Salt and Citrus with light florals while tangy Sumac acted as a foil to Red Onion served atop line-caught Trout.

Texturing the Urchin with Breadcrumbs and Fish with Phyllo, while allowing tender Scallops to stand on their own against Orange segments plus Buttermilk, course two attested to the global influences that have emerged ever since Chef Dugan took over, a traditional Duck Liver Torchon perfectly smooth at the center of Grains and Seeds with Coffee dust and spicy Mole playing remarkably well off one another.

Cleverly using Pastry Chef Chang’s Concha as Bread service for the Foie, a coat of crackling Sugar refreshing the palate between bites, it was by way of Maple Syrup that the kitchen brightened Pastry filled and surrounded by roasted Squash, a dollop of Mascarpone smoothing things out and crumbled Bacon easily left off for those dining with restrictions.

Frequently offering a Pasta course, Autumn replacing Gnudi with hand-cut Spaghetti swimming in Ocean-kissed Butter beneath tongues of Uni, it was as guests swooned that Nick raised the bar further with a generous plate of Rice liberally topped with shaved White Truffles from Alba.

A former Michelin star recipient in the red book’s Las Vegas days, accolades that would have assuredly continued or received an upgrade if the guide had stuck around, the penultimate savory consisted of individually portioned Turbot with Huckleberries and Fish Roe, yet good as it was the flavors were merely a fleeting memory once seared Liver and Scallops arrived on the same plate, deftly tied together by earthy Mushrooms, Turnips and Salsify.

Lighter than recent meals at MICHAEL MINA Restaurant, a blessing for those who’ve previously waived the white flag prior to Dessert, it was beginning with individual Panna Cotta that Pastry Chef Vivian Chang’s talents took center stage, her Valrhona Chocolate Cake next riffing Red Velvet by separating Chocolate and Beets without a lot of Sugar while the reinvention of Chef Mina’s Root Beer Float is as delightful to eat as it is to look at, though for an eight-top one Cookie was certainly not enough.

FIVE STARS: Following its 2018 reinvention MICHAEL MINA Restaurant took a big step forward, and with Chefs Nick Dugan and Vivian Chang now overseeing the Kitchen and Pastry program, respectively, the Restaurant continues to get better and better with each seasonal update.

RECOMMENDED: Marinated Bay Scallops, Chilled Foie Gras, Heirloom Squash ‘Pop-Tart’, Hand-Cut Tajarin, Roasted Diver Scallops & Foie Gras, Root Beer Float.

AVOID: N/A.

TIP: The Market List Menu is prone to daily change, and for those on a budget (or tight schedule) the recently-added lounge menu looks to offer guests a more casual way to experience some of Chef Dugan’s Food.

“Hidden in plain sight” at Four Seasons Hotel, Veranda has long been recognized as one of Sin City’s best Brunches, and on Saturday morning as a party of three the ground-floor Restaurant located on Las Vegas Boulevard’s south end was found busy as ever, though not all was so great as memory serves.

Now twenty years old, and to this day a far more reserved environment than the sprawling Buffets of Casinos inhabited by “Vegas Baby!” bachelorettes chugging Mimosas, it was after ten minutes at the hostess’ stand that patio seating was procured, a crowd of ‘Boomers predictably present alongside Europeans with many lingering over Coffee and conversation for hours.

Accessed this time from Four Seasons’ Valet, the $22 charge validated by Veranda saving a lengthy walk from Mandalay Bay self-parking, it was once seated that a pleasant waiter approached offering Drinks, Coffee and Juice complimentary with the $42 Buffet or at-cost with a substantially truncated list of a la carte options.

Recently doing away with dinner service and Chef Joel Ott, the focus now Breakfast and Lunch plus weekend Brunch, it was after a sip of Orange Juice deemed ‘very acidic’ by those drinking that a first look was taken at Veranda’s spread, several familiar items quickly noted though the highly recommended Nutella Croissants from February have been replaced by Spanish Tortilla with Pork.

Losing the “Italian” theme across all but a few Pizzas and Pastas on the Lunch menu, and apparently content to keep a low profile inside the gaming-free luxury resort, plate one consisted of starters including two types of Muffins plus chilled fruit, the former highlighted by fluffy Pumpkin topped with Pepitas while the latter used a similar blend of spices to accent Museli and Poached Pears topped with Nuts plus Mascarpone.

Getting to freshly fried Doughnuts quickly this time, first with Sprinkles and later rolled through Cinnamon-Sugar, it was from the a la carte menu that Bananas Foster French Toast was added, the $22 tag undeniably a bit steep though otherwise it would be difficult to find any fault in crustless Brioche with locally-made Banana Whiskey Syrup and Fruit.

Surprised to see Mango Pancakes, though the Fruit flavor was subtle and better enjoyed with Apple Glaze intended for Blintzes that were under-filled in comparison to past visits, there also seems to have been a change in the Waffles served as a base for Sage-fried Chicken, the Bird still delicious with or without Syrup while the Waffles themselves were dry even after being replaced by a fresh batch.

Impressed again by bite-size Sticky Buns, and also by buttery Scones intended to be eaten with tangy Lemon Curd, it is unfortunate that Sea Salt Brioche also memorable from February was remarkably dry, though the Lemon Quickbread with Icing offered a tremendous upgrade on Veranda’s prior Lemon-Poppyseed Loaf.

Finding both styles of Sausage enjoyable, as too were Chilaquiles, those seeking lighter options will likely be impressed by Egg White Frittatas with Tomatoes and Mozzarella while the Farro with Roasted Vegetables tastes like a Thanksgiving side-dish with sweetness added by Raisins and Apricots.

Smartly taking one last look at the Pastry cart, several styles of Viennoiserie performing well with the Pain au Chocolate standing out, it was after a wedge of Blueberry Coffee Cake that Bread Pudding was liberally topped with Anglaise, the top layers still some of Vegas’ best while the Chocolate-lined bottom was unfortunately soggy to the point that it could have been consumed through a straw.

THREE STARS: Up from $39 to $42 per guest over the past nine-months, Veranda has additionally done away with Dinner to focus on Brunch and Lunch, though offerings have been truncated with few noteworthy improvements, several unlabeled items and a few disappointments in comparison to past visits.

RECOMMENDED: Sage Fried Chicken, Chicken and Apple Sausage, Chilaquiles, Spiced Pear with Mascarpone and Nuts, Butter Scones, Lemon Curd, Sticky Bun, Pain au Chocolat, Pumpkin Muffin, Iced Lemon Loaf, Bananas Foster French Toast.

AVOID: Bacon Waffles, Sea Salt Brioche Muffin, Mango Pancakes, Orange Juice.

TIP: Breakfast is offered 6:30am until 11:00am from Monday through Friday and beginning at 7:00am on Weekends while the Brunch Buffet runs 8:00am until 1:00pm on Saturdays and Sundays only. Please note that the French Toast is not included on the Buffet and costs $22.

When it was announced that Dan Krohmer would open dueling Japanese and Mexican Restaurants inside long-defunct Fergusons Motel there was certainly skepticism, but billed as an ode to Japanese omotenashi Hatsumi not only offers something unique for downtown denizens but gives locals as well as tourists another reason to visit Fremont East.

Built with Downtown Project involvement, the question of “what’s going on behind the twisted big rig?” finally answered in May, it is once past a guarded front gate that guests find themselves in the middle of Fergusons well-kept courtyard, a Coffee Shop to the rear and La Monja right with Hatsumi left inside the former motel’s lobby.

Concepted as an Izakaya specializing in Robatayaki, the smell of charcoal greeting nostrils even before opening Hatsumi’s front door, it is once inside that the space unfolds narrow and comfortable, a good deal of Alcohol lining shelves along one end while the kitchen, grill and walk-in occupy the other half.

Fulfilling its intent to look like a “1980’s hotel lobby bar,” with paintings of a furry horned creature eating Robata-style Skewers on both sides, it was after obtaining a drink at the bar that seating was offered, seven diners placed immediately adjacent the kitchen where, after an initial delay, service quickly improved with proficient pacing to follow.

Apt for comparisons to Abriya Raku in Chinatown, a longtime Vegas stalwart that remains busy to this day, it is important to first note that Hatsumi’s intention has never been “authenticity” but rather good Food and “subliminal happiness,” the latter fortified by clever Cocktails including several based on Whiskey or Sake along with inspired mixes like the Chill Pill that takes Piña Coladas in a new direction by reining-in sweetness with Matcha.

Similarly priced to Raku, and more affordable than other dtlv hotspots in terms of Food and Beverage, it was after some suggestions that omakase was then deferred to Chef de Cuisine Bobby Silva, a total of thirty items beginning with sharable sides including Potato Salad, spicy Cauliflower and Turnip Kimchi followed by round-after-round over the next two hours.

Continuing with handmade Gyoza, Pork selected over Vegetarian filling and five per order, it was after breaking the crispy lattice that Dumpling proved fat and juicy, additional sides such as marinated Cucumbers and salted Edamame simple but enjoyable while Chef Krohmer’s Gomae uses Sesame and thick Miso to compliment softened Spinach.

More complex with Beef Tataki, thinly sliced Muscle given textural complexity and a bit of spice by its toppings, those who know Dan’s work from Other Mama will not want to pass on Lomi Lomi that on this night consisted of Ocean Trout with Onions, Tomatoes and vibrant Ponzu.

Turning now to Skewers, all served in generous portions and most aggressively seasoned, it was first a duo of Chicken Thigh and Breast that tempted diners, the latter’s leanness in no way leaving Flesh dry while the Dark Meat sported charred edges and rendered Fat that played well off blackened Green Onions.

Not afraid to challenge more timid eaters with Offal, ribbons of Wagyu sandwiched between Tongue, Thymus, Skin and Heart, it was to everyone’s surprise that both Chicken bits were big hits while others received less effusive praise, though they too were cooked appropriately and in no way robbed of their natural flavors or textures.

Keeping it simple with Shrimp, a good snap yielding sweet Flesh with a hint of smoke, medium-rare Lamb arrived appropriately fatty but a bit too salty while Tsukune with dipping Sauce and briskly grilled Quail each received raves, as did the Tomatoes wrapped in Bacon.

In no way shielding diners from the minerality of Chicken Liver, this and blistered Shishitos the only items with any left at meal’s end, it was after bundles of Asparagus bound by Bacon that skewers concluded with Chicken Wings, Meat liberated by the slightest pull and providing a nice transition to Fried Quail with Bones mostly removed and ground Pork in their place.

More than a little impressed by Slaw served alongside the Bird, its bitterness refreshing the palate between bites, it was prior to three flavors of housemade Mochi that Okonomiyaki arrived, and although perhaps “cheating” somewhat by adding Bacon a dish translated “Grill As You Like” seems perfectly suited to interpretation that in this case sees it light, virtually oilless and chock-a-block full of umami.

FOUR AND A HALF STARS: Still finding its audience, though fairly busy by 7:30pm on a weekday, it looks as though the Chef that made Other Mama a hit-hidden-in-a-strip-mall has once again showed an impressive ability to turn something traditional into an inauthentically delicious destination.

RECOMMENDED: Chill Pill, Pork Gyoza, Gomae, Lomi Lomi, Beef Tataki, Veal Sweetbreads Skewer, Wagyu Beef Filet Skewer, Chicken Skin Skewer, Chicken Heart Skewer, Chicken Meatball Skewer, Crispy Quail, Shrimp and Bacon Okonomiyaki.

AVOID: Mocchi is fairly basic and $3 a piece seems pricey, otherwise only the over-salted Lamb was a miss save for personal preferences.

TIP: Located at 1028 Fremont St Suite #100. Open 5:00pm to 10:00pm daily with free street parking nearby.

Having enjoyed David Mozes’ and Chef Peter Bastien’s Bronze Café at The Center, The Market and Juice Stars, it was to #supportlocal that lunch was catered from their North Buffalo location on Wednesday, a request for something new unfortunately arriving a bit late but with plenty of plates and utensils so that things were ready to go immediately.

Located near Desert Shores in Summerlin, the former home of Beau Monde Bakery providing turnkey access for a Restaurant eventually intended to offer Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, it is focused on health-conscious and diet-friendly fare that many guests began with Salad, “David’s Special” potentially the only healthy thing in town that staff requests by name thanks to Quinoa, Chickpeas, Hemp and Avocado that compliment thinly sliced Kale.

Setting aside Sandwiches for this visit, those in need of Bread still able to find it as toasty strips amidst sautéed Asparagus and Peppers with lots of Garlic, it was alongside scoops of roasted Red Potatoes that Chicken Breast showed well, individually sliced breasts tender and juicy with added flavor from vibrant, housemade Pesto.

Not about to miss Bronze Café’s vegan Desserts, The Peanut Butter Snickerdoodle still Las Vegas’ best Cookie despite mounting competition, those missing Beau Monde’s gluten-free offerings will be happy to know Chef Bastien’s Carrot Cake is made without any Wheat protein, and even those without allergy or intolerance are bound to be impressed by how the eponymous Vegetable is complimented by Pineapple and plenty of Baking Spices beneath slick Icing and toasted Coconut.

Continuing with a Chocolate Chip round, simple but satisfying and gone quickly, it was a bit longer that Pumpkin Spice and Strawberry lasted, though by the time late-arrivers finally made their way to lunch all that was left were a few Cake-like crumbs.

N/A: Making it blog policy to not ‘rate’ places based on catering alone, no matter where Chef Peter and David are set-up the quality has never declined, lunch on Wednesday continuing to show quality and creativity bound to please those with and without dietary restrictions, whether they want to be gluttonous or eat light.

A reinvention of the former DW Bistro and Andres’, Big B’s Texas BBQ opened its second location just prior to Halloween, and although paint has hardly dried with Grand Opening yet to occur the space at 6115 South Fort Apache Road is already showing every sign that it will be just as ground-breaking to the west side as the original was and continues to be in Henderson.

Named after its Pit Master, and changing the long-held belief that Las Vegas is not a Barbeque town ever since 2016, Big B’s Texas BBQ features the work of Brian Buechner and Natalia Badzjo, the husband and wife team taking a hands-on approach to every aspect of the operation from build-out to driving in fresh piles of wood as needed from the Lone Star State.

Joined recently by former Marché Bacchus Chef Amanda Hamilton, the opportunity to bring Sin City’s best smoked Meat across town not left to chance by a team who has always adhered to high standards, guests entering location number two will immediately notice Brian’s handy work in wood tables and chairs flanking a full bar, the relic of Andres’ benefitted by a liquor license in addition to Beer, Soft Drinks and freshly brewed Tea.

Texas through-and-through in terms of décor, the bustling main room offering a full view of the kitchen while Brian and Natalia have opened up the Restaurant’s right half with big screen televisions in each corner, it was in a secluded nook painted orange and white that ten diners were seated, a total of four different college football games on display while country tunes played overhead.

Ready to make new fans, and surprisingly busy considering “soft opening” status at 6:30pm, it was on individual trays that Meats, Breads and Sides arrived quickly, the housemade Cornbread particularly soft when warm and delicious whether plain or slathered with Butter, but best when eaten bite for bite with Beans cooked low and slow in Sauce imbued with Brisket.

Evidencing Ms. Badzjo’s work in the hospitality industry with staff that is already cordial and well-trained, a cashier using limited down-time to help bus tables but one example, it was while conversing that diners continued with hand-cut Fries and crisp Okra, another “green” item recently added in the form of snappy Green Beans gently salted and slick with Butter.

Not sleeping on Slaw or Potato Salad, both finding their audience while Mac & Cheese fresh from the oven was a hit with everyone from the seven year old to a septuagenarian, it was from here that Meat took center stage, Big B’s Brisket following Texas protocol with little more than smoke and a bit of seasoning while Pork Ribs also went quickly with a slight pull of the teeth easily liberating supple Muscle from Bone.

Not a night for calorie counting, though lean yet moist Tri-Tip and Turkey make that option available without feeling cheated, it was after a generous portion of Pulled Pork that Dessert arrived, Chef Hamilton’s new Chocolate Cake an upgrade on what was already quite good while outsourced Pies including Apple and Pecan are also available with additional housemade options reportedly soon to come.

FIVE STARS: A fan of Big B’s Texas BBQ ever since Brian and Natalia opened the doors in early 2016, it is an absolute thrill to have Las Vegas’ best BBQ merely 10-minutes from home and three miles from the office. Occupying the old DW Bistro and short-lived Andres’ it is no surprise the entirely rethought interior is virtually unrecognizable, while the flavors brought from Texas to Vegas by way of Henderson are everything fans have come to expect and love.

RECOMMENDED: Fatty Brisket, Smoked Turkey, Beef Hot Links, Tri-Tip, BBQ Beans, French Fries, Corn Bread, Chocolate Cake.

From the day CRAFTkitchen opened it raised the bar for breakfast Valley-wide, and on Saturday for the 200th edition of #everchangingbrunch Jaret and Tami’s little place in Henderson again dazzled with quality and creativity plus service that attests to well-trained employees working with a sense of pride.

Four years old just prior to Halloween, the Blinn’s investment of money, time and talent paying off thanks to their commitment to quality and community, it was arriving before the 11:00am rush that three guests were seated on the Restaurant’s left half, several familiar servers and a new General Manager all moving quickly but purposefully with smiles on their faces.

Still as bright and tidy as day one, living walls and art from the Blinn’s daughter flanking the Coffee Bar and Pastry cases full of delights, it was shortly after seating that beverages were served, brewed to order Coffee bold and balanced while Hot Chocolate found added depth in Milk with a tiny Biscotti at its side.

Surrounded by folks of all ages, a “35-40 minute wait” avoided by calling ahead, it was with five of the aforementioned Baked Goods that dining got started, the Chocolate Cherry Scone crumbly but moist with Black Forest inklings while Jaret’s seasonal Poptart packed with seasonal Pumpkin Cream Cheese remains reference-standard for how to take a commercially available icon and make it better in every way.

Continuing with Kouign Amann, pockets of melted Butter visible amidst flaky layers, one would be hard-pressed to decide which was tops among Ham and Cheese, Ube Coconut or Pumpkin Cheesecake, the best bet a side-by-side tasting, but only if that still allows enough stomach space for Sin City’s best Monkey Bread.

Equally indecisive with regard to Pancakes, both Buttermilk and Birthday eventually missing the cut in favor of two weekly specials, fans of CRAFTkitchen’s Carrot Cake will be delighted to find all the same spices in a short stack topped by Cream Cheese, Sultanas and Nuts while Autumn is also highlighted by the flavors of a Caramel Apple combined with Cinnamon Streusel that eats much lighter than it looks.

Next veering savory, the #everchangingbrunch this week featuring two new choices, Gluten-free diners would be smart to check out Blinn’s Benny featuring Spinach, Mushrooms and Tomatoes over seared Cornmeal while others ignore any such allergy (or calories) to indulge in *The* Monte Cristo done as the original recipe suggests by way of Turkey, Ham and Swiss fried and ready to be dipped in housemade Jam.

Adding one item from the “regular” menu, though calling CRAFTkitchen’s “K.F.C.” anything but exceptional undermines everything from the housemade Purple Potato Roll to a sticky Organic Chicken Breast and spicy Slaw, it was after devouring every messy bite that Dessert arrived, another debate ensuing as to whether piping hot Pumpkin Bread or Ube with lightly sweetened Coconut Sauce was the better place to invest limited remaining appetite.

FIVE STARS: Undeniably a fan, the entire Valley remains fortunate to have CRAFTkitchen where Tami, Jaret and their staff continue to deliver on a motto of “Food with personality delivered by people with passion” each and every day, but even better with the #everchangingbrunch on weekends.

RECOMMENDED: CK Monkey Bread, Ube Kouign Amann, Ham & Cheddar Kouign Amann, Pumpkin Cream Cheese Poptart, Apple Pie Pancakes, The Monte Cristo, “K.F.C.” Korean Fried Chicken, Ube Bread Pudding.

AVOID: …the line at Popeyes and go check out the K.F.C. instead. You’re welcome.

TIP: With the Holidays coming up consider CRAFTkitchen for both off-site catering and buyouts. Give them a call daily until 3pm at (702) 728-5828 to place orders or inquire, and see the Thanksgiving to-go menu above.

Only familiar with Chef Samuel DeMarco’s cuisine from a 2012 visit to First Food & Bar it was a big surprise when 7th & Carson announced DeMarco’s semi-permanent pop-up, and on Friday night an all new menu showed signs of good thing happening with more on the way per owner Liam Dwyer.

Known as Sammy D to fans and friends, the former Chef behind Strip-favorites since 1998 officially returning to the local culinary scene after several years overseas on September 15th, it is inside the two-year-old Restaurant described as “a nice little drinking spot with really great Food” that guests will find items built to please along with service that is exceptional from entry to exit.

Centered around a large wood-burning oven, plus patterned tables telling a story of Mr. Dwyer’s Irish upbringing, it is with full view of both kitchen and bar that diners are enticed by sections titled “Get It Started,” “Bigger Plates,” “F.T.T.” and “Sam-wiches,” each with items well-suited to Omnivores as well as Vegetarians.

Said by Liam to be a Chef with the “unique ability to turn any Ingredients into something special,” it was after perusal of several options that the decision was made to dine in three courses, 7th & Carson’s riff on a Bee’s Knees a remnant of the past that pairs well with both Sammy’s grilled Cauliflower brightened by Citrus as well as juicy Turkey Meatballs that taste like Thanksgiving has arrived early in dtlv.

Rethinking Chef Gregg’s Oxtail Toast as Poutine, hand-cut Fries holding up well to squeaky Curds and rich Gravy even after adding a runny Egg, course two consisted of two Sam-wiches and two sides, the latter basic but enjoyable while both “Big Dipper” and DeMarco’s “BLTA XXL” come in sharable size with good Ingredients and big flavors.

Quiet early but busy by 7:00pm, almost every table graced by “Puff Daddy” Bread that has been a 7th & Carson signature since day one, it was sated but not stuffed that all three Desserts were requested, Panna Cotta shots smooth and creamy but not in the same league as Momo’s Warm Chocolate Brownie with intense Coffee Ice Cream or Brioche Bread Pudding studded with White Chocolate and Hazelnuts beneath pure Maple Syrup and a melting scoop of Vanilla.

FOUR STARS: Just as Fremont East has been in an ongoing transition to become the hub of downtown Las Vegas, 7th & Carson is currently best witnessed as an evolution from one Chef to the next while both setting and service remain amongst the best Off-strip.

RECOMMENDED: “Stove Top” Turkey Meatballs, Oxtail Poutine, BLTA XXL, Momo’s Warm Chocolate Brownie, White Chocolate French Toast.

AVOID: Carrots are not on par with Chef Fortunato’s version and Panna Cotta is fine but forgettable.

When first writing about Harvest by Roy Ellamar, the Restaurant then only two weeks old, it was suggested that the concept showed “signs of an awakening amongst casino executives,” and although that prediction was quickly disproved by dozens of half-brained imports the good news is that Harvest remains stunning thanks to Chef Ellamar and his ability to coax maximum flavor from impeccable Ingredients.

Soon celebrating anniversary number four, and still one of Las Vegas Boulevard’s rare “hidden gems” thanks to a location between Bellagio’s ballrooms and the Conservatory, it was after greetings from Roy and General Manager Hunter Welch that three guests were offered lounge-seats, this particular evening not only celebrating a personal milestone but witnessing Chef Ellamar’s Snack Wagon in conjunction with a Chef from South Korea.

Described as an “homage to the origin of Food,” the affectation of this accurate but in no way a reflection of the humble Chef who turns spotlights away from himself and onto farmers and fishmongers, it was shortly after getting comfortable that staff arrived with menus and beverages, the latter via cart driven by Mr. Welch and featuring several Soju Cocktails from the visiting Chef’s Restaurant Bicena.

Dining in front of Harvest’s jewel box kitchen, all while Game 7 of the World Series was unfolding on televisions at the Bar, it was while music played overheard that Naan from the Tadoori Oven was delivered fluffy as ever, a live-cooking demo soon to follow as Royden and another man prepared smoky Beef Buns and beautifully seared Scallops atop Squash from Dan Barber at Blue Hill.

Off to a good start, the Vegan and Gluten-Free Congee from Roy’s Wagon achieving an unanticipated level of creaminess amidst earthy flavors that found balance in Soy plus Ginger, it was with three Salads that dinner continued, Tuna Poke brightened by the careful use of Wasabi while Beets with Feta and Radicchio with Ricotta each attested to top-quality Ingredients paired in ways that allow them to shine.

Continuing with Soup, a Vegan Potage in which Chef Ellamar resists the urge of many Chefs to make Pumpkin sweet, it was after finishing an accompanying Macaron that attention turned to Fish, in this case Striped Bass from Baja presented something like Acqua Pazza with delicate Flesh and charred, crackling Skin.

Going a little “off menu” with Entrees, specifically by offering Belly from Pachamama Farm and Chops from Tails & Trotters on one plate, there is arguably no better Pork in Las Vegas than what Harvest is offering, and the Lamb Shank cooked Fork-tender atop Polenta with vibrant Gremolata is also a carnivore’s delight.

Not forgetting Sides, the stick-a-spoon-up-straight Risotto only slightly less remarkable than Congee from earlier, those in love with Brussels Sprouts should not skip Chef Ellamar’s sweet and savory version that eschews Bacon in favor Chiles and Mustard Seed, the Pork instead set aside for Sticky Toffee Pudding that outduels any in town for texture with or without creamy Vanilla Ice Cream.

Unchanged in terms of Dessert, and too full for all six, it was instead picking and choosing that three more plates were requested, the Chocolate & Lemon Mousse Cake better than remembered while Pudding-like Panna Cotta and a rustic Apple Pie were each befitting the Ingredient-driven menu, sharable and delicious.

FIVE STARS: In a city where Ingredient sourcing often takes a backseat to Restaurant design, ambiance or the whims of upper management Harvest by Roy Ellamar remains a beacon of quality and sustainability. Vegetable-centric often Vegan, this is intelligent cuisine in a city where Chefs are being told to make things more #instagramfriendly and Roy deserves tremendous credit for what he has created.

RECOMMENDED: Mushroom Congee, Radicchio Endive Salad, Spiced Pumpkin Coconut Soup, Lechon, Lamb Osso Buco, Crispy Brussels Sprouts, Toffee & Bacon Pudding, Raspberry Panna Cotta.

AVOID: N/A.

Found at the east end of The Center at Spring Mountain, inside the former confines of Chada Street, Partage is the second Restaurant from partners Yuri Szarzewski, Vincent Pellerin and Nicolas Kalpokdjian, the trio behind Eatt Gourmet Bistro describing their upscale concept as “the American dream of award winning French Chefs.”

Translated as “sharing,” appropriate in two ways as the team seeks to share their passion with patrons by way of what one server called “French Tapas,” it was immediately upon entering strip-mall doors that guests were greeted professionally, the young hostess first confirming reservations and then leading diners to a booth at room’s center before offering to snap a group photo.

Chic but not stuffy, a conversion from Thai Bistro to Modern French décor accomplished by clean lines and polished surfaces, it is from foyer to Chef’s Table and Wine Bar that the room flows nicely, Partage’s Private Dining Room even offering a projector-augmented experience complete with guest names and company logos, or varying animations for each plate.

Highly customizable, with 5, 7, and 9-course Tasting Menus offered in addition to a la carte items large or small, it was without delay that the decision was made to self-select the evening’s course, a total of thirteen plates covering roughly half of the Chefs’ current offerings and served alongside Cocktails plus Wine.

Allowing the kitchen and Mr. Kalpokdjian to determine the order of plates, a decision presumably dictated by two guest’s decision to opt for Wine Pairings, it was alongside a crisp White that King Crab got things started, an overzealous middle-age server pointing out every.single.element. of the dish with fingers nearly grazing Ingredients and the flavor largely delicious, though both a miniscule dollop of Caviar and Gold Leaf could have been left off without anyone noticing.

Continuing the laborious presentation with Goat Cheese and Chicken, the latter unexpected but delightfully rustic with exquisite Pastry-work, it was after consuming every shard of Meringue, Popcorn and Chevre balanced by sweetness that share-plates were reset, a younger server thankfully taking over from here and delivering a housemade Baguette with salted French Butter on request.

Next offering two items each from “Seafood” and “Vegetarian & Vegan” sections, the Truffle Oil added to a stuffed Artichoke Heart contributing nothing a bit of hard Cheese could not have, Chef Szarzewski’s Ratatouille-inspired “Tian de Legumes” is a tremendous dish both visually and in terms of taste while his Scallop bathed in Mushroom Broth with late-summer Vegetables reminisces of L’Atelier De Joel Robuchon at 1/3 the price.

Still working on Octopus when two more plates arrived, splatters of creamy Fennel a questionable visual despite functioning well as Dip for Potatoes and Tentacles intended to be eaten as “Tacos,” it was again Truffle Oil that hindered rather than helped braised Oxtail layered between Toast, its richness already amplified by Bone Marrow and thus in need of little else while Foie Gras Crème Brulee in the spirit of Sage was nearly perfect, save for the server’s recommendation to spread it on Gingerbread that was only large enough for perhaps a quarter of the Custard.

Told by trustworthy palates that Partage’s “Large Plates to Share” feature Yuri’s best work it was unwilling to forego either Pork or Rib Eye that both were ordered, $70 a fair price for one juicy pound of Kurobuta Frenched Chop unfortunately compromised by Celery Root instead of menu-listed accoutrements, while eighteen ounces of Grass Fed Beef smoked with Applewood was enjoyable but a bit steep in comparison to Steaks served off-Strip at Locale Italian, Sparrow + Wolf or b.B.d.’s.

Happy to see an actual Espresso machine on Spring Mountain Road, the Beans medium roasted and offered in a variety of styles, it was here that Pastry Chef Vincent Pellerin took over, the Tarte Tatin harkening “La Pomme” visually stunning and not too sweet while a daily inspiration again attested to Joel Robuchon’s enduring influence by amplifying Chocolate and Bananas with Asian Citrus.

FOUR STARS: Relieved from the self-imposed constraints of “health Food” at Eatt, Chefs Szarzewski and Pellerin are preparing some outstanding plates at Partage, though the over-exuberance of youth does occasionally show in dishes that would benefit from a “less is more approach.” Already stunning for off-Strip French, Partage is sitting on a ton of potential and warrants Las Vegas’ attention now as well as in the future as it matures.

RECOMMENDED: Goat Cheese, Chicken, Tian de Legumes, Scallop, Foie Gras, La Banane, La Pomme.

AVOID: Not a single dish was “bad,” but extraneous garnishing and Truffle Oil could easily be eliminated to several plates’ benefit. Also, had the Pork Chop been served as listed (see photo) rather than overwhelmed by Celery Root it would be amongst Sin City’s best.

TIP: Complaints about Parking at The Center at Spring Mountain have been heard and Partage is now offering $7 Valet with that cost deducted from the bill.

Rapidly approaching a decade serving Las Vegas, Cabo Wabo Cantina is one of those Restaurants the media rarely acknowledges, and although “foodies” have hundreds of alternative options both on and off-Strip the simple truth is that Sammy Hagar’s two-story joint at the Miracle Mile Shops remains wildly successful by knowing exactly what it is and playing to those strengths.

Weighing in at over 15,000 square feet, including an outdoor patio overlooking Las Vegas Boulevard and Bellagio’s iconic fountains, Cabo Wabo Cantina promises to bring “the best of Cabo San Lucas to Vegas,” and although the nearest ocean is nearly three hundred miles away both décor and staff aim to make guests feel those beach-bum vibes immediately on entry.

Inauthentically authentic, or perhaps better described as Tex-Mex for the masses, it was after greetings from a podium just inside mall doors that a party of two was offered seats juxtaposing the bar, a young man named Bronson quickly introducing himself and offering excellent service despite a propensity for calling diners “brother” and “my man.”

Playing four screens of College Football at the bar, with additional televisions dotting the interior plus two outside and a massive projector upstairs for events, it was as Ohio State began to dismantle Wisconsin that drinks were presented, Sammy’s Toasted Colada easy-drinking across 24oz of Hagar’s Beach Bar Rum, Coconut and Pineapple while the seasonal Grilled Pineapple Margarita and holiday “Once Bitten” each paired top-shelf Spirits with fresh Fruit at a fair price.

Well-known as a Happy Hour Hot-Spot, but equally under-regarded for Breakfast served from 8am until 11am daily, it was by arriving thirty minutes before transition that guests were able to access both halves of Cabo Wabo’s menu, four slices of grilled Banana Bread delicious but a bit steep at $8.95 while Chilaquiles on crispy Tortilla Chips, loaded Spuds and Croissant French Toast were all built to share and equally enjoyable with special attention warranted for the latter’s intense butteriness inside caramelized edges.

Taking a few minutes to peruse the space between courses, platinum records and guitars from Sammy Hagar’s Van Halen days interspersed with old photos and graffiti, it was while tunes ranging from rock to country played overhead that lunch options were presented, awkwardly named “Fundido de Queso con Chorizo” a bit underwhelming thanks to a lack of Meat and heat amidst gooey Cheese while Tacos fared better, both housemade Barbacoa and Carne Asada well seasoned while grilled Mahi-Mahi picked up tons of texture from Cabbage plus smoky Crema.

More than just Tex-Mex, several plates bringing beach-town vibes and coastal Mexican flavors inland, those seeking something light would be well-served to explore either or both of two Ceviches, Shrimp a bit heated by Jalapenos while Ahi eats like Poke, though in the case of the former a better bet might just be Sammy’s signature dish flamed in Garlic & Cabo Wabo Tequila-Lime Sauce with a side of cheesy Rice.

Rounding out savories with four Taquitos, $10.95 a bargain for crunchy shells packed with seasoned Chicken beneath a blanket of Cheese with sides of Pico and Guacamole, it was after refreshing the palate with House Blend Coffee that Dessert arrived, a request for two turned into three by Bronson’s “can’t miss” recommendation of Fried Ice Cream that comes in an enormous volume and manages to trump both slightly flaccid Churros as well as decadent Bread Pudding soaked in Custard and studded with Raisins.

FOUR STARS: Regardless of how you feel about the Sammy vs. David debate there’s little doubt regarding who has done more with their fame, and at the Las Vegas outpost of Cabo Wabo Cantina the former Van Halen lyricist has achieved a fantastic blend of atmosphere, booze and food that is better than you’d assume to keep packing the place with guests.

RECOMMENDED: Sammy’s Toasted Colada, Croissant French Toast, Huevos con Chilaquiles, Sammy’s Tequila Shrimp, Chicken Taquitos, Fried Ice Cream, Bread Pudding.

AVOID: Fundido de Queso con Chorizo, Churros, Fake Maple Syrup (bring your own).

TIP: Stop by between 3:00pm and 5:00pm from Monday through Friday for half-off Margaritas, Sangria, Draft Beer and select Appetizers such as Dos Ceviches, Nachos, Taquitos and Guacamole. Also visit the Cabo Wabo’s event page for football specials, black Friday bargains and more.

Serving Las Vegas for nearly forty years one might assume Metro Pizza has the delivery game down to a science, but by utilizing a central phone number and e-mail specifically for catering John Arena and Sam Facchini’s Pizzeria goes one step further than most to assure seamless customer service.

Featuring locations North, South, East and West, attentive staff acting as triage to assure timely arrival of Food, utensils, plates and condiments, it was on Thursday that #supportlocal lunch once again received everything ten minutes early with staff ready to dig in.

Suitable for almost any budget, though recent changes have eliminated some items with the online menu yet to reflect those adjustments, it was half-selecting and otherwise deferring the order largely to Metro that four Pies plus Bread, Entrees, Salad and Dessert were received for under $15 per guest, the all-inclusive cost predictably yielding enough for all plus plenty of leftovers.

Now the tenth time delivering to this office, in addition to a dozen or more visits to locations on Decatur or Sky Pointe, it was beginning with Salad that many once again praised Metro’s duo of housemade Dressings, though those more concerned with eating while Food was still temperature appropriate predictably went straight for the recently launched “Zamboni” Pizza complete with two Meats, Roasted Peppers and a generous drizzle of Hot Honey.

Moving next to Meatballs, the combination of Pork and Beef with almost no binder predictably dense and rich in contrast to tangy Tomato Sauce, it is no surprise that Metro’s Sausage, Peppers and Onions also performed beautifully amongst a staff that frequently gravitates towards pronounced spicing and big flavors.

Not about to pass by 86th Street, the cold-fermented Crust remaining defiantly light despite its thickness even after traveling ten miles, the decision to add a stuffed Pie on this visit was due to a request for “just” Cheese by some guests, a gooey blend of three between two layers delicious on its own or dipped in Sauce while another standard Cheese Pizza showed off Metro’s Ingredient quality in a more expected way.

Finishing with Metro Pizza’s Dessert platter for the first time, fifteen filled-to-order Cannoli outlasting more familiar choices such as Chocolate Cake and Espresso-soaked Tiramisu, suffice it to say that recently renamed “Four High Carrot Cake” has lost none of what made it one of Sin City’s best while New York-Style Cheesecake has been upgraded by a crackling layer of Sugar.

N/A: Making it blog policy to not ‘rate’ places based on catering alone there is a reason John and Sam have been successfully serving Las Vegas for so long, a good part of it skill and doing things the right way, but also by hiring good people and focusing on the customer to deliver on their promises no matter how big or small the budget.

RECOMMENDED: 86th Street Square Pie, Meatballs, Zamboni, Chopped Salad, Cannoli, Four High Carrot Cake.

AVOID: N/A.

Appetizer Trio – Baked BBQ Pork Bun, Spring Roll with Egg White and Shrimp, Shrimp Toast with Black Truffle and Foie Gras Sauce

Sauce Sampler – Sambal, Soy, Chili Oil

Dim Sum – Pork and Shrimp Siu Mai, Har Gow, Shrimp and Chives Dumpling

Steamed Wagyu Bundle with Green Apple and Mushroom

Steamed Abalone with Chicken in “Mantou” Cup

Steamed Chilean Seabass Hong Kong Style

Steamed Maine Lobster with Homemade Sauce

Pan Fried Turnip Cake with Homemade XO Sauce

Dessert Trio – Sweet Osmanthus Jelly with Goji Berries, Deep Fried Sweet Pumpkin Ball with Custard, Sweet Taro Cream with Coconut and Sago

When Tim Ho Wan debuted at The PALMS in late September it marked the Restaurant’s fifth location outside of Hong Kong or Japan, and despite tepid reviews from hundreds of early visitors a decision was made to explore “the world’s cheapest Michelin-starred restaurant” on Tuesday evening as a group of fourteen.

Rapidly expanding since a 2009 debut in Mong Kok, Chef Mak Kwai Pui putting talents refined at three-star Michelin Lung King Heen to good use alongside partner Leung Fai Keung, Tim Ho Wan promises “authentic taste at a reasonable price,” though like many things in Las Vegas both quality and value must be gauged in relative terms.

Just the latest change in The PALMS’ “From dust to Gold” rebrand, a sizable space adjacent their parking garage offering plentiful seating with full views of both kitchen and Dim Sum room, it was after confirming reservations for the PDR that guests filed in at 6:30pm, the room listed as Maximum Occupancy of thirteen soon overflowing and A/V equipment never functioning properly, even after calling a technician.

Not the last American parlor from these “Dim Sum Specialists,” Houston coming soon, it was by way of a man fluent in Cantonese that a pre-set menu was pre-arranged in six courses, two special requests in addition to eleven pieces of Dim Sum each tallying $2400 after tax, tip and limited Alcohol.

Busy early, but quieting by nine o’clock with the private dining room largely soundproof regardless, it was while several groups conversed that Beverages arrived slowly, nearly thirty minutes passing before receiving the Sakura in a strange metal vessel that concealed a mix of Vodka, Almond and Citrus with a pronounced floral aroma.

Presenting course one as Appetizers, the baked and fried trio arriving before some Drinks, it was right out the gate that Tim Ho Wan presented its signature Pork Bun, a weight about half that of places on Spring Mountain attributable to the crisp exterior and freshness while Spring Rolls and Shrimp Toast were slightly greasy, the latter in particular though it did do a nice job melding luxury ingredients into a single, rich flavor.

Not wasting any time before refreshing settings for course two, service subsequently slower and highly professional throughout a three-hour stay, Dim Sum again offered three distinct items, the Har Gow failing due to its overly thick wrap while both Crystal Chive Dumpling and Siu Mai were more dainty, though the former was most certainly benefitted by one of three Sauces.

Offering more “luxury” Ingredients next, domestic Wagyu with Asparagus and Apple losing anything gained from good Beef by way of thinned Sauce that tastes a bit like A1, it seems ground Chicken in cupped Bao would have tasted mostly similar without tiny fragments of Abalone, though specially requested Hong Kong-Style Seabass was exquisite in a bath of sweetened Soy, Sherry and Ginger.

Apparently paying top-dollar for off-menu Lobster, its Tail snappy beneath a blanket of Butter, Claws fared less well thanks to a distinct taste of chlorine which thus allowed fried Turnip Cakes to steal the spotlight – first on their own and then more so when the event’s organizer suggested dipping the soft cubes in Hoisin.

Exploring more of the room before Dessert, Tim Ho Wan’s bar area showing The Golden Knights versus Chicago with full sound, it was again with a trio that the evening concluded, Osmanthus Jelly not going over well with most while cold Taro Cream and Pumpkin Balls both leaned hard on Coconut to be modestly sweet and texturally compelling.

THREE STARS: Touted as “the world’s cheapest Michelin-starred restaurant,” even though only one location in Hong Kong has been awarded such by the Red Guide, Tim Ho Wan at The PALMS is an immediate upgrade to Las Vegas’ Dim Sum scene, but at $171 per person (about 50% from off-menu specials and seventeen cocktails) the value is dubious.

RECOMMENDED: Baked BBQ Pork Bun, Shrimp Toast, Siu Mai, Steamed Abalone with Chicken, Pan Fried Turnip Cake, Sweet Pumpkin Ball.

AVOID: Har Gow, Wagyu Bundle, Lobster Claw (though there were four at the table and none but the three guests eating one noted the off taste.)

TIP: 10a-2a daily, website menu accurate as of 10/22/19. Lobster and Sea Bass were off-menu requests.

Although new and “exciting” sell, Carson Kitchen has never needed to rely on gimmicks, thus with two weeks to go in the Restaurant’s current 5th anniversary celebration it seemed only right to take one last look at the past while anticipating upcoming expansion and an all new seasonal menu.

Nothing less than iconic entering its sixth year, a milestone reached by less than 20% of Restaurants nationwide (and likely far less in Sin City,) it was sort of last minute that six guests stopped in at 6:30pm, greetings at the hostess podium yielding unclaimed seats near room’s center where a young lady in her vintage rock t-shirt offered excellent customer service throughout a two-hour feast.

Dining with family and friends, including one first-timer, it was after selecting Beverages that a list of favorites were checked-off from Social Plates to Farm & Garden, Cory Harwell’s infamous Chicken Skins starting things off after their Honey bath, but before moving on to fried Green Beans that are as addictive as they are delicious.

Next up, Bacon Jam, everything but a small bit fixed to cast iron gone in a five minutes, it was having rediscovered Oxtail Risotto in August that the dish again shined thanks to Rice with a bit of tooth mixed with Cream, the Mac & Cheese with “Shhh It’s a Secret” ingredients this day’s re-emergent star and undoubtedly one of the best in Sin City.

Continuing with some Vegetarian-friendly fare, Carson Kitchen’s menu always featuring one such Flatbread and currently recognizing Mushrooms with Bleu Cheese plus Caramelized Onions as an all-time great, fans of last year’s Broccoli Crunch should stop in soon for one last look at the Crucifer dressed in Green Goddess while omnivorous guests should not risk FOMO as relates to Chef Harwell’s Wild Boar Sloppy Joe.

Continuing “Between Bread” with the Secret Sunday Chicken recently featured on bestofvegas, an upgrade on Chick-fil-a that is available seven days a week, it was after several handfuls of Tots that Dessert was served, Peach Cake with Mascarpone soon to be retired once again while Donut Bread Pudding bathed in Rum and Bourbon Brownies with housemade Brown Butter Bacon Ice Cream will continue to wow DTLV for the foreseeable future.

FIVE STARS: Poised for expansion five years after making downtown Las Vegas a dining destination, Carson Kitchen’s Summer menu takes a look back at some of Kerry, Cory as well as Matthew’s greatest recipes and brings back fond memories for many while re-introducing the ideas that got them there to others.

RECOMMENDED: Chicken Skins, Tempura Green Beans, Bacon Jam, Black Rice & Oxtail Risotto, Secret Sunday Chicken, Wild Boar Sloppy Joe, Peach Upside-Down Cake, Bourbon Fudge Brownie.

AVOID: N/A.

TIP: Greatest Hits will be available through October, 11:30a-10:00p Sunday through Thursday and till 11:00pm on Friday as well as Saturday.

Delicata Squash, Brussels Sprouts, Cherries, Maple Syrup, Pepitas, Goat Cheese

Drunken Sicilian Grandma Goes to Detroit Pie with Tomato Sauce, Vodka Sauce, Basil Oil

The Mike Drop – Fried Pizza with Ricotta Cheese, Orange Zest, Housemade Raspberry Preserves, Mike’s Hot Honey, Confectioner’s Sugar

Serving as the flagship of John Arena and Sam Facchini’s family of pizzerias since November of 2012, and featuring an expansive footprint including Lulu’s Bread & Breakfast, it was Saturday morning that three guests sat down at Metro Pizza on Sky Pointe for a four course feast from the hands of Pizzaiolo Chris Decker.

Dubbed “America’s Neighborhood Pizzeria” since the early eighties, though past and present Metro Pizza is so much more, it was after choosing from a multitude of tables and booths that a server approached with Beverage options, Chef Arena then graciously opting to sit down and chat about everything from the local dining scene to Las Vegas’ upcoming Pizza Festival and recommendations for Naples.

Not busy just a minute after opening, though filling shortly before noon, it was based on ideas recently featured on Chef Decker’s @everythingbutanchovies Instagram account that lunch began first with Bread, a piping hot Loaf flecked with Seeds entirely irresistible from its supple crumb to Cornmeal-dusted bottom.

Known for using Dough allowed added fermentation time, the result lighter than one might ever expect whether served as a classic New York round or Metro’s world-class “86th Street” Sicilian, it was on a modified “Grandma” base that Chris’ first creation was offered, the combination of house Sausage and pickled Peppers reined in by Provolone atop a semi-rigid base with just enough give that bites broke off easily.

Always improving technique, and recently featuring seasonal Produce from Desert Bloom Eco Farm, round two saw Metro’s Dough worked carefully to maximize its cornicione, the crispiness visually predictable but flexibility equally impressive as a only a slight bend was witnessed in support of Squash, Sprouts, dried Cherries, Maple Syrup, Goat Cheese and Seeds.

Previously stunned by Chef Decker’s take on Detroit’s Red Top, a once-regional Pie reborn by modern Pizzaiolos around the globe, it was under the clever name “Drunken Sicilian Grandma Goes to Detroit” that Mozzarella, Marinara and Basil were supplemented by Vodka Sauce, each of four wedges exquisite in taste and texturally masterful from feather-light center to crunchy, caramelized lattice.

Told that a special Dessert would take some time, but still waiting for suggestions of a better way to spend Saturday morning than getting Pizza-pointers from John Arena while Chris Decker cooks, it was in a brilliant display of showmanship that an unnamed concoction was delivered, it’s fried exterior entirely oilless beneath a shower of Sugar while the inside was loaded with Ricotta and Jam that found added emphasis in Chili-steeped Honey and Citrus.

FIVE STARS: Serving Las Vegas for 37+ years and continuously evolving the concept while slowly growing the brand it would be difficult to say anyone has contributed more to Sin City’s love of Pizza than John Arena, and although any brand featuring more than one space may suffer from inconsistency Metro sets a high standard by rewarding their old customer base with predictable greatness while Chris Decker’s creativity looks towards a new era and without ever neglecting the basics – the same synopsis as always since it warrants repeating.

RECOMMENDED: Anything offered as a special from @everythingbutanchovies Social Media feed is worth asking about. So is the 86th Street Square Pie. And, really, any of the Pizzas.

AVOID: N/A.

Located at 1040 East Flamingo Road, an area dense with Indian Restaurants and UNLV students, it was late 2017 that owner Ulzan Mehta merged India Oven and India Masala to become India Oven Masala Bar & Grill, the interior one of Las Vegas’ most elegant and the combination of dishes representing North and South India offering a great deal of diversity.

Not far from Maryland Parkway and the National Atomic Testing Museum, a $12.99 daily Lunch Buffet expectedly popular with nearly fifty items on rotation, it was to #supportlocal that catering was requested across town on Thursday, the spread for 25 guests arriving on-time, temperature appropriate and complete with all seviceware, plates and utensils.

Happy to let the accountant-turned-cook concoct a menu, three prior catering events pleasing a variety of guests, it was with bold smells perfuming the office that attendees gathered plates and perused options before selecting, familiar items such as moist Tandoori Chicken, fluffy Naan and Salad predictably going first while Samosas also proved popular thanks to both familiarity and their bold taste.

More slow to accept Matter Paneer, a novelty to the group built around springy Cheese and Chickpeas, it was no surprise that Butter Chicken many mistakenly called Tikka Masala also went quickly, the brightness of Coriander particularly noteworthy while creamy Gravy helped sell many on Bone-In Goat Korma.

Requesting no Daal on this visit, but extra Kabab that again disappeared within thirty minutes instead, it was after a few pieces of Naan that Dessert was enjoyed, Gulab Jamub tiny but texturally as expected while Kheer was less sweet than usual and instead nutty with occasional Raisins and plenty of Cardamom.

N/A: Making it blog policy to not ‘rate’ places based on catering alone there are only a few Indian Restaurants in town that offer the breadth and quality to please a diverse staff, and on Thursday Ulzan Mehta and his team at India Oven Masala Bar & Grill outperformed expectations once again.

RECOMMENDED: Butter Naan, Vegetable Samosa, Goat Korma, Tandoori Chicken, Tamarind Chutney, Coconut Chutney, Gulab Jamun.

AVOID: N/A.

TIP: Proud to offer catering as well as a 10% discount to UNLV students, those simply looking for small order delivery will be glad to know the website also offers service by BItesquad

Love My PB&J – Yeast Doughnut, Housemade Raspberry Jelly, Creamy Peanut Butter, Crumble

Station Wagon – Yeast Doughnut Bar, Vanilla Frosting, Butterfinger Whip, Butterfinger Crumbles

Now a fully realized concept, the rushed conversion from ACE Donuts to Pinkbox Doughnuts’ third location retrospectively a bad decision as early reviews critiqued both the store’s décor and product, it was Thursday morning that the space at Fort Apache and Tropicana was found gleaming, clever signage and a giant pink mascot demanding selfies joining more than fifty styles of fried Dough lining shelves.

Good news for fans, though less so for nearby competition who will assuredly need to improve if they wish to keep pace with Las Vegas’ original artisan doughnuttery, it is with warm greetings from friendly staff that guests are greeted on entry, already fair prices sweetened through cheaper-by-the-dozen discounts that apply regardless of whether one chooses OG Classics, Good Fellas, Show Offs or Fancy Pancy.

Occupying 9435 West Tropicana Avenue inside Crossroads Plaza Shopping Center, and now officially open 24-hours with fresh bakes replenishing supply as necessary, it was with items carefully boxed and delivered to an office three miles away that indulgence commenced, a newly devised naming scheme branding Roberto Armanino’s famous Caramel Cheesecake as The Caramelo, though per Shakespeare “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”

Continuing with classics, both Gimme Smore and Vegas Cream attesting to proper frying times as soft pockets surround Cream and Custard without becoming damp, it seems as though July’s “Doughnut of the Month” has decided to stick around thanks to its popularity, the round titled “Purple Rain” a lot like “Sweetie Pie” in terms of taste, though texture is magnified by crumbles placed on top.

Also retaining the “Station Wagon” from August, because why would anyone pass up an opportunity to enjoy airy Butterfinger Whip inside a golden Longjohn, October’s Doughnut of the Month curtails creativity for a cause and succeeds by shellacking a Yeast Twist with Pink Frosting and donating 30-cents from each one sold to Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Impressing as always with a “DoughCro,” widely separated layers with Orange Glaze and a Vanilla core replicating the flavor of a Flintstones Push-Up, fans of Fruit will also not be let down by hefty Apple Fritters or two additional Bismarks, the “Raspberry Squeeze” nestling Housemade Raspberry Jam Filling inside and “Love My PB&J” doubling down with a swirl of Creamy Peanut Butter.

Presumably naming “The Goodman” after Las Vegas’ former or current mayor, and adding emphasis to a traditional Old Fashion with Frosting plus crunchy Sprinkles, another Cake Doughnut from the collection aims to please by replicating the flavors of a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup while those in need of a Girl Scout Cookie fix will do well to order “The Big Samoan” featuring Caramel and Coconut on top with Chocolate Shell on the bottom.

FIVE STARS: A fan of the staff and fried Dough at ACE it was a little sad when the store closed, but leave it to Las Vegas’ best Doughnut shop to step in and fill the void with old favorites and fun new ideas at prices less than a third of what some places are trying to convince guests is appropriate.

RECOMMENDED: The Caramelo, Purple Rain, The Big Samoan, Apple Fritter, The Goodman, Orange Face DoughCro, Raspberry Squeeze, Station Wagon.

AVOID: N/A, but bring cash for orders less than $5.

TIP: Open 24/7, 10% off six and 20% discount on a dozen.

Recently told by two Casino Chefs that they were under orders to make their Food more “#instagramworthy,” there is no doubt Las Vegas most interesting cooking is being offered Off Strip, and with several new plates Sparrow + Wolf continued to show that substance matters more than style on Wednesday evening.

Now firmly entrenched near the top of Las Vegas’ dining hierarchy for almost 30 months, pre-opening hyperbole realized shortly after ironing out expected early issues, it was as a party of three that the Restaurant was found quiet around 6:30pm, the situation soon to change as both bar and dining room were filled just shy of capacity by eight.

Greeted by GM John Anthony shortly after seating, his leadership of a youthful front of house evident in the room’s flow and the way plates are described, it was with Chef Brian Howard on vacation that cooking was left to Alec Paki and Anthony La Mantia, though in credit to Brian those unaware of his absence would have never guessed.

Described as offering “American Cookery,” but absorbing the influences of Las Vegas’ Chinatown without feeling like ‘fusion,’ it is with housemade Bread that all tables should consider getting started, the aggressive use of Sesame bolstered by Butter that tastes like Cheese and that same sort of umami-amplification found in “Chips & Dip” where Fish Rillettes are complimented by Roe and Crème Fraiche.

Reminiscing next of Sparrow + Wolf’s 2018 targeting by vegans with two types of Foie Gras, the daily preparation featuring three seared ounces beneath caramelized Sugar and boozy Figs, it is from the mind of one of the kitchen’s youths that Mousse comes in the form of a landscape, sharp sours and sweetened Shallots each contributing such that no two bites are quite the same.

Serving portions best measured as “medium plates,” IE sharable by two to three but also appropriate for solos, all but those with a particular fondness for Marrow will likely wish to share four roasted Bones topped in Pineapple amidst thick and sticky Peanut Sauce, each bite predictably rich but not too spicy while “Osso Buco Tortellini” places Potato-filled pockets in a Peruvian-influenced Butter Sauce topped by spoon-tender Meat.

Changing up the Octopus, and offering a good portion of charred Tentacles for just $18, it was only Sparrow + Wolf’s “California Shrimp” that came up short amongst new items, the buttered Curry Toast divine on its own and better dipped in Broth while the Crustaceans themselves were enjoyable but sort of just “there” as opposed to being incorporated into the plate.

Not passing up Sin City’s best Side Dish, Brian’s Japanese Sweet Potato with Umeboshi on this night offered with housemade Chinese Sausage on the side for a guest that does not eat Pork, it was after a complimentary glass of minty Amaro that Dessert got started, first with poached Pluots in the form of an adult Sundae followed by equally mature Donuts that eat light in terms of texture as well as sweetness.

Literally putting “the Lime in the Coconut” next, Sparrow + Wolf’s Panna Cotta the sort that will stick-a-spoon-up-straight without feeling heavy, it was while remarking on strength of the Restaurant’s Pastry program that the pièce de résistance arrived, a thick slice of housemade Brioche on this evening served beneath an enormous scoop of Orange Julius Ice Cream with Caramelized Pineapple to protect it from melting.

FIVE STARS: Never shy to share its opinion, and hot out the gate with no signs of slowing, Sparrow + Wolf has earned a reputation as one of Las Vegas’ best restaurants regardless of location, a willingness to change menu items frequently making each visit special while both front of house and kitchen continue to execute at a very high level.

RECOMMENDED: Hearth Baked Bread, Foie Gras and Chicken Liver Mousse, Roasted Bone Marrow, Osso Buco Tortellini, Japanese Sweet Potato, Black Sesame Crullers, Caramelized Honey Toast.

AVOID: The Olive Oil Poached Shrimp seems as though it would be better as a Tartare, though the Bread and Broth are exquisite.

TIP: Sparrow + Wolf’s PDR comfortably seats twenty at separate or communal tables, with menus fully customizable to customer preference. Call 702-790-2147 or e-mail info@sparrowandwolflv.com for details as holiday dates are filling in advance.

Now nearly thirty months old, and currently the only Restaurant confirmed to remain after Hard Rock Hotel & Casino rebrands as Virgin Hotel in 2020, MB|Steak continues to reveal itself as something of a hidden gem even though the menu has only changed slightly since opening.

Secluded from the gaming area, Oyster Bar to one side and Magic Mike Live on the other, MB|Steak is described as being created by the Morton Brothers to “bring the best memories of [their] family’s history to life,” though through the addition of swank lighting and luxury Ingredients prepared by Chef Patrick Anthony Munster this certainly is not the typical chain with locations stretching from California to New York and Mexico to Japan.

Heavily wooded around a spiked Chandelier, and following traditional structure in offering Appetizers, Steaks, Entrees and Sides, it is beginning with Cocktails that most will choose to start their evening, the Spicy Cucumber concoction suggested by a server pleasing the woman celebrating her birthday while a Pineapple Daiquiri went down fast, as did the first of two Loaves of Cheese-crusted Bread from Hard Rock Executive Pastry Chef Mickey Harden.

Shown a pair of well-priced Steak specials, though on the whole MB|Steak’s Prime Beef costs approximately 20% less than similar cuts on Las Vegas Boulevard, it was instead on items intended to be shared than an order was focused, the Crispy Rock Shrimp enjoyable with either of two tangy Sauces while Octopus was smoky and tender on an elongated plate amidst Wine-sweetened Broccolini and Tomatoes.

Choosing the Chopped Salad as a mid-course, Tiger Shrimp with a good sear standing out against a backdrop of Beans, Artichokes and Hearts of Palm brightened by acid and brine, it was per the Lady’s wishes that Chef Munster’s Chil-rubbed Steak carried over from SW Steakhouse was served alongside steamed Crab, the 32oz cooked just past rare offering great taste and texture with up-front heat that dissipates shortly after swallowing.

Repeatedly impressed by MB|Steak’s sides, the Creamed Corn better than in 2017 thanks to better sweating the Poblanos and leaving some Kernels whole, Brussels Sprouts also performed well in an entirely Vegan preparation while Cornmeal and Potatoes each used plenty of Cheese to achieve excellence.

Taking a trip to the upstairs lounge for a view of the city next, and returning just on time for Dessert, it is again thanks to Chef Harden that all five choices are amongst the best of their kind in Sin City, though if forced to prioritize the “New York” Cheesecake is flawlessly textured and complimented by caramelized Bananas plus Popcorn while MB’s multi-layered Carrot Cake remains a mandatory last bite thanks to thin ribbons of Cream Cheese Frosting and plenty of Baking Spices topped in roasted Pineapple.

FOUR AND A HALF STARS: Owned by the Morton family, but certainly not Morton’s Steakhouse, MB|Steak has been confirmed to remain after Hard Rock Hotel & Casino’s rebranding as Virgin, and that is a good thing for fans as service and Chef Munster’s Food has only gotten better from the beginning while Chef Harden’s Desserts have always been impeccable.

RECOMMENDED: Cheese Bread, Chopped Salad, 32oz Roasted Chili Rub Tomahawk, Creamed Corn, Grits, Potato Gratin, Layered Carrot Cake, New York Cheese Cake.

AVOID: N/A.

Gateau Basque (not on the Menu, but a special treat from Chef Harden)

Serving guests at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino for two decades it can safely be stated that Mr. Lucky’s is a Las Vegas icon, and although plans for the space have not yet been announced as Virgin looks to renovate in 2020 the new menu from Chef Chad Castanino offers a level of diversity and craftsmanship that many may not expect from a 24/7 spot just off the gaming floor.

A favorite of concert-goers and the late-night crowd, menus slowly migrating from Breakfast to All-Day and Late Night with trusty American fare bridging all three, it was prior to a show at The Joint that a booth in the Restaurant’s corner was requested, shirts worn by Slash and Guitars signed by The Ramones acting as decoration at arm’s length.

Treated to tunes by Alice in Chains, Foreigner plus Hendrix while dining, and focusing an order on items debuted most recently, it was first by special request that two styles of Pancakes were delivered, the all-day-and-all-night Sweet Cream version soft and fluffy with Vanilla notes while Cookies and Cream Pancakes typically only at Breakfast were rich on their own, and essentially Dessert when slathered with a liberal scoop of Mascarpone.

Shifting savory, an abrupt turn but still in many ways “breakfast,” Chef Castanino’s Warm Spinach Salad comes in the form of housemade Sourdough toasted and topped with Chevre plus Spinach, Onions and Pine Nuts, the Bacon-soaked Dressing adding vibrancy much as tangy Salsa Verde does to the overstuffed Buenos Dias Burrito.

Definitely over-ordering, though housemade Cheese Ravioli in Arrabbiata Sauce comes in a fairly modest portion, those seeking Steak but not wanting to pay MB|Steak prices will likely be pleased with Mr. Lucky’s Strip coated in Peppercorn Sauce, while the handcut Fries cooked crispy are thankfully not overwhelmed by Truffle Oil or Parmesan.

Always ending on a sweet note when Pastry Chef Mickey Harden is involved, his current Cinnamon Roll a laminated masterpiece shellacked in Honey, Caramel and Pecans, French Toast unfortunately seems pretty basic and was served without Mascarpone advertised on the menu, though none of that mattered after tasting Chef Harden’s “Toffee Bar Heaven” Ice Cream Cake that rethinks a Heath Bar in soft layers and continues an unbroken string of hits across all the Hard Rock eateries.

FOUR AND A HALF STARS: Although almost every Las Vegas hotel has a 24/7 spot there is only one Mr. Lucky’s, and although they aren’t going to get nominated for any awards the menu from Chef Chad Castanino is always full of surprises at a fair price. From a Spinach Salad better than many fine dining options to housemade Pasta and some of Sin City’s Best Pancakes, plus desserts by Mickey Harden, if this place doesn’t survive the Virgin rebrand it’ll be sorely missed.

RECOMMENDED: Cookies and Cream Pancakes, Warm Spinach Salad, Steak & Fries, Cinnamon Roll, Toffee Bar Heaven.

AVOID: The French Toast is fairly basic, and was oddly served with Butter rather than Mascarponee as listed on the menu.

TIP: Check out the website for several weekday deals and times during which specific items are typically offered.
