Gateau Basque (not on the Menu, but a special treat from Chef Harden)

Serving guests at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino for two decades it can safely be stated that Mr. Lucky’s is a Las Vegas icon, and although plans for the space have not yet been announced as Virgin looks to renovate in 2020 the new menu from Chef Chad Castanino offers a level of diversity and craftsmanship that many may not expect from a 24/7 spot just off the gaming floor.

A favorite of concert-goers and the late-night crowd, menus slowly migrating from Breakfast to All-Day and Late Night with trusty American fare bridging all three, it was prior to a show at The Joint that a booth in the Restaurant’s corner was requested, shirts worn by Slash and Guitars signed by The Ramones acting as decoration at arm’s length.

Treated to tunes by Alice in Chains, Foreigner plus Hendrix while dining, and focusing an order on items debuted most recently, it was first by special request that two styles of Pancakes were delivered, the all-day-and-all-night Sweet Cream version soft and fluffy with Vanilla notes while Cookies and Cream Pancakes typically only at Breakfast were rich on their own, and essentially Dessert when slathered with a liberal scoop of Mascarpone.

Shifting savory, an abrupt turn but still in many ways “breakfast,” Chef Castanino’s Warm Spinach Salad comes in the form of housemade Sourdough toasted and topped with Chevre plus Spinach, Onions and Pine Nuts, the Bacon-soaked Dressing adding vibrancy much as tangy Salsa Verde does to the overstuffed Buenos Dias Burrito.

Definitely over-ordering, though housemade Cheese Ravioli in Arrabbiata Sauce comes in a fairly modest portion, those seeking Steak but not wanting to pay MB|Steak prices will likely be pleased with Mr. Lucky’s Strip coated in Peppercorn Sauce, while the handcut Fries cooked crispy are thankfully not overwhelmed by Truffle Oil or Parmesan.

Always ending on a sweet note when Pastry Chef Mickey Harden is involved, his current Cinnamon Roll a laminated masterpiece shellacked in Honey, Caramel and Pecans, French Toast unfortunately seems pretty basic and was served without Mascarpone advertised on the menu, though none of that mattered after tasting Chef Harden’s “Toffee Bar Heaven” Ice Cream Cake that rethinks a Heath Bar in soft layers and continues an unbroken string of hits across all the Hard Rock eateries.

FOUR AND A HALF STARS: Although almost every Las Vegas hotel has a 24/7 spot there is only one Mr. Lucky’s, and although they aren’t going to get nominated for any awards the menu from Chef Chad Castanino is always full of surprises at a fair price. From a Spinach Salad better than many fine dining options to housemade Pasta and some of Sin City’s Best Pancakes, plus desserts by Mickey Harden, if this place doesn’t survive the Virgin rebrand it’ll be sorely missed.

RECOMMENDED: Cookies and Cream Pancakes, Warm Spinach Salad, Steak & Fries, Cinnamon Roll, Toffee Bar Heaven.

AVOID: The French Toast is fairly basic, and was oddly served with Butter rather than Mascarponee as listed on the menu.

TIP: Check out the website for several weekday deals and times during which specific items are typically offered.

From the day Jonathan Pluvinet opened Rosallie on South Rainbow the need to visit Las Vegas Boulevard for great French Pastry vanished, and although competition has sprouted up none are in the same class as what he and former Jean-Philippe maestro Christophe are baking daily.

Truly a tale of skill and determination, ‘Le French Café’ since expanding to Florida, it was early Wednesday morning that Christophe was found overseeing the Restaurant, a pre-order already boxed and ready including many old favorites plus one new item and a custom Birthday Cake.

A west side favorite, and conveniently located en route to the 215, it was ten minutes later that teeth sank into fluffy slices of Brioche slicked in Whipped Cream and Syrup, the Pastries that followed highlighted by Blueberry Bostock, Apple Croustade and an Apricot Danish.

Sharing the bounty, but not before taking a fluffy round topped in Nutella, it was later that three styles of Croissant all impressed with flaky layers, the Cinnamon Roll no less stunning thanks to peerless lamination and restrained sweetness that reminisces of what one might find in Denmark or Sweden.

Keeping the Cake refrigerated until later, its constituents unknown until cutting, suffice it to say that although unadvertised there is no doubt Christophe’s work will make a good impression, in this by way of a soft Vanilla Sponge supporting Berries, Almonds, Pastry Cream and an ornate Chocolate garnish.

FIVE STARS: Invariably a case of the best getting better, from the world-class (yes including France) Almond Croissant to French Toast that rivals Bardot (albeit thinner,) Rosallie remains a cozy respite with the sort of environment, service and Cuisine one simply doesn’t find many places these days.

RECOMMENDED: Almond Croissant, Almond Raspberry Croissant, Brioche French Toast, Blueberry Bostock, Apricot Danish, Cinnamon Roll, Apple Croustade, Palmier.

AVOID: N/A.

Although many rightfully gravitate to Las Vegas Boulevard for all it offers, some argue that Sin City’s most prized possession is its 4ish miles of West Spring Mountain Road entailing Chinatown, and on Saturday evening as a group of nine New Asian BBQ Tan Tung Ky added evidence in support of that claim.

Now a fixture of the stripmall between Lindell and Decatur since June of 2018, and per banners inside the “#10 Chinese Restaurant in America” according to A Bite of America, it is after securing parking in a busy private lot that guests find themselves in a foyer flanked by Pig, Duck and kitchen, the dining area from here expanding right across two sizable rooms.

A sister Restaurant of Asian BBQ & Noodle on Jones, the longtime favorite more than quadrupling its offerings inside a fancier space at 5150 Spring Mountain, it is seated at tables clad in white cloths that diners are invited to explore sixteen pages of items, and for those in the know a two-sided laminate is also available featuring more traditional dishes such as Congee.

Not an easy menu to navigate, though well-translated to English with plenty of pictures steering guests towards house favorites, it is while deciding that complimentary Tea and Water are poured, both refreshed frequently without reminder and first evidence of customer service that far outpaces other nearby eateries.

Eventually choosing ten items, a pre-tip total of approximately $20 per adult seeing everyone well-sated ninety minutes later, it was as items were readied that a steady stream of plates were presented, “House Soup” offered free-of-charge a fairly benign beginning before continuing with chilled Five Spice Beef Shank that eats something like Headcheese slicked in Sugar and Soy.

Visibly the only predominantly Caucasian table at New Asian BBQ on this particular evening, but certainly not sticking to “safe” choices, follow-up plates included both Preserved Egg Porridge and cubes of gently fried Tofu, each big in portion but not in price while Pan Fried Noodles with Beef in Black Bean Sauce offered easily enough to feed two hungry adults for $13.

Continuing with rarely seen Pork Intestine, the expected funkiness unhidden but mellowed by frying, more big flavors followed with Chicken stewed in Ginger Wine with Black Fungus and Fried Rice bolstered by dried Fish and Pork, the former a very developed flavor quite different from anything experienced prior thanks to an aromatic linger and a slight bitterness mid-palate.

Saving signatures carried over from Asian BBQ & Noodle until the end, both Pork and Duck offered in several styles including tableside carving at half the price one will find on The Strip, only Vegetarians or those eschewing Swine for religious purposes should pass up Roasted Pork Belly with shattering Skin, though the Char Siu is also succulent and enough to share for about $9 a pound.

Happy enough with the Duck, though some bits were a bit overcooked and tough, it was in the affirmative that “Do you want House Dessert” was answered, a final parting gift of White Mushrooms with Mango in Syrup far better than it sounds, with the Fungus nearly crystal-clear and texturally like gelatin.

FOUR STARS: Owned by the folks behind Asian BBQ & Noodle on Jones, New Asian BBQ Tan Tung Ky fills a sizable space with extensive options, great service and little extras that outpace much of the nearby competition without an increase in price.

RECOMMENDED: Five Spice Beef Shank, Pan Fried Noodle with Beef in Black Bean Sauce, Porridge with Chicken and Preserved Egg, Stewed Chicken in Ginger Wine Clay Pot, Salted Fish & Chinese Sausage Fried Rice, Roasted Pork Belly with Crispy Skin and Hoisin.

AVOID: Salt & Pepper Crispy Tofu was a little bland and some pieces of Duck were better than others.

TIP: Open from 10am until Midnight daily, Dim Sum from 10am-3pm and Dinner Menu available all day.

Shiraz Restaurant [4,] Las Vegas NV

Shiraz

Chicken Popstick / Fish Pakora / Poha Ka Chat / Samosa / Tamarind Chutney

Butter Naan

Braised Goat Korma / Chicken Tikka Masala / Vegetable Pulao

Creamy Spinach and Chickpeas / Roasted Eggplant in Yogurt Sauce / Chana Dal / Basmati Rice

Besan Barfi

Moong Dal Payasam

Rebranded from Habib’s in July of 2018, Shiraz Restaurant has been slow to gather a following despite Chef Jainine Jaffer’s talents, the lack of a daytime Buffet akin to so many other local Indian eateries likely part of the reason and something owner Raja Majid seemingly hoped to overcome when announcing a weekend AYCE with Bottomless Mimosas thirteen months after opening.

Still a class-act for catering, and amongst the most attractive Off-Strip Restaurants in town as relates to décor, it is beginning at 11am Saturdays and Sundays that an “Indian and Persian Buffet with Bottomless Mimosas” is advertised for $20, though a complete dearth of patrons over the first hour suggests the message has failed to circulate.

Still new, the fact that Chef Jaffer and her team had been catering a week-long event in Washington making this only the Buffet’s second week, it was with no one at the hostess podium that confusion ensued on entry, a lone waiter eventually emerging from the back and presenting “a menu if you want Persian Food, or the Indian Buffet for $20.”

Never once offered a Beverage beyond Water, and opting for the Buffet after brief perusal, it was only after a sous-Chef setting up an Omelet Station suggested it that Naan was delivered fresh from the kitchen, Chef Jainine later taking a short break to describe hers and the staff’s Saturday offerings.

Most certainly different from other Buffets in town, though a lack of Persian options seemed strange considering the advertisement posted on Social Media, it was progressing right to left that Eggs and Salad were passed in favor of more unique offerings, the Chicken “Popstick” moist and flavorful while fried options including Fish Pakora and tiny Samosas competed for attention with a steamed Rice Street Food known as Poha Ka Chat.

Maintaining balanced flavors across the spread, bright aromatics prevailing with light heat found in both the Poha and Daal, plate two consisted of a scoop of Chickpeas atop Basmati Rice plus a bowl of tender Eggplant, the entirely vegetarian round finishing with blended Spinach and Chickpeas that tasted a lot like Saag Paneer but with more heterogeneous consistency.

Also offering Bone-in Goat Korma with a bounty of Cinnamon, and Chicken Tikka Masala that compares favorably to any in town, the Buffet concluded with two Desserts, first Chef Jaffer’s Besan Barfi that eats a lot like Fudge with Gram Flour, Ghee and Nuts standing in for Chocolate followed by two bowls of Vegan Moong Dal Payasam featuring tiny Lentils, Sugar, Coconut and Cardamom.

THREE STARS: Despite Instagramming kitschy quotes about Brunch without Booze being a “sad breakfast,” Shiraz sat empty save for one guest on Saturday from 11am until noon…and he was never once made aware of the Mimosas available, nor did he see a bite of Persian Food…or receive an offer for more Naan when the first four quarters were finished. Sure the Food from Chef Jaffer was enjoyable and not the usual items seen on Indian Buffets, but considering a price $8-10 more than other places putting out a larger spread one wonders how exactly Shiraz is to gain a foothold in such a competitive market.

RECOMMENDED: Chicken Popstick, Samosas, Tamarind Chutney, Chicken Tikka Masala, Moong Dal Payasam.

AVOID: The Food was fine, but a lack of informed service, limited options and $25 tab with tax & tip make this Buffet a debatable value unless drinking.

TIP: See Shiraz’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ShirazLasVegas for an upcoming list of events as the Buffet was cancelled on 10/12-10/13. For catering, Email the Restaurant directly or take a look at EZCater for added convenience.

Having enjoyed David Mozes’ and Chef Peter Bastien’s Bronze Café at The Center, The Market and Juice Stars, it was to #supportlocal that lunch was catered from their North Buffalo location on Thursday, a collection of old favorites predictably arriving on time with plenty of plates and utensils that allowed staff to enjoy every second of their lunch hour.

Located near Desert Shores in Summerlin, the former home of Beau Monde Bakery providing turnkey access for a Restaurant eventually intended to offer Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, it is focused on health-conscious and diet-friendly fare that many guests began with Soup or Salad, Tomato Basil tasting a lot like Margherita Pizza without the Crust while “David’s Special” remains a workplace favorite thanks to Quinoa, Garbanzos, Hemp and Avocado that compliment thinly sliced Kale’s.

Continuing Organic, Vegan and Gluten-free with Sweet Potatoes and Caramelized Onions plus Jeweled Quinoa, the latter pleasantly spiced and lightly sweetened by Raisins, it was in “Sammiches” that appetites were invested further, California Turkey expectedly gone first but quickly followed by The LGBTQ and Green Goddess Chicken which each eat cleaner than their traditional versions thanks to better Ingredients served in proper rations on fluffy Ciabatta.

Not about to skip entirely Vegan Desserts, The Peanut Butter Snickerdoodle still Las Vegas’ best Cookie despite mounting competition, those missing Beau Monde’s gluten-free offerings will be happy to know both the Banana Flax Cake and all-new Carrot Cake are made without any Wheat protein, and although the Banana Bread is far more moist than memory serves it still cannot hold a candle to shredded Carrots, Pineapple and plenty of Baking Spices beneath slick Icing and toasted Coconut.

Continuing strong with Bronze Café’s cleverly titled Loving v Virginia, a Brookie that has only gotten better over time, the all-new Chocolate Almond Cookie would probably benefit from a bit more moisture, though the same cannot be said for Pumpkin Spice, Chai or Strawberry which are all soft, chewy and almost Cake-like.

N/A: Making it blog policy to not ‘rate’ places based on catering alone, no matter where Chef Peter and David are set-up the quality has never declined, lunch on Thursday continuing to show quality and creativity bound to please those with and without dietary restrictions, whether they want to be gluttonous or eat light.

RECOMMENDED: The David’s Special Salad, The LGBTQ Sammich, The Green Goddess Chicken Salad Sammich, The Peanut Butter Snickerdoodle, The Pumpkin Spice Cookie, The Loving v Virginia, The Carrot Cake.

AVOID: The Chocolate Almond Cookie was pretty dry.

Imported from Los Angeles, and joining Factory Kitchen at The Venetian Hotel & Casino, sixth + mill ristorante sees Chef and Restaurateur Angelo Auriana focus on childhood memories overlooking St. Mark’s Square.

Described as “the new neighborhood pizzeria,” but in reality a Bib Gourmand award recipient from the Michelin Guide in California, the Restaurant focuses on dishes from the south of Italy executed locally by Factory Kitchen’s Eduardo Pérez, and much like the space in Restaurant Row a spotlight is shined great Ingredients presented simply.

Part of The Grand Canal Shoppes, a replacement for Otto not far from The Canals, diners will find excellent service from the moment they approach sixth + mill’s podium, and even though staff is young they all seem well trained and fluent in describing imported Ingredients including DOP Cheeses as well as culinary techniques used behind the scenes.

Pairing Food with a Beer, Wine and Cocktail list from Sommelier Francine Diamond-Ferdinandi, many will start with Fritters or Appetizers, and for meat eaters and vegetarians alike the U’vroccolo with Cauliflower intended to be dipped in Parmigiano sauce should not be missed.

Approachable but never boring, Pastas also warrant a look whether focused on Durum Wheat or Egg Noodles, plentiful portions offering enough to share found in feather-light Gnocchi with vibrant Tomato sauce, as well as baked-to-order Pasta al Forno with unctuous Meat Sauce and Bechamel.

Using custom-built ovens from Saputo Biscotto straight from Italy, Pizzas are sixth + mill’s “raison d’être” no matter whether one prefers White or Red, and with leopard spotted Crusts cooked in ninety seconds Auriana’s Dough is the result of science and passion, his own Yeast starter helping 00 Flour cook up light with just the right amount of char and chew whether as a classic Margherita or the “Vince” featuring creamy Burrata, imported Mortadella and a Citrus twist.

Also seeking to please with plates including Chicken Parm, Sausage and Mussels, no meal sixth + mill should end without Dessert from Pastry Chef Jorge Luque, the Zeppoline a touch underwhelming while a Rum-soaked “O’baba” carries French roots south via Oranges and Custard to compete for top billing with “Torta della Nonna” that rethinks Cheesecake atop a buttery Cookie Crust.

FOUR AND A HALF STARS: Led by The Factory Kitchen’s Eduardo Pérez and Pastry Chef Jorge Luque, sixth+mill ristorante sees Chef and Restaurateur Chef Angelo Auriana focus on Italian favorites across share plates, Pastas and the city’s best Neapolitan Pizzas at a fair price considering the location.

RECOMMENDED: U’vroccolo, Pasta al Forno, Vince Pizza, O’baba, Lemon Ricotta Torta della Nonna.

AVOID: Timing ones arrival is tricky, because while the St. Mark’s Square street performers can be fun the opera gets quite loud and annoying as it drones on at short distance.

TIP: Open from 11 am to 11 pm daily.

Now a part of the local dining scene for over a year, early accolades from longtime friends forgotten for the next *big* thing from one of Las Vegas’ “cool” Chefs, September 2019 sees bBd’s taking a new approach that focuses on Casino guests without sacrificing any of the craftsmanship or quality that made the Restaurant stand out from the start.

Predictably taking time to find an audience inside Palace Station, Football season now sees bBd’s open at 11am on weekends, and between Gridiron Specials, a Kid’s Menu and Ralph Perrazzo’s on-site butchering program the only real questions are *how much* to order and “why is this place not busier?”

An acronym for Beers, Burgers and Desserts, all three available in several forms alongside a multitude of options ranging from Appetizers to Steaks cut-to-share, it is seated at hefty tables amidst televisions showing a half-dozen games that guests will find themselves on Saturdays and Sundays, service led by Mike Amidei professional but friendly in a way that would warrant praise even if the Food cost twice as much.

Still playing Rock music overhead during early hours, though play-by-play is offered during Monday Night Football and all 82+ Las Vegas Knights games, it was after perusing several 11a-4p specials that an order was arranged, $6 each for a half-dozen juicy Wings, spicy Cheese Sticks and housemade “Dinosaur Nuggets” with fried Mashed Potato smiles a bonafide bargain while Perrazzo’s similarly priced Falafel may be the best in town in terms of texture as well as taste.

Unfortunately 86ing an enormous Bavarian Pretzel due to slow sales, but keeping the Hefeweizen Beer Cheese as a Dip for crispy Crinkle Cut Fries made with an original Coney Island press, one would be challenged to name better Fries for $5 in Las Vegas than those at bBd’s, though the “Garbage” version featuring Hot Sauce, Ground Beef, Bacon, Cheddar Cheese, Pickles, Onions and a Fried Egg makes a compelling argument to go “all-in” for just three more bucks.

Sampling a few Beers and Ciders along the way, and making sure not to miss bBd’s Milkshakes that focus on housemade Soft-serve plus craft Accoutrements instead of store-bought Candy like those at Black Tap and Sugar Factory, it was by request that two types of Pastrami were served separated from their Bun, each entirely unique but tender and well-seasoned while Chef Perrazzo’s Sloppy Joe built from housemade Prime Beef “Steak-Emms” is a must-order for $10, but even better at $7 during Happy Hour.

Smartly adding a $7 Cheesesteak, and skipping Whiz in favor of Provolone because quality Beef needn’t be covered up by Kraft, there is nowhere else in Las Vegas that a sharable Sandwich costs so little while value-shoppers will also want to take a look at bBd’s 22oz 60-Day Dry-Aged New York Strip with complimentary Horseradish Mashed Potatoes and Creamed Spinach for just $49.

Stuffed, and with a bag full of leftovers, it was after a few more bites of beautifully grilled Beef that lunch ended on a sweet note, the Cinnabomb literally leaking Butter when pierced with a fork and all the better for it while three “Boozy Shakes” made deciding which is best a perilous task for those with low alcohol tolerance as all are incredibly smooth, right down to the bottom.

FIVE STARS: Rare to call any place “World Class” after a single visit the fact of the matter is that there is no one out there taking on Pub Grub and executing it as well as b.B.d’s, the effort of Chef Perazzo and his team evident in everything from Ingredient sourcing to design while the Food and Beverage both live up to promises of “Craftsmanship you can taste.” <– Still true after a second look, and now an even greater value.

RECOMMENDED: Falafel Balls, Garbage Fries, Spicy Steak-Emm Sloppy Joe, Prime Beef Philly Cheesesteak, 22oz 60-Day Dry-Aged New York Strip, Drumstick Shake, Strawberry Shake, Oatmeal Cookie Boozy Shake, Gooey Warm Cinnabomb

AVOID: For those who don’t love Horseradish the Mashed Potatoes are a no-go, also keep in mind that thus far music plays instead of play-by-play during 11a-4p Gridiron Specials.

Opened in late May as James Trees’ follow-up to Esther’s Kitchen, it was Thursday afternoon that Ada’s Chef de Cuisine Dylan Jobsz and assistant Becca Rose Alford arrived early for setup, a situation not unlike previous #supportlocal lunches where everything from actual plates and silverware was included at a very fair price for such impressive Food and service.

Porting Pizza boxes suggesting “You Deserve The Best,” a meal at Ada’s Restaurant in the middle of June showing their Cuisine equally innovative and well crafted as Esther’s, it was immediately at 11:30am that the finishing touches were added to Salad’s and Pastas, staff filing in with looks of surprise while the speaker marveled that she had “never seen a spread like this.”

Slowly gathering steam at Tivoli Village, a look at the menu already revealing esoteric items like Salt Cod replaced by Peaches and Prosciutto, it was beginning with this seasonal Pie that taste buds were tantalized, the “Market Salad” featuring Fruit amidst crisp Greens also very nice with a creamy-crunchy contrast added by Nuts and Ricotta.

Specifically requesting a few items for guests with dietary restrictions, Caesar-esque Gem Salad brightened by a touch of Chili Oil going over well while Ada’s Veggie Pie unfortunately traveled poorly and was beset with moisture, it was with most slices of Margherita gone that diners marveled at Ada’s take on Polenta, the house-ground Cornmeal extra creamy and good on its own, but better mixed with fried Brussels Sprouts slicked by Vinegar and Sugar.

Never forgetting the Meatballs, twenty-five Orbs cooked slowly in Tomato Sauce gone by day’s end, it was with plenty of Dylan’s Housemade Sourdough that Sauce was sopped up, first the Sugo and then anything remaining from the Short Rib Rigatoni.

Saving room for an extra scoop of Radiatorre, still Ada’s or Esther’s most surprising Pasta given its subtlety despite such potent ingredients, it was as a result of others counting calories that one of each Cookie was tasted, the Caramel Pretzel still best thanks to a housemade square of Butter, Cream and Sugar melted across the top, though not far behind are those comprised of Oatmeal and Dried Fruits, Peanut Butter or Dark Chocolate and Marshmallow.

N/A: Making it blog policy to not ‘rate’ places based on catering alone, both Esther’s Kitchen and now Ada’s live by the phrase “Whatever you do, Be the best!” and in terms of customer service as well as quality of cuisine served off-site one would be challenged to name anyone doing it better in Las Vegas.

RECOMMENDED: Peach & Prosciutto Pie, Polenta, Polpette, Radiatorre, Caramel Pretzel Cookie, Oatmeal Cookie, Peanut Butter Cookie.

AVOID: Many have said Pizza changes as soon as it goes in a box, and in the case of Ada’s Veggie Pie it is recommended to try it at the Restaurant in Tivoli Village instead of off-site.

TIP: Open 11a to 11p daily with most convenient access to Suite 120 offered by underground parking and the second escalator/elevator from the Rampart entrance. Reservations offered from 4:00pm to 10:30pm via Opentable. Click the website link for Catering options.

Although there are 60+ PT’s Tavern locations in Nevada only one welcomes children, and that same location at 10940 South Eastern Avenue also plays host to Christopher and Michael Palmeri’s Naked City Pizza Shop.

A joint venture now one year old, and the brother’s second foray into Henderson after finding success across multiple locations in Las Vegas since 2009, it is a more recent development that a wall was installed to eliminate smoke and allow for family-friendly dining, this fact not yet widely known which is likely why things were fairly quiet on a Saturday evening at 6:30pm.

Dimly lit but well-polished, several televisions with audible play-by-play showing the Golden Knights as well as Notre Dame versus Georgia, it was after greetings from a friendly server that menus were perused, a concise collection of Naked City favorites joined by a handful of location-specific specials.

Comfortable for conversation without shouting, the PT’s half louder but entirely ignorable save for when guests enter or exit shared doors, it was not long before Appetizers began arriving, Buffalo Cauliflower named such due to fiery Sauce rather than the Palmeri’s hometown and Steak n Cheese “Egg Rolls” a fun riff on Philly for those who are seeking something different from Naked City’s famous Pizza Logs.

Happy to see Fries on the Menu, something not offered at the DTLV location inside The El Cortez, handcut Wedges cook up crisp whether “plain” or “loaded,” while the “suicide” version featured on DDD’s is also available for those who dare.

Not forgetting Pizzas, the famous Guinea and Rebel Pies both offered in addition to the ability to build one’s own, it was in two-halves that $25.95 “1/2 Sheet” overfed five diners, the Back Home Half fairly traditional save for Sauce and Cheese being mixed while “Buffalo 22” adds the sweet heat of Mike’s Hot Honey to a thick golden Crust, two types of Meat and White Sauce.

Finishing with a big bag of Zeppoles, exactly as they should be with bits of Pizza Dough lightly fried and covered in Confectioner’s Sugar, it is a tough decision between Chocolate and Mango as to which Dip is best, though considering the enormous portion size for just $5 there are plenty of opportunities to figure it out.

FOUR AND A HALF STARS: Something of a hidden secret, and definitely a place that could benefit from a bit of marketing, Naked City Pizza Shop inside the PT’s on Eastern earns high marks for not only slinging good Pizza and Bar Food, but welcoming the whole family with great service and plenty of televisions to watch the game.

RECOMMENDED: Steak n Cheese Egg Rolls, Loaded Fries, Buffalo 22 Pie, Back Home Pie, Zeppoles.

AVOID: N/A, though do pay attention to online menus as each Naked City location is a little different.

TIP: 11a-10p Sunday through Thursday and until Midnight Friday and Saturday, if the Golden Knights are playing expect them with full sound, and same for the Buffalo Bills.

BLVD & MAIN Taphouse [2,] Las Vegas NV

BLVD & Main Taphouse

Pot Roast & Cheddar Pocket – Stout-Braised Short Rib, Cheddar Cheese, Foccacia, Pilsner Beer Cheese Dipping Sauce

Shorty Pizza – Short Rib, Truffle Gouda, Caramelized Onions, Arugula, Lemon Zest, Black Porter Ale, Balsamic Reduction, White Sauce

Breakfast Burrito – Colby Jack Cheese, Tater Tots, Pico de Gallo, Avocado, Bacon, Eggs, Sour Cream

French Toast – Sourdough Bread, Buttermilk Batter, Bourbon Fosters, Almonds, Maple Whipped Cream, Bacon

S’mores Cake – Flourless Chocolate Molten Cake, Toasted Meringue, Housemade Graham Cracker, Chocolate Biscotti

Toffee Cake – Butter Toffee, Crème Fraiche Ice Cream, Buttered Rum-Toffee Sauce

Now open six months, the menu undergoing subtle changes that include renamings and larger Pizzas, it was just past 11am that BLVD & MAIN stood empty on Saturday, the fact that “Breakfast Football Specials” start at 9am unadvertised save for tiny centerpieces on each table.

Built as a Beer Hall and Sports Bar, at least 200 seats directly adjacent The STRAT Sportsbook providing built-in foot traffic, it was upon entry that a smiling hostess led guests to seats, a lone server seen near the bar where an actual “bartender” was nowhere to be found until well after noon.

Showing a multitude of NCAA Football matchups across several big screens, the image quality suggesting no expense spared even though game volume could be heard over the bumping bass of Taylor Swift and Post Malone, it was after brief perusal of the menu that four items were requested, Pot Roast & Cheddar Pockets formerly dubbed “Bierocks” enjoyable but lacking the visual appeal and Dutch Crunch finish seen in March.

Next taking a look at Pizza, small rectangles replaced by $19-24 sixteen-inch rounds, BLVD & Main’s Crust continues to set a high standard for such a venue thanks to crispy pliability, the removal of Horseradish from their “Shorty” making it more accessible and the mix of toppings offering a nice balance of sweet, savory, bitter and tangy.

Likely one of the first customers to taste some of the poorly advertised Football specials, apparently offered from 9am till noon on weekends even though the website still reports an 11 o’clock opening five weeks into the season, Chef Johannes Bernau continues to outpace his space with both the Breakfast Burrito and French Toast, the Tots inside the former particularly enjoyable while sweet Maple Cream and Caramelized Bananas get reined in nicely atop the Bread by bits of Bacon.

Wrapping with two of four Desserts, the recurrent misspelling of “Tofee” on tabletop menus yet another indication of overlooked details, both items look far better than the average Bar’s offerings, and they mostly taste it with the S’mores this time outpacing its counterpart as the “Buttered Rum-Toffee Sauce” was broken and watery in comparison to thick Caramel served previously.

TWO AND A HALF STARS: Built as a Beer Hall and Sports Bar, but without a bartender and opting for trash like Taylor Swift or Post Malone instead of play-by-play, one really hopes management rectifies these issues quickly to better showcase what could otherwise be a great family-friendly place to watch the game.

RECOMMENDED: Shorty Pizza, Breakfast Burrito, S’mores Cake.
AVOID: Coming here to watch sports until management decides it is a place to watch sports.

TIP: Website suggests Sunday-Thursday 11am-10pm, Friday & Saturday 11am-12am. Social Media indicates Sunday 11am-10pm, Friday-Saturday 11am-12am, Monday-Thursday 4p-10pm. Menu says 9am-12pm Breakfast on Weekends.

Slowly gathering steam in the Southwest, a Thursday in the middle of September found Locale Italian Kitchen firing on all cylinders, Nicole Brisson’s Food predictably outpacing anything nearby while a front of house led by Paulo Duran also lived up to high standards.

Given some time to settle in after June’s “Media” event, a compromised service displaying the good and bad about Locale’s little kitchen (and Las Vegas “food writers” that offer near-universal praise for fear of not getting invited to the next free meal,) it was as a party of nine that Carte-blanche was deferred to Chef Brisson, the $90 per-person budget not exceeded despite everyone leaving stuffed with several boxes of leftovers.

Setting out to explore the sort of Food one might find in rural Italy, artisan imports alongside locally-sourced Meats and Produce building a menu that is accessible yet interesting, it is beneath high ceilings that Locale spreads across seventy-five seats, the bar separated from main dining area by sliding barn doors while décor straddles a line between modern and farmhouse.

A partnership with Andy Hooper of Black Sheep, the relaxed atmosphere and quality Ingredients at a fair price welcoming families for lunch and dinner daily, it was with cocktails in hand and conversation flowing that dinner got started, complimentary Cheese Crisps a good choice in lieu of Bread service while Locale’s “Bruised Apple” saw the sweetness of Brandy and Rum kept in check by Citrus and Amaro.

Served in four courses, each plate described at length by Paulo or an educated server, it was focusing on a diversity of palates that appetizers arrived, the Ricotta Fritters an immediate highlight thanks to their lightness despite frying while Frito Misto also fared well between bites of two locally-sourced Salads.

A bit disappointed by Pastas during June’s dinner, but thrilled to report significant improvements in Spaghetti’s texture plus the addition of Nicole’s Beef Cheek Ravioli from Carnevino, course two also offered two Pizzas, the oblong crust a little under-proofed but still offering a good chew whether topped in traditional Tomatoes, Basil and Mozz or folds of Mortadella brightened by Lemons, Herbs and Horseradish.

Agreeing with a few gripes about the fact that Horseradish is not listed on Locale’s menu, the use of such a potent Ingredient (even in such a small quantity) enough to make several pass on the Mortadella Pie entirely, another off-menu addition was far more readily accepted, the Dry-Aged Tomahawk from Creekstone Farms a pleasant reminder of old-times inside The Palazzo as it was carved tableside before adding a pinch of Salt and Olive Oil.

Going all-in on Entrees, the Eggplant Parmigiano layered like Lasagna in individual vessels with Tomatoes and Cheese, those seeking something lighter should certainly not pass on intrepid Arctic Char cooked perfectly amidst Leeks and Chilis or BoBo Farms Chicken atop toothsome Cornmeal, though the real show-stopper comes in the form of thin medallions of Pork wrapped in Prosciutto with bitter Chicories.

Spicier than some may prefer on two of three Sides, the Corn in particular a dish that threatens to distort the palate against anything that follows, it was with serviceware re-set that Dessert arrived, two items previously tasted still enjoyable but definitely an area where there is room to grow.

FOUR STARS: While Blue Diamond may never be a destination for tourists, what Andy Hooper and Nicole Brisson have built at Locale Italian Kitchen is precisely what the area has been looking for. From Salads to Pizzas and Pasta to large-format Meats Locale truly has something for everyone and even mostly full the high ceilings keep noise levels low enough so that one needn’t shout to be heard.

RECOMMENDED: Ricotta Fritters, Beef Cheek Ravioli, Creekstone Farms Bone-In Dry-Aged Tomahawk, Saltimbocca, Pollo al Forno, Pan Seared Arctic Char, Parmigiano, Plantation Rum Budino.

AVOID: Brentwood Sweet Corn, Tempesta Mortadella Pizza (if you have any aversion to Horseradish)

TIP: Lunch Monday through Friday from 11:00am-2:30pm, Brunch beginning 10:30am Weekends, and Dinner Daily from 4:30-10:00pm

Although Las Vegas has no shortage of great Restaurants the last three Septembers have featured Jean George Steakhouse as the culmination of Olympia Weekend, and despite service gaffs occurring from entry to exit there remains no fault in the Steaks, Meats, Sides and Desserts prepared by Sean Griffin and his team in the kitchen.

Certainly not saving Las Vegas’ best Steakhouse for a yearly event, dinner on Saturday the thirteenth since Chef Griffin returned after a stint at PRIME, it was as a party of eight that deference was given to the kitchen in terms of menu, though an inexplicably lengthy wait at the hostess station delayed guests’ enjoyment of house Brioche and the first of several Cocktails highlighted by Vodka, Green Tea and Citrus inside a weighty brass vessel.

Featuring several changes since May, but not forgetting previously enjoyed classics, it was shortly after Brourbon requested “neat” arrived with Ice that an amuse of Eggs and Toast was served, the thin slices of Bread purposefully delivering Yolk and Caviar across two bites before spicy Shrimp and Jean Georges airy Gougeres draped with slices of raw Wagyu were showcased.

Onward with familiar favorites, the great debate between seared Duck Liver and chilled preparations again a toss-up when comparing Chef Griffin’s Pepper Crusted version with a creamy riff on Marzipan, Salads offered temporary respite between heavier courses, Produce predictably exemplary from Heirloom Tomatoes and Coconut to spicy Corn with Arugula or a Jean George’s Bacon-studded Wedge.

Stunned by additional service errors preceding Steaks and Sides, forgotten Drink refills and share-plates collected at inopportune times culminating with utensils that arrived only after a wooden board of Meat was placed at table’s center, it was after a brief description that everyone dug in, an absence of Sauces only remedied on request even though it was largely unnecessary considering the quality of cuts ranging from Filet Mignon to New York Strip and two-types of Ribeye.

Never slacking with sides, pressure-cooked Potatoes beneath a cheesy lattice and Sweet Corn made creamy with Manchego standing out while Sin City’s best Fried Chicken remains a silent stunner, it was in preparation for Dessert that Coffee readied the palate, an #instagram-friendly version of Jean Georges Warm Valrhona Chocolate Cake speaking volumes about what “matters” in 2019 while Crème Brulee and Ice Cream disguised as Limes and Lemons were enjoyable, though lacking the “soul” of Jean Georges Apple Pie or its cast-iron stand-in of Blueberry Cobbler.

FOUR STARS: Still a great Restaurant, but on this night compromising Chef Griffin’s efforts with frankly poor service, one hopes this does not signal a decline for Las Vegas’ best Steakhouse or a turn towards the likes of STK and CUT where a certain “look” seems to matter more than taste or service.

RECOMMENDED: Foie Gras Marzipan, Pepper Crusted Foie Gras, Wagyu Carpaccio, Tomato Salad, Parmesan Crusted Potatoes, Dry-Aged Bone-In Ribeye, Prime Filet Mignon, Crunchy Organic Chicken, Blueberry Cobbler.

Still packed nearly twenty-months since opening, it was as a party of eight that Esther’s Kitchen was visited on Saturday, the Brunch menu largely unaltered from when it launched in early 2019, though that certainly is not a negative considering the overall quality and quantity of Chef James Trees’ Food.

Quickly raising in the ranks of places this writer takes out-of-town visitors, an Arts District location easily accessible by Uber from Las Vegas Boulevard, it was shortly after noon that all guests were accommodated in a large table at room’s center, Chef Ashley Nichole Winkelman (wo)manning the pass while James spent the day helping out at Ada’s in Tivoli Village.

Always a tricky place to order at, the fact that everything sounds good combining with large portions and fair prices that virtually guarantees leftovers, it was with Coffee shaken on Ice that Brunch got started, the diluted beverage a lone letdown given the ease of Cold Brew while others praised a variety of Cocktails including “HOGWASH” featuring Prosciutto-tinged Bourbon.

Focused on favorites from the past, and adding a pair of weekend specials, it was with Drop Biscuits from Baker Dylan Jobsz that dining was underway, Pork mixing nicely with Cheese and herbaceous Butter while two follow-up Toasts highlighted House Sourdough, the Smoked Trout met with approval by New Yorkers better accustomed to Bagels while Chorizo and Chili Oil again shined in contrast to fluffy Eggs and Crème Fraiche.

Never passing on Polenta ground on-site, the fried Cheese lattice a necessary component during the day when Sunny Side Eggs might otherwise make the Cornmeal runny, those seeking Pizza in this part of town won’t do better than Esther’s iteration, whether in the form of a classic Margherita or topped with a breakfast-y combination of Bacon, Egg and Cheese beneath a drizzle of Saba.

Assuredly including some of James’ housemade Pasta, though some members of the table were already growing full, a choice between Carbonara and Cacio e Pepe largely comes down to whether one desires Meat or not, though in the case of oversize Polpette cooked slow in Tomato Sugo the only question is whether to order Sin City’s best Meatballs solo or atop Pasta Alla Chitarra.

Finishing up sweet, and probably overdoing it in terms of carbs (if there is such a thing,) any chance to order Esther’s Bread Pudding French Toast should be seized with both hands, the addition of Pecans a wise choice in terms of texture while Sourdough Pancakes topped in Bananas Foster also warrant attention should they be available as a weekend Special, though perhaps not at the expense of Ricotta rounds that eat lighter than one might imagine beneath macerated Blueberries and Lemon Butter.

FIVE STARS: Not overlooking great service, nor a top-notch soundtrack and slices of Blueberry Almond Cake with #Allthevanilla Ice Cream from Ada’s, “if they serve one more bite of food I’ll punch you” will resonate as a reminder of Esther’s value on the dollar for some time, though it likely will not make future orders any smaller because to leave out any of the items listed above would be a mistake.

RECOMMENDED: #allthethings seems appropriate for this section.

AVOID: Iced Coffee.

TIP: Ignore the Morning Bun listed on the Esther’s Kitchen online menu as it does not exist, but do pay attention to Social Media for Specials.

Although there are no *guarantees* in life, it is almost certain that guests visiting this writer’s home will end up at Bardot Brasserie, because for the past 4.5 years no Restaurant in Las Vegas has shown such consistent excellence in its price-range.

Typically a space best-enjoyed with a group, though no less impressive as a date night destination, it was as a party of seven that a visit on Friday the 13th occurred, not one thing about the night frightening save for perhaps the number of calories consumed over nineteen plates plus plenty of housemade Bread, Cocktails and Whiskey.

Offering a Carte Blanche Menu insubstantially altered from dinner in July, a few seasonal adjustments preceding Chef Smith’s Autumn overhaul, it was once all guests were accounted for that course one arrived featuring Bardot standbys, the Foie Gras Parfait still unparalleled in Sin City while a meticulously plated King Crab & Endive Salad as well as Bardot’s Steak Tartare each put great Ingredients front and center to traditional ideas presented with improvisation.

Moving to warm Appetizers with another trio, more Foie Gras leading the way with a seared Steak beneath shredded Beef and Sauce Bordelaise, it was a mix of old and new that also impressed, Snails in Puff Pastry just as good as they were when Bardot opened its doors and Chef Smith’s “Pop Tarte Flambé” just as clever in the way it takes a classic idea and spins it modern without losing any of the context.

Onward to Entrees, some served double and others large enough to share across the table, one would be challenged to name a better Lamb dish in town than Bardot’s Rack with Falafel and Apricots, while those seeking Shellfish will potentially feel the same about Viking Village Scallops seared just past raw amidst bright backdrop of Summer Produce and briny-Brown Butter.

Never forgetting Macaroni standing at attention, and particularly the Bechamel, additional sides included truffled Potatoes plus late-season Asparagus, the latter unfortunately a bit too fibrous with stomachs already full and the table also graced by Duck a l’Orange, smoked Pork and 40oz of Bardot’s world-class Beef Wellington with golden Pastry and Foie Gras Gravy.

Reinvigorated by a Double Espresso, while others battled satiety, jet lag and booze, it was as expected that Dessert would be over-the-top, miniature versions of the Macaron and Crème Brulee easily managed but twin Tart Tatins and dueling Baked Alaska an embarrassment of riches from which no clear winner could be decided, largely because the Pineapples on Puff Pastry is pretty much perfect and the tableside show followed by Ice Cream and Meringue is always a delight.

FIVE STARS: Already America’s best Bistro or Brasserie, Bardot at Aria continue to evolve by seamlessly integrating classic technique and clever ideas into elegant plates that look and taste as good as what one will find throughout Europe.

RECOMMENDED: Foie Gras Parfait, Seared Foie Gras Rossini, Pop Tarte Flambé, Macaroni & Mimolette Gratinee, Rack of Lamb Bohemienne, Duck a l’Orange, Beef Wellington, Strawberry Shortcake Baked Alaska, Pineapple Tarte Tatin, Peach Cobbler Baked Alaska.

AVOID: N/A.

TIP: Offer still stands, if anyone can name a French Bistro or Brasserie outperforming Bardot in North America (and back it up with evidence) I’ll fly there within 6 months to find out for myself.

Pineapple Parfait – White Chocolate, Rum Meyer Lemon Cake, Macadamia Nuts, Dragon Fruit, Pineapple Sorbet, Vanilla Sabayon

Originally known as Aqua, but since reborn twice as MICHAEL MINA Restaurant, it was behind The Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens that five guests sat down for Dinner on Thursday, service led by Jorge Pagani once again faultless as the kitchen showed off a seasonal bounty.

A former Michelin star recipient in the guide’s Las Vegas days, accolades that would have undoubtedly continued or received an upgrade with MICHAEL MINA’s 2018 shift towards market-fresh Seafood, it is under the watch of Executive Chef Nick Dugan that the kitchen has operated since Spring of this year, his time working with Bocuse d’Or Coach Gavin Kaysen in Minnesota apparent in plates that showcase great ingredients in complicated ways without seeming tedious or ‘fussy.’

Always a special place, though the recently-added lounge menu looks to offer guests a more casual way to experience some of Chef Dugan’s Food in the front, it was while a large party took place in the main dining room that Carte Blanche was requested by friends gathering cross-country, a Champagne toast starting things off and quickly followed by Michael Mina’s timeless Caviar Parfait.

Cleansing the palate with an icy shot of Belvedere, and continuing on with an a la minute French 75 built around Hibiscus and Cucumbers, Mina’s Bread Basket once again proved tempting despite many courses to follow, soft Laffa excellent regardless of condiments and also well-utilized for sopping up Sauces or the remainder of Sweet Corn Gazpacho poured tableside onto King Crab, Melon and Peppers.

Impressed by Nick’s Pithivier in May, and finding equally splendid Pastry surrounding a Tomato Tart brightened by Bacon and Honey, it was with the linger of Truffles still present that two types of Foie Gras followed, the cold preparation matching Liver to Plums with textural toppings while a whole-roasted Lobe divided tableside wowed even those skeptical with the sweet and savory contrast of Peaches and roasting Juices perfumed by Truffles.

Already a remarkable meal, though only at the midway point, guests were next treated to a new-signature in the form of triple-tiered Shellfish grilled with Japanese influence, the wrist-thick lengths of Crap and Dayboat Scallops standing out from pack while Lobster also shined here and as the centerpiece of Michael’s famous Pot Pie.

Making the Pot Pie “Surf n’ Turf” by way of two 24oz Dry-Aged Rib Eyes, a cut of Meat that would stand out at any Steakhouse on the Strip, it was after leftovers were packed that Desserts from Vivian Chang took center stage, the seasonal Panna Cotta walking a tightrope of sweet and sour atop peerless textures while Chocolate Cake, a reworked Pineapple Parfait and Summer’s beautiful Honeycomb Pavlova all impressed the eye and mouth equally.

FIVE STARS: In an ever-changing market it is easy to overlook small changes, but with its reinvention last year MICHAEL MINA took a big step forward, and with Chefs Nick Dugan and Vivian Chang now overseeing the Kitchen and Pastry program, respectively, the Restaurant remains nothing short of remarkable whether ordering Mina’s classics or seasonal inspirations.

RECOMMENDED: Michael Mina’s Caviar Parfait, Heirloom Tomato Tarte, Foie Gras Torchon, Whole Roasted Foie Gras, Hot Charcoal Grilled Shellfish Platter, Michael’s Lobster Pot Pie, Crème Fraiche Panna Cotta, Honey Comb Pavlova.

AVOID: N/A.

TIP: The Market List Menu is prone to daily change and Whole Foie Gras requires advanced notice.

Sotero Cozinha Original

Toasted Cheese Pastel

Shredded Beef and Cheese Bolinho

Feijoada, Rice, Greens, Pork Rib, Pork Cracklings, Farofa

When people think of Brazilian food it is typically grilled Meats and Feijoada, the latter offered at any number of Restaurants from north to south but particularly praised by trusted palates in its more rustic form as served on Saturdays at places like Sotero Cozinha Original.

Known as one of São Paulo’s best places for the Cuisine of Bahia, an area in Northeast Brazil that features dishes influenced by Africa, Sotero Cozinha Original occupies a continuous indoor-outdoor space in the Santa Cecilia neighborhood, and although largely a locals-only space the customer service shines despite menus only offered in Portuguese.

Featuring a bar with over 400 kinds of Cachaça, in addition to a bounty of dishes celebrating Brazil’s diverse heritage, it is into items designed for individuals or sharing that options are divided, the R$59 described as “very much Food” by a waitress dissuading exploration beyond an airy Cheese Pastel and fried-to-order Bolinho filled with Carne Seca.

Saving Bahaian options for a trip to that part of Brazil, the server’s warning fulfilled by a stone vessel overflowing with Pork, Beef, Beans and Offal alongside Rice, Greens, Pork Rib, Farofa and Cracklings, it was after tasting a bit of each that several plates were arranged as a mix, everything from Kidneys to Tripe making an appearance along the way and the best bites those with a bit of funk kept in check by bitter Collards, Beans and Cassava Flour.

Davvero Gelato Tradizionale (Iguatemi Shopping,) São Paulo BR

Davvero Gelato Tradizionale

Samples: 63% Cocoa, White Coffee, Crème Brulee

Dulce de Leche, Tapioca, Cookie, Sugar Cone filled with Chocolate

Less well known than Sao Paulo’s ubiquitous Bacio di Latte, Davvero Gelato Tradizionale brings classic Italian technique and flavors plus a few local additions to Brazil.

Originally opened in 2016, and subsequently expanding across four locations including a small outpost on the ground floor of Shopping Iguatemi, it is from 10h00 until 22h00 daily that Davvero offers products made from Organic Milk, Fruit and Cocoa – the addition of liquid Chocolate to each Sugar Cone an added bonus.

Fast paced and fairly priced, locations outside a mall Food Court likely less busy, it is following Samples that decision time arrives, the Crème Brulee undoubtedly tough to pass up with its shattering shards of Sugar but Dulce de Leche and sticky Tapioca nonetheless winning out thanks to their distinct yet complimentary textures.

Restaurante Manioca, São Paulo BR

Manioca

Basket of Breads – Tapioca Starch Chips, Requeijao Cream Cheese, Cheese Curd

Mani Egg, Heart of Palm Froth, Olive Oil

Heart of Palm Taglierini, Parmesan Sauce, Greens

“The Egg”, Coconut Foam, Eggnog Ice Cream, Mini Crunchy Coconuts

“The Secret of the Cake”, Chocolate and Brigadeiro Cake, Powder Milk Ice Cream

Considered the casual cousin of Helena Rizzo’s Mani, Manioca occupies the back of a bookstore inside Iguatemi Shopping with some of the Chef’s classic plates plus Salads, Sandwiches and Desserts executed by a team led by Bianca Monteiro.

Popular since 2015, and recently eliminating a “no reservations” policy that had done little to diminish interest in a place often featuring long lines, it was only after asking an attendant in the multi-tiered mall that the Restaurant was discovered behind Livraria Cultura, its interior bright and spacious with plenty of organic flourishes.

Open for Lunch and Dinner daily, a Sunday arrival at 12h00 soon finding every seat filled by a variety of ages, guests not fluent in Portuguese will be happy to know translated menus are offered though servers remain stiff, a situation no different from Rizzo’s Michelin starred space but more out of place in such casual environs.

A Bib Gourmand recipient in its own right, though prices aren’t much different from Mani when compared dish for dish, it was opting to dine in three courses that a R$20 Couvert was accepted, the same Tapioca Chips previously experienced here just as good but with only two Cheeses as accoutrements.

Deciding to order only classics in this setting, the dishes that established Rizzo’s name faithfully reproduced inside a sizable kitchen, course one featured a 63ᵒ Egg amidst foam made from Olive Oil and Hearts of Palm, another bit of modernist cooking arriving subsequently as “Noodles” of Vegetables topped with Parmesan Sauce and Herbs.

Passing over Burgers and grilled Meats in favor of Dessert, “The Egg” presumably created via ISI canister and only interesting for crunchy bits of Coconut hidden beneath a sea of Foam, it was finally “The Secret of the Cake” which warranted applause, layers of Sponge and Brigadeiro Frosting alternating with beautiful textures and richness finding its foil in lightly sweetened Ice Cream.

Café e Bar Stalos

Cheesecake Romeu e Julieta – Creamy Cheese Mousse topped with Guava Jelly

Torta Churros – White Cake stuffed with Dulce de Leche and topped with Cinnamon Sugar

Torta Chocolate com Doce De Leite e Amendoas – Chocolate Cake stuffed with Dulce de Leche, Chocolate Cream and Almonds

Classic Brigadeiro

Located in Copacabana, and offering a wide variety of traditional Brazilian plates as well as Desserts, Café e Bar Stalos remains open 24/7 and can frequently be found quite busy with a good mix of locals as well as tourists.

An inhabitant of Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana for several years, modern décor and televisions tuned to futebol creating a welcoming environment around red furniture and Formica, it is on large overhead displays that Stalos’ savories are featured prominently, a smaller paper menu left to describe items lining Pastry cases near the register.

Serving its role with friendly service and fair prices, a lack of Portuguese fluency overcome through visual inspection and descriptive explanations, it was with five items boxed to-go that the bill was paid in Cash, a refrigerator keeping things cool overnight and everything holding up well until Breakfast the next day at GIG while awaiting a plane to São Paulo.

Unable to reheat Savories, and thus focusing only on Café e Bar Stalos’ sweet side, it was in an attempt to proceed from light to heavy that Breakfast began with traditional Lime Cake, the soft Sponge surrounded by subtle Citrus further muted by Chantilly while Romeu e Julieta Cheesecake fared far better thanks to creamy Mousse and a thick layer of Guava Jelly.

Unable to resist Dulce de Leche, two additional Cakes finding Vanilla and Chocolate Sponges stuffed with caramelized Condensed Milk, it was largely the presence of Nuts that saw the second fare better, though would be hard to suggest Cocoa was not also involved considering the creamy consistency of Stalos’ housemade Brigadeiro.
