As with every new season Autumn 2018 brings with it a whole host of new ideas at 124 South 6th Street, the occupants of Suite 100 coming off a bold but unbalanced Summer menu to further entice discerning diners into taking a seat and exploring items that may not be entirely “familiar” but feel that way after a few bites.

Called Carson Kitchen based on the building it occupies, though the concept created by Cory Harwell and the late Kerry Simon barely displays their name, it was along with one first-timer that a table for four was found right next to the hostess podium, backed chairs provided for two seniors while other patrons occupy a variety of options ranging from metal stools to high-tops and seats at the bar.

Never content to rest on past success, the small kitchen seemingly posing no limitation on a team of talented women and men currently led by Chef Scott Simon, it was shortly after sitting down that Beverages arrived, Mr. Matthew Harwell passionately describing the inspiration and Spirits involved in bitter-sweet “Marty’s In The Barrel” that paired nicely to Carson’s iconic Chicken Skins as well as the returned spicy Crab Dip and shaved Brussels Spouts that play well off Kale thanks to Bacon and bright Dressing.

Making fans in DTLV since Summer of 2014 and in no way slowing down, every seat including those upstairs accounted for on arrival, it was with share-plates cleared that the stage was set for two Sandwiches, an Imperial Saison from Funkwerks enjoyed by those with a taste for Hops while all were happy with Cory’s “Secret Sunday Chicken” and the all-new Hot Italian that reminisces of a Muffaletta but does not get bogged down with too much Oil like many riffs on the NOLA icon.

Not sending back any Tots, the crispy Spuds always surprisingly addictive, it was once again that Matt found use for Velvet Falernum in a cocktail titled 25 or 6 to 4, the musical reference anything but one-note with two types of Rum and enough sweetness help tame three spicy dishes including a new Flatbread that some felt was too bitter as a result of both Broccoli Rabe and Spinach though everyone enjoyed tender Baby Eggplant given a Thai twist and Pasta Shells offering Meat and heat mellowed by plenty of creamy Goat Cheese.

Building on festive flavors with Don’t Re-Po My Repo, Baking Spices lingering after each sip of the Spirit-forward Cocktail, longtime fans of Carson Kitchen will recognize both Salmon and Chicken Thighs as changes in set-up with the latter a nod to Kerry and Scott’s youth while an all-new Pork dish may be the Restaurant’s best new item in several seasons thanks to a light Mustard and Pretzel Crust that finds a eager dance partner in fragrant Maple Syrup.

Cool enough to enjoy hot Coffee with a trio of sweets, the Bourbon Fudge Brownie and Donut Bread Pudding unchanged and still excellent, it is in-tune with the season that Autumn’s new Dessert delivers Cranberries and Apples inside delicate Puff Pastry, the choice of Cardamom over more traditional Cinnamon both warm and welcomed as is the Brandy Icing.

FIVE STARS: Again pulling no punches, a track-record of success earning Carson Kitchen the right to take chances, Autumn 2018 sees Cory, Scott, Matthew and the rest executing great Food and Beverage at the same affordable price-point as always, and whether one is making their first or fourteenth visit the variety of choices offers “something for everyone” fare that still manages to impress those who’ve also traveled to dine at some of the World’s best.

RECOMMENDED: Brussels Sprout Caesar, Crispy Chicken Skins, Hot Italian, Secret Sunday Chicken, Goat Goulash, Pork Tenderloin, Chicken Thighs, Bourbon Fudge Brownie.

AVOID: As above, the Sausage & Broccoli Rabe Flatbread leans bitter but for fans of Broccoli Rabe that should pose no problem.

TIP: 11:30a-10:00p Sunday through Thursday and till 11:00pm on Friday as well as Saturday.

If there is any flaw to having a Restaurant of Bardot Brasserie’s caliber in one’s hometown it is that every visitor wants to dine there, so for the third time in as many months it was at Aria’s second floor ode to French Cuisine that a meal was enjoyed, this time as a group of seven celebrating the engagement of a couple from Washington DC.

Unchanged from four weeks prior, and with Chef Smith taking a well-earned vacation during which he too got engaged, it was minutes past noon that out-of-town guests filled seats at a lengthy table, some Cocktails and Iced Tea replacing bottomless Bubbles prior to the arrival of course one offering a mix of new and old including Salmon treated like Pastrami and Snails wrapped in Puff Pastry.

Busy and boisterous at first but subsequently calming, familiar servers maneuvering around several large groups, it was with two of most items that Brunch continued with Bardot’s “Seasonal Fruit,” the Buckwheat Donuts and Frozen Yogurt Parfait praised in particular by four women of various ages as was Josh’s crisp plate of Endive and Crab while guys focused more on two Foie Gras Parfaits spread liberally on toasted Country Bread.

Clearing most plates including housemade and imported Charcuterie, the chunky Pork Pate and Rillettes each deserving of special mention as relates to their authenticity, it was last but not least that Baguettes with Butter and Bardot’s Pastry Basket concluded course one, the Canele and Chocolate Croissant as good as ever while Kouign Amann have seemingly improved as these two offered up even more laminated sheets and a center of still-melted Butter.

Scaling back course two in terms of numbers but certainly not execution, Chef Smith’s “Breakfast Sandwich” quickly divided and conquered, it was for the first time in a while that a Benedict made an appearance, the shredded Short Rib, Eggs and Sauce still not enough to crisp Puff Pastry while two orders of Hunter’s Waffles dazzled even those not usually ken on Duck thanks to citrusy Maltaise Sauce.

Apparently assuming Bardot’s now television-famous French Toast was Dessert, each visitor partaking liberally of fluffy Brioche crowned with seared Foie Gras and accoutrements both creamy and crunchy, it was not until four more Pastries arrived in 2×2 fashion that the mistake was realized, some only taking bites while others went all-in and finished every bite of Mille Feuille, tableside Baked Alaska and swirled Nutella Brioche with only a few slivers of Dark Chocolate Macaron left behind.

FIVE STARS: Taking on fans of DC’s Le Diplomate twice, and predictably setting a new standard for French Brasseries both times, Bardot proved on Saturday that even when Chef Smith is not on-site the experience remains world class thanks to a dedicated kitchen and general managers capable of leading their team even when the space is packed.

RECOMMENDED: Foie Gras French Toast, Canele, Kouign Amann, Pastrami Cured Salmon, Foie Gras Parfait, Hunter’s Waffle, Bardot Breakfast Sandwich, Baked Alaska, Mille Feuille.

AVOID: N/A.

TIP: In addition to Dinner and the Strip’s best Brunch BARDOT is now open for lunch Monday through Friday 11am-2:30pm.

Fortunate enough to have visited Scarpetta NYC in May of 2009, long before Scott Conant’s rise to Superstardom, it was nonetheless with skepticism that Masso Osteria at Red Rock was viewed at first, the overwhelming failure of its predecessor from day one dissuading a visit until a trusted friend spoke of top tier service and Food to match.

Now open for nine months in the old Salute space, Station Casinos no doubt having learned a thing or two about pricing and the importance of customer service in Clique Hospitality’s side-by-side shutters, Masso Osteria brings Chef Conant’s unique style of Italian from Las Vegas Boulevard to the Suburbs and does so without the pretense of “Celebrity,” instead placing the face of Chopped as a footnote even though he continues to make at least monthly appearances.

Sitting down to dinner one night after one of Masso’s special events, a 5:20 arrival finding the space quiet but soon more than 3/4 full, it was in a curved booth suited for four that greetings were offered by General Manager Christian Pollock, the familiar face from Jean Georgs Steakhouse ever a gentleman and in full control of a staff that never missed a beat over the course of nearly three hours.

Toqued by Chef Victor Rodriguez in the tile kitchen originally built for Salute, subtle changes in lighting and two bars giving the lengthy space a more soulful feel, it was after perusing menus that the Chef’s Tasting was selected with a few additions, course one featuring housemade Stromboli stuffed with smoked Cheese that tops the complimentary version at Scarpetta by miles while three styles of table bread also fare well, though the still-frozen Butter was certainly an oversight.

Impressed further by three Spreads, though wary to overindulge with several courses to come, it was on Mr. Pollock’s suggestion that Masso’s first Soup was next presented in a tasting portion, the creamy Puree of Squash given depth by Red Pepper Oil and a nice lead-in to smoky Octopus atop Broccolini and Tomatoes plus Conant’s oft-copied Polenta that is just as creamy and decadent today as it was nine years ago thanks to lots of Butter, Bacon and Mushrooms plus just a touch of Chicken Stock.

Not anticipating a Salad Course, though the Tasting Menu is only listed as “Family-style for the Table,” it was with serviceware re-set that two large piles of green arrived next, the Caesar a fairly standard presentation save for Cheese Crisps while Masso Osteria’s “Kale Parmesan” may just be the best of its kind thanks to plenty of moisture and textural contrast provided by finely crushed Nuts and elegant Avocado Vinaigrette.

Obviously not about to leave out Chef Conant’s empire-building Spaghetti, the Pomodoro’s secret now published but its simplicity still inspiring, it was with a light tingle of Red Pepper on the lips that clouds of Ricotta and Mascarpone were tasted, the sliced Asparagus and Squash creating a very fresh plate while Squid Ink Squid Ink Tagliolini was not as hot as “Spicy Crab” would lead on to believe, though the bounty of Seafood and vibrant Tomatoes made it delicious just the same.

Well-sated but smartly saving room for Secondi, the Tagliata di Manzo a beautiful cut of Beef that was unfortunately a little overwhelmed by Salt and roasted Peppers, it was perhaps expected that the 14oz Bone-In Veal Chop would steal the spotlight by more than just size-criteria, the kitchen using sliced Tomatoes to protect Breading from Sauce and melted Burrata which kept each and every bite crisp, some of it even so twelve-hours later as leftovers.

Barely making a dent in Sides of tender Mushrooms or Sprouts dressed in an Anchovy-based Dressing, both also re-warming well, it was after the palate was cleansed by Coffee that Dessert arrived, Conant’s Salted Caramel Budino every bit as praiseworthy as Nancy Silverton’s famous Butterscotch version in terms of taste and smoothness while the tableside Triamisu and seasonal Crostata are also excellent, though none come close to a thick round of “Sticky Toffee Banana Pudding” that melds Fruit, Coffee and Booze with hot and cold components into Sin City’s best Dessert of 2018.

FOUR AND A HALF STARS: Unfortunately allowing “celebrity chef” biases and Red Rock’s previous Italian Restaurant to delay a visit it is with great pleasure that this writer admits he was wrong about Masso Osteria, the fact that Chef Conant visits frequently from his home in Arizona no doubt keeping Victor Rodriguez’s kitchen inspired while Mr. Pollock continues to show the same quality leadership skills that have always made his front of house great.

RECOMMENDED: Salume and Smoked Mozzarella Stromboli, Creamy Polenta “Boscaiola”, Kale Parmesan, Pasta Al Pomodoro, Ricotta and Mascarpone Gnudi, Veal Chop “Parmigiana”, Salted Caramel Budino, Sticky Toffee Banana Pudding.

AVOID: Frozen Butter should never make it to the table and Tagliata di Manzo could have used a little less Salt.

TIP: 5pm-10pm Sunday through Thursday, till 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays plus Brunch from 10:30am – 2:30pm on Sundays.

Frequently called upon at lunch it was for a last-minute #supportlocal Breakfast that Rosallie was tapped on Wednesday, Chritophe and Jonathan putting together ten of their new Brioche Sandwiches plus Quiche, Pie, Coffee and Pastries for a group of twenty-five and doing it all within half an hour of the Le French Café’s 7:00am opening.

Always impressive and rarely lacking for surprises, shelves recently offering Apricot Pies and Pumpkin Tarts in-tune with the season, it was immediately on arrival that staff filled cups with bold Coffee before making choices, many choosing halves in order to sample more variety and word quickly spreading that the Vegetarian Quiche and buttery Toast surrounding melted Brie and housemade Pesto were especially delicious.

Assuring first choice by way of greeting the delivery man, a focus on new Pastries followed by additional items after staff had made their picks, it was based on Almond Croissants still being warm-to-touch that one of Chef Pluvinet’s world-class Viennoiseries preceded a new Custard Danish loaded with fresh Apricots and Coconut shavings, the Fruit mellowed nicely by its creamy support while laminated layers remained crisp and flaky.

Working further bites in between job duties, a private office quickly covered with crumbs, it was after half of another Croissant packed with Raspberry Jam that attention shifted to more Fruit, the newly released base for French Toast riddled with Blueberries and baked like Bostock so that the top became lightly caramelized, though not the base.

Tasting a few Christmas Cookies next, memories of childhood roused as Grandpa was never without a bag of sugared store-bought shapes in December, suffice it to say that these buttery morsels are even more addictive than back then while Meringues shaped like Christmas Trees would make a festive gift for those seeking something exceedingly light and equally sweet.

Enjoying one slice of a whole Almond and Pear Pie later it was presumably a lack of labeling that saw Nutella Almond Pie still leftover as lunch approached, both it and half of a Croissant filled with the same rescued along with more Coffee and neither particularly “French” but still worth every calorie.

N/A: Making it blog policy to not ‘rate’ places based on catering alone Rosallie has twice proven invaluable in continuing to #supportlocal when last-minute issues arise, this spread in particular impressive thanks to the newly launched Breakfast Sandwich plus a vast array of Pastries that attest to Jon and Christophe’s continued commitment to getting better each day even though they are already Las Vegas’ best.

RECOMMENDED: Almond Croissant, Blueberry Bostock, Raspberry Almond Croissant, Almond Pear Pie, Christmas Butter Cookies, Brioche Sandwiches

Slowly finding their place in a saturated market it was for the second time that #supportlocal lunch relied on Shiraz Restaurant this Tuesday, Mr. Raja Abdul Majid putting together a spread of items at $15 per person that was delivered by Chef Jainine Jaffer at precisely 11:30am, as requested.

Serving a diverse group of attendees, the wide range of ages and races varying in terms of culinary experience as well as heat tolerance, it was suggesting some “safer” choices this time that many immediately gravitated to items such as Hummus and Falafel plus Naan treated as Pita, Chef Jaffer’s take on the traditional Chickpea Fritters moist and nicely spiced as were Indian Pakora that paired nicely with both housemade Yogurt and spicy Raita.

Impressed by an off-menu Salad featuring Croutons made from leftover Barbari Bread, the dressing and Garlic playing well off fresh Vegetables including plenty of Radishes, it was unsurprising that many Hispanic staff enjoyed Cumin-heavy Chicken Biryani while others stuck to marinated Kabobs of Chicken or Beef, though word quickly spread that Chicken Tikka Masala was also delicious which led to the whole large tray being gone by meal’s end.

Finding less common dishes a tougher sell, the fact that most stews are not particularly photogenic undoubtedly part of the problem, it was still a group of perhaps ten who chose to sample spicy Beef and Split Peas as well as Bone-in Goat Korma, the leftovers happily taken home by an Indian physician who praised both while Persian Fesenjan deemed “too sweet” by some was a favorite of presenters plus other Doctors, as was the city’s best Halwa though others seemed more fond of Jainine’s special Chai Spice Bundt Cake.

N/A: Making it blog policy to not ‘rate’ places based on catering alone the professionalism of Shiraz’s program is everything one might hope for, and learning from the past a second #supportlocal lunch from Jainine Jaffer and Raja Abdul Majid at Shiraz Restaurant was even more successful than the first, everyone expectedly fond of Tikka Masala while Goat Korma went over well, as did the Kabobs which left plenty of Halwa and Fesenjan for those in the know.

RECOMMENDED: Butter Naan, Falafel, Chelo Kabob Koobideh, Fesenjan, Chicken Tikka Masala, Mutton Korma, Gajar Ka Halwa.

Having twice visited Morels French Steakhouse & Bistro for Brunch, once long-prior to calling Las Vegas home, it was as a party of four that dinner was finally sat down to on Saturday, the Bar area hopping for a special Wine event while the grand dining room sat approximately half –full with a wide range of patrons.

Toqued by Chef JL Carrera and now the brand’s flagship after deciding to opt-out of their lease at Hollywood’s Grove, a recent menu overhaul adding some lighter choices to old favorites including plenty of Beef and Cheese, it was with reservations confirmed that guests were led to a rounded table at room’s center, the wait-staff all well-dressed and professional as Water was filled while diners weighed the options.

Known best for their Fromagerie and Strip-facing patio, the weather unfortunately a touch too cold for the latter this evening, it was after a Cocktail order was placed that Bread arrived with Butter and Olive Puree, an Amuse Bouche quick to follow featuring Peaches and fresh Burrata drizzled in Vincotto.

Low-lit and modest in volume, nicely padded seats beneath high ceilings giving the space a “Big” Steakhouse feel while risqué paintings add a certain charm, it was no more than fifteen minutes before space was cleared in anticipation of three Appetizers, a Martini glass of Ceviche pairing nicely to the Tequila-based Mentirosa while Tomato Soup with a touch of smoke and hidden Cheese ball was big enough to share, as was Morel’s Classic Cheese Fondue that was ordered “for two” at $10 per person but large enough to serve four or more.

Mindful to not overdo it with melted Cheese, the fact that sliced Bread ran out with at least another quarter-cup remaining probably a blessing in disguise, it was with serviceware re-set that a brief wait preceded the arrival of entrees and sides, the whole table soon filled and most diners starting off their plates with sides including roasted Sprouts with salty Pork and Balsamic, extra cheesy Noodles dubbed “Macaroni” but not really and multi-layered Potatoes Dauphinois that would not have been out of place in a formal French Restaurant.

Not particularly sold on Onion Rings’ $9 price tag, a cost of nearly two-dollars each unjustified by size or quality in compared to the national chains, it was thankfully Meat and Pasta that performed far better, the Short Rib presented sort of like Pot Roast and delicious save for a few spots overwhelmed by Bacon while handmade Rigatoni held up to meaty Bolognese and gooey puddles of Ricotta Cheese.

Unwilling to let any of the thinly pounded Pork go home in a doggy-bag, the bold flavor and crisp texture befitting an impressive presentation, it was only when seven Desserts arrived that the mistake was realized…though finding a bit of extra stomach space became easily justified by textbook Choux sandwiching Toasted Almond Ice Cream doused in thick Chocolate as well as housemade Macarons from which Coconut and Mocha were standouts.

Far from impressed by the Strawberry Crepe, an unannounced addition of Bananas doing no favors to the overly thick Pancake, it was fortunate that an Apple Crostada cooked crisp with Sugar stepped-up as did the yin-and-yang of Chocolate offered by airy Mousse and a dense Tart, the fact that Smoked Ricotta Ice Cream was sold out another bummer but made up for nicely by Cinnamon Frozen Yogurt that tastes a lot like Horchata.

FOUR STARS: Easily overlooked on a property boasting three Steakhouses and a French Bistro boasting Thomas Keller’s name Morels French Steakhouse & Bistro still has a lot of things going for it besides the Strip view, and with Chef Carrera now focusing on some lighter options the “something for everybody” space offers a lot of reasons to visit any time of day and with any sort of group.

RECOMMENDED: Classic Cheese Fondue, Potatoes Dauphinois, Almost Famous Mac & Cheese, Rigatoni Bolognese, Bone-in Pork Milanese, Classic Profiteroles, Macaron Quartet, Made-to-Order Chocolate Mousse

AVOID: Strawberry Crepe, Onion Rings.

TIP: Open 8am daily and keep your eyes on https://www.palazzo.com/restaurants/morels-steakhouse-bistro.html for future “Meet the Wine Maker” events.

Known best locally for their three acre cactus garden and seasonal lights it was instead for Ethel M’s famous Chocolates that a visit was made on Saturday, the recently launched $15 “Chocolate Tasting Experience” a fun for all ages affair with a bit of history, some education and – of course – some of the factory’s signature confections.

Offered at $15 per person with pre-arranged booking, though on less busy days guests may be able to schedule on-site depending on staffing, it is seated with four pieces of Candy tempting that the story of Mr. Mars and him mother Ethel is told, a man’s passion for Chocolate even past retirement explaining why Henderson is now home to the all-natural Chocolate Factory which is no longer associated with the international Mars brand.

Moving past history and into tasting, Ingredient sourcing and facts about Cocoa Beans discussed at length, it is from White to Dark that guests are treated to four Ethel M top-sellers, the Pecan Caramel Rapture taking Turtles to a new level thanks to Caramel that is smooth instead of sticky while the “Satin Crème” a rare feat by pairing Citrus to Dark Chocolate without either taste overwhelming the other.

No doubt driving sales, a 20% off coupon presented as a diploma, it is from the tasting room that pupils exit through the gift shop, a whole lot more sweetness to be found there including Bars, Bon Bons, T-Shirts and Truffles with the later starting at $25 for twelve pieces but a far better bargain when increasing to forty-eight for $50.

Certainly not “cheap,” but at the same time a better bargain than any edible souvenir one might find on The Strip, it was from a dozen that tastes were taken of five, seasonal “Pumpkin Spice” by far the worst and actually unpleasant in its overwhelming aromatics while the wrapped “Milk Chocolate Almond Butter Crisp” performed beautifully in terms of taste and texture as did a $3 square of buttery Brittle and an all-natural tribute to Mars’ eponymous, but discontinued, Candy Bar.

FOUR STARS: Lasting about thirty minutes the Tasting Experience is a worthwhile addition to Ethel M and for those planning to make a purchase anyhow the cost is basically absorbed by the discount plus Chocolates and bottled Water plus a souvenir pen.

RECOMMENDED: Pecan Caramel Rapture Milk Chocolate, Pecan Brittle, Milk Chocolate Almond Butter Crisp, Chewy Caramel Dark Chocolate, Mars Bar by Ethel M Chocolates.

AVOID: White Chocolate Pumpkin Spice.

TIP: Tickets to the Tasting Experience can be purchased via Yelp! or GroupOn for $10, and occasionally $8 through the latter.

The Stove [4,] Henderson NV

The Stove

Coffee

Butter Croissant, Vegan Maple Walnut Cookie, Blueberry Scone, Rocky Road Muffin, Blueberry Muffin, Zucchini Muffin with Raisins

Chilaquiles – Tortilla Chips, Green Sauce, Smoked Pork, Oaxacan Cheese, Scrambled Eggs, Black Beans, Crema, Overeasy Egg

Butternut Raviolis – Butternut Squash, Cheese, Brown Butter, Garlic, Arugula, Fried Egg, Toast

Chicken Fried Foie – Belgian Waffle, Foie Gras, Maple Gastrique, Pickles, Pickled Red Onions

Hangover Corndog – Beef Dog, Sweet Corn Batter, Cream Cheese, Onion Confit, Sunny-Side Egg, Sriracha, Simple Salad

Pecan Pie Pancakes – Buttermilk Pancakes, Pecans, Praline Filling, Pie Crust Crumble

Cinnamon Toast – Cinnamon, Butter

Crème Brulee Oatmeal – Apple Oatmeal Brown Sugar, Custard, Caramelized Sugar, Strawberries, Blueberries, Blackberries, Raspberries

Now serving Sin City for four months it was as a party of five that Breakfast was enjoyed at The Stove on Saturday morning, and although jammed-packed with a special event also planned for later the team from front of house to kitchen was yet again firing on all cylinders.

Fully entrenched in the old Firefly space, added foliage and knick-knacks creating a great looking room with plenty of variance from right to left, it was with the main dining room full that seating was offered at a sizable booth in the Tea Room, looks back toward Las Vegas Boulevard and Red Rock Canyon enjoyed as light music played overhead.

Happy to see Chefs Antonio Nunez and Scott Commings so busy, the availability of internet check-in definitely benefiting those who visit on weekends, it was from a familiar service staff led by Landon Pugmire that Coffee was prepared while menus were perused, a welcoming Pastry board arriving with three Muffins from which dense Chocolate and Marshmallow was best while a soft and buttery Scone also earned praise, as did the Maple Walnut Cookie so soft and chewy that it was hard to imagine being Vegan.

Focusing on new items or those not previously tasted instead of past favorites, though both the Full Monty and Bananas Foster Pancakes were considered, it was with five plates and two sides soon present that table-space was overwhelmed, the decision of where to start favoring savory in the form of Chilaquiles that feature crispy Chips and house-smoked Pork smothered in Cheese, Eggs and tangy Tomatillo Salsa atop a pureed Black Bean base.

Moving next to the oft-praised “Hangover Corndog,” Sriracha on the side for more sensitive palates, this Dog immediately outperforms most thanks to the all-beef Sausage and continues henceforth with Cornbread Batter, Cream Cheese and Onions made a fork-and-knife situation by sunnyside Eggs while the newly launched Ravioli also uses Yolk to meld Cheese, Butter and pureed Squash inside tender Noodles.

Reminiscing of childhood with Cinnamon Toast, each triangle justifying its $1 through plenty of Butter and bold aromatics, it was next that an item “for the refined palate” took center-stage, Foie Gras undergoing a multi-step process to survive deep-frying and come out crispy atop housemade Waffles complete with Pickles and Maple Gastrique that harmoniously blend sweet and savory.

Unable to leave without some of Chef Nunez’s Pancakes, the decision between five styles not an easy one, suffice it to say that those seeking “Dessert for Breakfast” need look no further than The Stove’s Pecan Pie stack with fluffy Buttermilk rounds separated by what is essentially melted Pralines, though a little item hidden in plain sight on the menu’s front page proved equally noteworthy in the form of custardy Crème Brulee Oatmeal that is anything but your typical stovetop stuff.

FIVE STARS: Previously stating that Nunez and Comming’s biggest challenge going forward would be balancing their own creativity with local palates it is with the Tea Room now truncated and menu edits in place that The Stove looks better than ever while still offering plenty of choices for the “Bacon and Eggs” sort and “Foodies” alike.

RECOMMNDED: Vegan Maple Walnut Cookie, Chilaquiles, Butternut Raviolis, Chicken Fried Foie, Pecan Pie Pancakes, Crème Brulee Oatmeal.

AVOID: Muffins would be better off with no liner as extricating them from the paper makes them both messy and tough to share.

TIP: 7a-3p Monday through Thursday and 7a-4p Friday through Sunday with online check-in using TablesReady strongly encouraged between 10a-2p.

Quickly approaching their third anniversary it was for the sixth time that lunch was catered by Big B’s Texas BBQ on Wednesday, and much like every other time the service was timely and professional with everything including serviceware, plates and napkins in abundance, not to mention more than enough smoked Meat and Sides for a group of twenty-five.

Located all the way across town but more than capable of distance delivery, an array of packages built to suit parties ranging from ten to the thousand Natalia and Brian will be serving for Thanksgiving, it was this time via EZcater instead of direct from the Restaurant that an order was placed due to speaker’s requirements, but in their typically personalized manner delivery was made by Big B himself as staff lined up with plates in hand.

Guaranteed to leave lunch rooms and hallways scented like burning wood straight out of Texas, the couple who hand-built their Restaurant at 3019 St. Rose Parkway famously making regular trips South for more of The Lone Star state’s finest timber, it was beginning with gooey Mac n’ Cheese plus chunky Potato Salad that most began filling plates, Creamed Corn a tougher sell to those of Hispanic backgrounds who apparently are not familiar with such though the sweet and tangy Beans imbued with Brisket scraps was also quite popular.

Moving on to main event, five styles of smoked Meat from which lean Brisket is most sought-after, it was happily letting others get their fill that more experienced folks zeroed in on the heavily marbled cuts plus finely shredded Pork, moist Turkey Breast and snappy smoked Sausages.

Accompanied by fluffy Rolls, Sauces, Condiments and Cornbread, future orders apparently requiring more of the latter, it was by special request that a Sandwich from Big B’s #secretmenu was also delivered, the Cheesesteak featuring Tri-Tip, Peppers, Onions and melted Provolone hands-down the best tasted locally while Pecan Pie also challenges any in Sin City thanks to plenty of candied Nuts atop a jammy base.

N/A: Making it blog policy to not ‘rate’ places based on catering alone it speaks volumes that staff actually requests Big B’s by name while Pharmaceutical Representatives go out of their way to place orders at other offices as well, the fact that a disastrous delivery from Famous Dave’s is what forced the entire #supportlocal lunch idea making what Natalia and Brian are doing all the more impressive.

RECOMMENDED: Fatty Brisket, Hot Links, Smoked Turkey, Cheesesteak Sandwich, BBQ Baked Beans, Creamed Corn, Cornbread, Pecan Pie.

AVOID: N/A.

TIP: Honestly, there is no better dollar-for-dollar catering value in town and if you want to make Thanksgiving extra easy and delicious why not consider letting Big B’s do the work: www.bigbztexasbbq.com/thanksgiving/

Bowlology (South Hualapai,) Las Vegas NV

Bowlology South Hualapai

Hula Super Bowl – Acai, Peaches, Pineapple, Mango, Banana, Vanilla Almond Mylk, Strawberry, Coconut, Granola, Honey

Berry Good Super Bowl – Acai, Strawberry, Banana, Apple Juice, Blueberry, Honey, Granola

PB Lover Super Bowl – Acai, Strawberry, Banana, Bee Pollen, Peanut Butter, Chocolate Almond Mylk, Almonds, Dark Chocolate Chips, Granola, Honey

As many may find the idea of “Superfoods,” Juice Cleanses and Alkaline Water appealing, the fact that at least two have absolutely no merit besides the point, it was after hearing rave reviews about Bowlology that a stop was made at the South Hualapai location and although the idea is harmless the prices and quality leave much to be desired.

Born out of Southern California and following the eastern migration, a total of nine locations with five in Sin City, Bowlology defines itself as “the science and art of handcrafting healthy and delicious Meals served in a bowl” and staffed by friendly youngsters who surely have at least a Masters in overselling the benefits of Acai most “Super Bowls” begin with a blend of the ingredient plus other Fruits and Juices served beneath toppings.

Additionally offering Poke, Smoothies and Squeezed Juices, the Cold-Press phenomenon apparently not yet part of Bowlology’s Art or Science as they instead sell bottles from Juice Street, it was after perusing some packaged goods and a cleanly space that an order was placed, three Bowls tallying a total of nearly thirty dollars with each made to order in approximately ten minutes.

Opting to partake elsewhere, though fans seem to enjoy lingering with free Wi-Fi and ample electrical outlets, it was first that a spoonful of “Hula” was tasted, the astringent sourness quickly puckering lips but fast to mellow thanks to Almond Milk and shredded Coconut while the “Berry Good” unfortunately lacked anything creamy and actually opted to double down with Apple Juice that made the “Bowl” more drinkable than edible and not particularly “good” at all.

Setting aside more than half of the first two, $10+ lost dollars not particularly pleasant, it was hoping that the dessert-y description of “PB Lover” would help justify the visit and thankfully it did, the fact that Acai was masked by Mylk, Peanut Butter, Dark Chocolate and Almonds a big part of the reason though the thicker texture like that of Oatmeal also helped.

TWO STARS: No stranger to the literature or cost of Acai, but nonetheless skeptical about how both are promoted by Bowlology, the chain seemingly serves best as a go-to for those disinterested in whole Fruits and Vegetables though for those counting calories it may also work as a meal replacement or even Dessert in the case of PB Lover.

RECOMMENDED: PB Lover Super Bowl

AVOID: Berry Good Super Bowl

TIP: Bowlology offers loyalty cards and daily specials for those looking to save a few bucks.

Rarely celebrating milestones on their actual date, a lifetime of delayed gratification thanks to schooling making it obvious that such things are best saved for times when they can be savored, it was for a party of two that reservations were made at Le Cirque on Saturday evening, Chef Alan Mardonovich and General Manager Ivo Angelov once again coordinating a night of pure luxury and elegance.

In reality a dual celebration for a couple at very different career stages, one just starting and another finally at home in Sin City, it was with a Champagne toast over personalized menus that the evening began promptly after seating, a familiar bite of Fish again awakening the palate followed by the arrival of Bread service.

Making a conscious attempt on this visit to abstain from too many Pretzels and slices of warm White Chocolate with Coffee, the ever-attentive servers not making the task easy as empty plates more than once prompted an offer for more, it was while watching the Bellagio Fountains from a cozy corner that course one arrived, Le Cirque’s classic Salad of Avocado and Artichoke Hearts decorated with shaved White Truffles whose fragrance carried nicely atop vibrant Vinaigrette and triangles of Parmesan.

Moving onward to Autumn with Sunchoke Soup, a tableside pour over Egg Yolk and textural elements producing a velvety Potage perfectly suited to freshly shaved Tuber magnatum, it was after slowly savoring each spoonful that silverware was reset in anticipation of Pasta, the Risotto and Tagliatelle of course still available but wiser guests opting for handmade Ravioli filled with roasted Fairytale Pumpkin whose light sweetness is magnified by Brown Butter that again acts as a classic vehicle to the seasonal Truffles from Alba.

Opting here to alter the order of courses, a lightly cooked Langoustine surrounded by Caviar and herbal Butter dazzling through little more than the ingredient quality, it was with a glass of Tokaji poured that Foie Gras’ arrival was announced, Chef Mardonovich’s teaser via Social Media hardly doing the pairing of Liver, Figs and Baking Spices justice as all was tied together beautifully by earthy Beet Gastrique.

Traveling next to New Zealand for what many consider the World’s best Venison, grass-fed and finished Cervena loin cooked rare amidst roasted Chestnuts, it would be difficult to suggest shaved Truffles did not add additional oomph to a complex Sauce made of Port and Dark Chocolate, though one can safely assume the dish is also fantastic un-supplemented while a follow-up palate cleanser tied nicely into the flavors preceding it.

Finishing up in classic Le Cirque fashion, a Double Espresso and Mignardises always worth lingering over, it was as flames slowly burned atop a particularly tall Grand Marnier Soufflé that its counterpart was crowned with Ice Cream, both versions as delicate as they are indulgent and a perfect way to end another memorable meal at Las Vegas’ best Restaurant.

FIVE STARS: Now visit number seventeen, the first over ten years prior still unforgettable in equal parts due to the Food and gracious service, there is a reason so many visitors go out of their way to visit Le Cirque every time they are in town and for those with the means it remains one of Sin City’s true “destination” Restaurants.

RECOMMENDED: White Chocolate-Coffee Bread, Jerusalem Artichoke Veloute, Pumpkin Ravioli, Sauteed Foie Gras, Cervena Vension, Souffle(s).

AVOID: N/A.

TIP: The White Truffle Menu is available as a whole or via individual plates from now through late Decembrer.

Although Desert Shores will likely always be best recognized as the home of Marche Bacchus it was at the end of August that Chef Sonia El-Nawal decided to set up shop nearby, a plethora of domestic and international experience including her recent dedication to Organic Granola yielding Rooster Boy Café in Suite 113 of 2620 Regatta Drive.

Established as a seven-day Breakfast and Lunch space but recently going dark on Mondays, the Summerlin community on Lake Jacqueline a notoriously tough sell, it was Saturday around 11:20am that six guests arrived to find Chef El-Nawal and her team at approximately 1/4 capacity, the counter-style service not immediately evident but quickly sorted out thanks to instructions on each table.

Offering indoor and al fresco seating, the former communal and outdoors shaded by umbrellas plus foliage, it was after greetings from staff that a menu of Bowls, Plates and Toasts was navigated, the young man at the register clearly green as he hunted and pecked for items before neglecting to provide Pastries from the counter, something only later found to be his duty as the group sat waiting at meal’s end.

Well designed and clearly a work of passion, everything from self-service beverage stations and staff’s matching uniforms creating a rustic atmosphere befitting Sonia’s local-market ingredients, it was after losing the first of two forks through holes in metal tables that three “complimentary” Pastries arrived, a nice gesture though one had actually been paid for with the $4 Scone a highlight thanks to plenty of Butter and tart Cranberries while the Blueberry Muffin unfortunately fell short thanks to a relative lack of Fruit and flavor.

Next finding diners divided on a Chocolate Almond Croissant not listed on Blackboard, the $5 Almond version actually requested arriving an hour later with equally polarizing results thanks to a thick and sticky center, it was turning attention to the menu itself that things improved, a plate titled Mi Corazon referencing El-Nawal’s time in Mexico by way of housemade Tortillas topped in Chicken, Avocado and Onions plus smoky Red Salsa.

Turning next to oft-praised Pancakes, the already-fallen Dutch Oven smaller than expected and fairly bland save for plump Berries, it was instead a dish titled “The Natural” which proved a highlight thanks to its finely ground Flour and nutty sponge which readily sopped up both Butter and pure Maple Syrup.

Not about to leave Rooster Boy Café without tasting the eponymous Granola, a wide-ranging blend of Nuts and Seeds well-matched to tangy Yogurt plus $2 of supplemental Berries, it was passing on the Lebanese “From Back Home” that Sonia’s time in France instead took center-stage, a rustic Galette rich with Onions and sweetened by Figs enjoyed equally by Children and Senior Citizens while a late-arriving $5 Lemon Square was questionable in terms of value but delicious just as well.

THREE STARS: Always happy to see a local Chef try something new, particularly in chain-heavy Summerlin, Rooster Boy Café shows plenty of potential to be great, but between service errors, Strip-priced Pastries and a few items that simply aren’t on par with other Breakfast spots it seems to still need more time before being worth going out of one’s way for.

RECOMMENDED: Lemon Square, The Natural, Prosciutto and Fig Galette.

AVOID: Blueberry Muffin, Dutch Oven, Almond Croissant “Filling” which is thankfully not sweet like Frangipane but far too thick and over-applied.

TIP: Open 7:30a-3:00p Tuesday through Sunday with menu updates coming soon per Chef El-Nawal.

Having never eaten a mediocre bite across sixteen visits to CRAFTkitchen it was once again on Friday that Jaret Blinn’s Restaurant was called upon for catering, their fourth #supportlocal lunch again arriving on-time with everything as it is supposed to be including serviceware, plates, napkins and several wrapped trays.

Delivered by Mrs. Blinn, the mom n’ pop aspect of CRAFTkitchen sometimes overlooked given the sleek décor and menu of items that look anything but routine, it was as attendees filtered in that one particularly picky co-worker proclaimed her excitement about Jaret’s Pop Tarts, the sized-down Pastries this time filled with Strawberries reduced with Balsamic and perhaps his best ever in terms of complexity.

Happy to see elegant Chicken Salad Profiteroles again gracing the table, Pate a Choux standing up well to a creamy blend of Protein, Vegetables and Herbs, it was after bites of Coleslaw brightened by Golden Raisins that small Sandwiches took center stage, the “Turkey Gobbler” one-upping Capriotti’s thanks to housemade Oatmeal Bread and brined Breast Meat plus a rich Stuffing Patty while Lobster Rolls on soft Buns danced with Dill that seemed a bit heavy-handed at first, but mellowed with a squeeze of Lemon.

Again requesting the Caesar unassembled, though most opted to enjoy it with all the included accoutrements, it was saving room for Dessert that decisions were made between Cookies, Pumpkin Pie and Hazelnut Bars, each delicious in their own way but the season expectedly seeing two-bite Tarts gone first though the rich bites of Nuts and Chocolate flecked with gold followed close behind.

N/A: Making it blog policy to not ‘rate’ places based on catering alone CRAFTkitchen has always gone the extra mile to assure off-site dining is every bit as delicious as inside the Restaurant on South Eastern, and having recently celebrated three years serving guests the Chef and his team have yet to show any signs of slowing in terms of creativity or passion.

Never really gathering much steam out the gate, a strategy of #influencer tagging clearly only beneficial to businesses willing to pay one of them to run social media and invite all their pals, it was for dinner on Thursday that an order was placed at Gama Bakery & Cakes and much like the first time most items received set a high standard for Las Vegas.

Celebrating six months since opening at 4750 West Sahara Avenue Suite 27, a visit on Cinco de Mayo previously finding the place not yet up to speed but already offering Sin City’s best Concha, it was in celebration of Dia de los Muertos that Gama was found offering full Loaves of Pan de Muerto, the added bonus of giving them away free with any dozen Pan Dulce an added bonus for those visiting on either November first or second.

Apparently losing their website since opening, Instagram also slowing substantially after a protracted opening, it was first from four $1.99 Tamales that tastes were taken, the Masa questionably handmade but of a good consistency particularly in the case of shredded Pork and vibrant Red Sauce plus the traditional Sweet Corn selection though the Chicken unfortunately came out both overwhelmed by Salsa and exceedingly dry.

Moving next to sweeter selections, a mere $8.50 yielding twelve Pan Dulce selected by staff, highlights once again included the Concha this time surrounded by an un-sugared rim and Nino Envuelto while Blueberry-Cream Cheese Bread also emerged as a new favorite, though unfortunately no lessons seem to have been learned as relates to the Besos with a texture that seems at least two days old in comparison to the marvelous one tasted at Lulu’s Bakery just last week.

Happy to see both a Coconut-Cream Cheese Pastry and dense Bread Pudding also well-worth ordering, though Gama’s $4.50 Tres Leches is severely compromised by too much Fruit and granular Buttercream Frosting a la Smith’s or Albertson’s, it was finally at the end that fluffy Pan de Muerto was split by hand and tasted, the fragrance of Anise and Citrus prominent but not overwhelming amidst a fluffy crumb that is sweet enough to be classified as Pan Dulce but at the same time restrained enough to also serve as a table Bread with Dinner.

THREE STARS: Priced competitively to La Bonita and most of the Valley’s Panaderia Gama Bakery & Cakes continues to show well with raised Breads while Tamales are also good quality, though the fact that the place is mostly hidden from view and still serving some exceedingly mediocre items makes one wonder just how long they’ll last considering the slim margins and sizable space.

RECOMMENDED: Pork Red Salsa Tamale, Sweet Corn Tamale, Pan de Muerto, Concha Bordeado, Rollo De Coco con Queso Crema, Pudín de Pan.

AVOID: Besos de Frambuesa y Coco, Tres Leches Fruta, Chicken Green Salsa Tamale.

Working in a predominantly Hispanic office Tacos always go over well, but with most mom n’ pop spots unable (or unwilling) to cater and Mi Gusta merely average it was to Pink Taco at The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino that #supportlocal lunch turned on Thursday, Chef Bradley Manchester and his team arriving thirty minutes early to assemble a feast for twenty-five that exuded both quality and professionalism.

Perhaps not a traditional pick for off-site catering, the Los Angeles import now far outpacing its original location both in terms of earnings and volume, it was with the same $20 per guest budget previously afforded to Border Grill that two Chefs made several trips up elevators and down stairs before beginning to assemble some nine items, everything brought in Chafing dishes collected by another Pink Taco employee later.

Guaranteeing an unprecedented level of freshness by dressing Salads, garnishing Tacos and saucing Enchiladas on-site, a jumbo-stack of Tamales finding favor amongst all whether doused in Poblano Cream or not, it was quite surprising that even those prone to more modest flavors enjoyed both crispy Flautas stuffed with Chicken and the Resturant’s signature dish, the bright color amusing a speaker out of Oregon who was thrilled to have a good audience throughout his entire presentation.

Pleasing lighter lunchers with wedges of Romaine topped in Bacon balanced by pickled Onions and Cheese, though several opted to add Carne Asada and roasted Poblanos intended for Street Tacos to this or housemade Corn Chips, it was unfortunately Chicken Sandwiches with too much Bread that were forgotten in favor of better choices, the Enchiladas going over well with those who enjoy a bit of heat though their best selling point was actually a thick Mole that doubled down on smoked Mushrooms to yield ample earthiness.

Finishing up with Dessert, Hard Rock Pastry Chef Mickey Harden veering off-menu for two special treats, suffice it to say that the only “flaw” in thick Rice Pudding with Vanilla and Cinnamon was that a bigger bowl would have made over-consumption less obvious while the thick Flan de Queso topped like a Pina Colada was worth every calorie and potential embarrassment suffered from eating several slices.

N/A: Making it blog policy to not ‘rate’ places based on catering alone the team from Pink Taco set a new standard of excellence on Thursday, every moment from arrival and on-site assembly to collecting their own serving dishes the following day an absolute class-act from start to finish and undoubtedly the most universally praised #supportlocal lunch to date.

RECOMMENDED: PINK TACOS, MOLE & SMOKED MUSHROOM ENCHILADA, RAJAS TAMALES, FLAN CHEESECAKE.

AVOID: CHICKEN MILANESA TORTA tasted fine, but the Bread to Meat ratio was skewed too far left.

Having already written of Bronze Café at The Market Catering twice and happy to recommend their downtown Restaurant to anyone seeking a great Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner it was again by David Mozes that delivery occurred on Wednesday, the assumption that most would get their share of processed sugar at various Halloween gatherings making a healthy #supportlocal afternoon all the more relevant, though that certainly did not mean passing up on Pastries.

Now surviving two years inside Tony Hsieh’s misguided “Market,” ongoing renovations doing nothing to lessen the ingredient quality or Chef Peter Bastien’s ability to create delicious Food that remains mindful of dietary preferences including Gluten Free and Vegan, it was largely in Sammiches previously enjoyed that $15 per attendee was invested, the LGBTQ always a favorite while Miss Piggy proves that Bacon makes almost anything better by placing crispy strips atop the already outstanding Green Goddess Chicken Salad.

Opting to try Bronze Café’s Hummus for the first time on this occasion, the aluminum foil swans full of Pita a cute touch while pureed Chickpeas sing thanks to the aromatics of Cumin and smoky Paprika, it was much to the delight of many that the Thai Peanut Salad was once again ordered while others quickly dove into the daily Vegan Cheesecake this time made with Oreo Cookies and an Agave-sweetened Crust of Nuts and Seeds.

Getting creative with EZCater to make some additional requests, only a fraction of Peter’s Cookies offered via the platform, it was here too that tastes were entrusted to old favorites, a special request for Bronze Café’s Carrot Cake seeing all four squares quickly gone with many calling them the “best ever” while Cinnamon Chocolate Monkey Bread that takes well to microwaving was also popular, though still not as downright delicious as The Peanut Butter-Snickerdoodle Cookie which somehow seemed even better this time thanks to more chopped nuts amidst the Cinnamon-Sugar dusted Batter.

N/A: Making it blog policy to not ‘rate’ places based on catering alone Bronze Café at The Market nonetheless deserves top marks for always coming up big with their Organic Greens and Sammiches plus great Hummus and Desserts any savvy diner gladly take over candy 365-days a year.

RECOMMENDED: The LGBTQ Sammich, The Miss Piggy Sammich, The Hummus, The Peanut Butter Snickerdoodle, The Carrot Cake, The Thai Peanut Noodle Salad, The Hummus, The Strawberry Cookie, The Pumpkin Spice Cookie, The Bacon Jam Scone.

AVOID: Be aware The Carrot Cake is not always available, though it should be and can be with advance notice.

TIP: Located inside The Market at 611 Fremont Street from 7:30a till 11p daily and 24-hr Saturday through to Sunday Night. Catering available via several sites including EZCater, Grubhub and Delivery.com.

Like many culinary “trends” it took just one local success story to start the proliferation of hand-made Noodle houses in Las Vegas, The Noodle Man’s 2015 debut on South Rainbow since giving the Valley Shang, Mian and The Magic Noodle on Fort Apache where five guests sat down to Dinner this past Saturday.

Located in the busy strip-mall across from Wal-Mart near Tropicana, a center also home to Sweet Addiction, Squeeze-In and ACE Donuts, it was just past 6:15pm that the small space was found packed full with persons mostly of Asian ancestry, many satisfied faces visible and conversation kept low as eyes focused on a team of five visible through glass spinning or cutting Noodles, pouring Broth or wok-firing Vegetables.

Pleasantly decorated and family friendly, a trio of servers featuring one man and two women seating guests from a list hung near the door, it is immediately as one party departs that tables are bussed with the next seated, a double-sided laminated menu proving easy to navigate and yielding one Appetizer plus four sizable plates or bowls that all arrived simultaneously just fifteen minutes later.

Dining mostly with novices to this style of Food, a Midwestern upbringing further gifting three with a low tolerance for heat, it was beginning with six segments of crispy Dough flecked by Green Onion that Dinner was underway, each greaseless bite richly flavored and nice for transitioning between various Noodles though the Pancakes are additionally offered with Eggs or Pork that other tables seemed to be enjoying like Tacos.

Moving next to the Restaurant’s eponymous item, all four selections served with “Original” hand-pulled Noodles instead of flat or knife-cut versions as a result of guests not realizing the various choices were available until later, it was almost exactly one week after another disappointing Chicken-based Pho that The Magic Noodle’s Chicken Soup fared much better, the umami-rich Broth studded with at least three types of Mushrooms leaving behind just a touch of grease on the lips and no two bites the same thanks to a plenty of Meat and Vegetables.

Continuing with Chicken as the protein of choice for Chow Mein, a lot of Bean Sprouts and Cabbage plus reduced Soy adding complexity to springy Starch, it was veering spicy that classic Dan Dan Noodles left lips temporarily numb, a surfeit of Ground Pork and Peanuts welcomed to counter Sichuan Peppers and Chili Oil while Beef Brisket Soup was rich with surprisingly tender Meat but a bit too much Cilantro and a peculiar lingering sweetness.

FOUR STARS: Offering great value on the Dollar, four adults plus a child all sated for just $57 including tax and tip, it seems as though The Magic Noodle has found its stride less than one year after opening and with good Food plus service better than most of Spring Mountain Road additional visits to try more of the menu will surely follow.

RECOMMENDED: Green Onion Pancakes, Chicken Soup Noodles, Dan Dan Noodles.

AVOID: Beef Brisket Soup Noodles were fine, but could have been better with less Cilantro and sweetness.

TIP: 11a-10p Monday through Saturday and closed at 9:30 Sunday.

Although many small business owners dislike Yelp! the fact remains that there is no more powerful search engine for Restaurants and on Saturday it was by accident that Lulu’s Bakery was discovered via the App, a quick drive down Jones finding the small space selling Chicharrones and made-to-order Tacos plus a limited collection of Cakes and Pan Dulce.

Family owned and operated with a promise that everything including Carne Asada Fries are scratch-made on site, the clerk a pleasant gentleman who explained that Cakes including Tres Leches require pre-order, it was turning attention to several racks that six Breads were selected for $3.90, their consumption undertaken elsewhere though Lulu’s does offer limited seating for those who wish to dine in.

Certainly not as wide-ranging as Vegas Bakery, Cake World or Gama, though still covering the classics plus a few novelties, it was beginning with a Sprinkle Cookie that Lulu’s base was found to be softer and less granular than the competition while a follow-up length of Bread streaked Pink like Nino Envuelto fell short of expectations as a result of eating more like Biscotti than Cake.

Continuing with Fruit, the “YoYo” or Besos reference standard thanks to plenty of Jelly and shredded Coconut surrounding both sides, it was in further evidence of Lulu’s quality that two styles of Concha including one shaped like a turtle were soft and fluffy beneath crumbly Sugar while a Scone-like lump topped in Dark Chocolate also stood out thanks to plenty of Butter and a hint of Cinnamon.

THREE STARS: A bit too limited to compete head-to-head with other Mexican Bakeries Lulu’s still does a good job with what they sell and represent a worthwhile stop for those who live nearby or frequent the area.

RECOMMENDED: Besos, Tortuga Concha, Polvorone.

AVOID: Raspberry Biscotti-like Cookie.

Always keen to try new places, but fully aware that the best remain such through dedication and innovation, it was once again after a twenty minute drive north that seats were taken inside Metro Pizza on Sky Pointe, Pizzaiolos John Arena and Chris Decker up early to debut a new style of Pie on the menu of attached Lulu’s Bread and Breakfast where several little leaguers already sat eating Sandwiches, Bennies and French Toast.

Still the top spot in Centennial for Breakfast but also one of the Sin City’s best Bakeries, a concise Menu paying dividends by making sure that every Pastry and Plate lives up to ownership’s high standards, it was with greetings from the same voice as five years prior that guests were greeted, a “What can I getcha, doll?” followed by Lulu’s flawless Cheese Danish plus an airy Croissant filled nearly edge-to-edge with Cream.

Moving next to the Kitchen at Metro, John’s encyclopedic knowledge of Pizza and willingness to teach never taken for granted, it was side-by-side with Chris that the two moved proofed Dough from bins to board before light stretching, the product subsequently baked at slightly higher than usual temperatures to yield a crackling bottom beneath springy inches subsequently topped in Autumn’s bounty.

Dubbed “Roman Pizza” and sold warm at Lulu’s for $4 a slice, the combination of autolysed Flour, Olive Oil and time offered in limited quantities with toppings prone to weekly change, diners present on this day were offered the choice between Metro’s Marinara and Fresh Mozz or Squash, Kale, Peppers, Apples and Goat Cheese, the addition of a fried Egg helping flavors meld and enough on its own to leave many with a full belly.

Sated at this point but always happy to see what else John and Chris are up to, College Football displayed across several new televisions providing entertainment as Metro set-up for a large party, it was by request that “The 718” Calzone arrived in all its lightly fried glory, creamy Ricotta pouring forth with bits Ham ready to be topped in Red Sauce while Decker’s weekly inspiration borrowed from Al Pastor Tacos to prove that in the right context Pineapple can “belong” on Pizza.

Rounding out the morning with Cannolis, a robust pair of housemade Shells standing up nicely to seasonal Gelato and toppings, it was with self-serve Coffee refilled that guests departed as full of new knowledge as they were of great Food, two actually returning the following day for a Captain America Sandwich and French Toast with many more visits likely to follow.

FIVE STARS: First visited as a tourist in 2013, thirty minutes traveled in a rental car leaving the unfamiliar to wonder how a Restaurant could survive so far from Las Vegas Boulevard, the only question that remains today is just how much further Metro Pizza and Lulu’s Bread & Breakfast can push the envelope while at the same time continuing to offer the same great quality longtime fans have come to expect.

RECOMMENDED: Seasonal Roman Pizza, Cream Cheese Danish, “The 718” Calzone (Metro Menu,) Coconut Gelato (Metro Menu.)

AVOID: N/A.

TIP: Roman Pizza is currently offered on Saturdays only beginning at 10:30am until gone.

Always weary of Celebrity endorsed Restaurants, though perhaps a little less than those of Gordon Ramsay and other globetrotting Chefs, it is after two visits including a star-studded Grand Opening that Big Chicken earns credit for doing things the right way and letting Dr. Shaquille O’Neal be the face while Matt Piekarski and Silverman take care of the cooking.

Newly opened on October 23rd in the plaza also harboring Ferraro’s, a location proximate to The Strip but not actually in a Casino allowing for lower prices than many recent *Big* names, it is immediately upon entry that guests will notice the clean layout ideal for all-ages, a Bar to the right offering Beer, Wine and house Cocktails such as the fizzy Double Dribble while games such as Foosball and Darts fill an alcove to the left.

Offering no shortage of televisions or seating options including tables, booths, tall-boys and bar, the chairs wide and comfy as though Shaq may have selected them himself, a look at Big Chicken’s menu shows a concise collection of options rooted in Organic Cage-Free Birds plus hormone-free Dairy out of California, the willingness to avoid “everything-to-everyone” items a welcome sight in 2018.

Centered on Chicken Sandwiches, a total of six plus Sliders, Salads and Strips joined by “sidekicks,” it was while sipping a Float made from locally made Root Beer that first bites of Shaq Fu BBQ occurred, the addition of housemade Kimchi and Pork Belly plus lightly sweet Sauce still allowing Chicken to show while a Sandwich known as Big Aristotle triple teams with textures crispy, creamy and supple beneath tangy Memphis Barbecue.

Pleased by fluffy Brioche Buns capable of standing up to toppings, the extra thin and crunchy BC Fries also a treat, it was passing on greasy waffled Sweet Potatoes that attention instead turned to Lucille’s Mac n’ Cheese, a blend from Applegate Naturals coating Noodles generously while crushed Cheez-Its offered salt and heterogeneity.

Doubling back to taste Naked Truth’s Chicken unadorned, each Big Chicken Strip nicely brined and fried golden with plenty of Pepper in the mix, a quartet of Sauces showed all to be well composed with the Spicy Chipotle particularly enjoyable and Buffalo Style likely to leave most in need of some Stubborn Soda or one of the Restaurant’s four Milk Shakes.

Charging just $5.49 per Shake, the actual size overflowing a Mason Jar, one would be hard-pressed to decide which was best between the thick Peanut Butter Cup called El Padrino Negro and Oreo-studded Shaq Diesel, but no matter which one is selected the most important thing to do is make sure room is leftover for a $3.99 Ice Cream Sandwich, though here too making a choice between gooey Rocky Road and Grandma’s Banana Pudding is not simple…though probably easier than finishing one of Big Chicken’s Chocolate Chip Cookies that are the diameter of a Basketball.

FOUR STARS: Off to a good start, though a visit after the grand opening indicates that if the Restaurant remains busy they’ll need to find a way to expedite more efficiently, it is great news for fans of fried Chicken that Shaq decided to set up shop here in Las Vegas, the price and quality already far better than Blue Ribbon while ingredients outpace any of the chains by miles.

RECOMMENDED: Double Dribble Cocktail, Big Aristotle, Chicken Strips, BC Fries, El Padrino Negro, Shaq Diesel, Grandma’s Banana Pudding Ice Cream Sandwich, Rocky Road Ice Cream Sandwich.

AVOID: Waffle Fries were a bit greasy, Big Conductor Shake was thin and the Caramel flavor was lacking.

TIP: Open 11a through 2a Sunday through Thursday, until 4am on Fridays and Saturday.
