Now approaching four years at Green Valley Ranch Resort Spa and Casino it was in celebration of National Pizza Day that seats were taken at Pizza Rock, the same table earmarked for eight guests in April 2016 this time hosting six including a young boy who was kept entertained by an ADHD-inducing stream of people doing stupid things on CHIVE TV displayed across several televisions.

Largely unchanged through the intervening years, Tony Gemignani’s team still in charge of several ovens while front-of-house is competent but mostly perfunctory in terms of service, it was following a group of conventioners that guests were seated at 11:30am, approximately 50% of the Restaurant’s 200+ seats filled an hour later as Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and R.E.M. played at modest volume.

Spread across a lengthy space with everything from a big truck to bar area, the menu equally expansive with Pizza-styles from New York to California and Naples represented, it was after clarifying both the order and timing that Drinks were filled, Iced Tea for many instead of Pepsi products while others simply drank Water that was kept full across the ninety-minute visit.

Slow to get started, NCAA Basketball plus live NHL action and conversation filling the time, it was after perhaps half-an-hour that two Pizzas arrived simultaneously, an “Old Chicago” baked in brick with gas outperforming any Midwestern “Bar Pie” thanks to unbleached Flour that maintains a lot of tooth beneath piped Ricotta, Sausage and Meatballs while a touch of Cheddar provides just enough Salt to brighten a thin layer of Tomato Sauce.

Not skimping on Ingredients, the $26 “New Yorker” placed on a stand next to its Windy City cousin loaded with Meat and Cheese, guests in search of a great “Slice” will be delighted to see Tony’s Award Winning Pie blistered and bubbly, the ability to stand up with barely a fold attesting to quality Flour and evenly heated ovens while housemade Fennel Sausage adds a lingering herbal essence that plays well off the char.

Finishing every bite of round one, specifically requesting two additional Pies be fired twenty minutes later preventing a log-jam previously experienced both at Pizza Rock GVR and DTLV, it was as trays were cleared that Cal Italia and Detroit Red Top were presented, the award-winning former expectedly sweet but brilliantly balanced inside a delicate Cornicione while Mo-Town’s recently resurgent style showed Gemignani to be ahead of the curve as he’s been offering this buttey pillow almost fully encased in Cheese and striped with Marinara since opening at the Downtown Grand in 2013.

Disappointed to learn that Brunch is only offered on Sunday, the French Toast targeted as Dessert thus unavailable while Pizza Rock’s Mud Pie wasn’t “ready yet” at 1:00pm, it was in consolation that four Zeppole were offered, Tony’s Flour frying up more like a Beignet with great texture and pronounced Cardamom that paired well with both lemony Cream and thick Caramel but less-so Dark Chocolate Sauce.

FOUR STARS: Every-bit deserving of his myriad accolades it is great to see Tony Gemignani succeeding across multiple Las Vegas venues, the owner’s hands-on approach undoubtedly on display in a kitchen from which every Pie both looks and tastes as it should, though the FOH still seems a bit robotic and being “out of” menu items (save for those listed as being in limited supply) is unacceptable.

RECOMMENDED: New Yorker, Old Chicago, Detroit Red Top.

AVOID:  Mud Pie at Lunch, apparently, and arriving too late if seeking the Margherita which is limited to 73 Pizzas daily.

TIP: Happy Hour is offered from 3p-6p and 10p to close daily, and during Vegas Knights games fans who “Wear their Gear” get a free Beer with any $10 purchase.

Without question one of the most important off-Strip Restaurants in Las Vegas, ongoing recognition from customers and local Media attesting to this fact while several new openings on Spring Mountain Road suggest Chef Brian Howard to have initiated a cultural shift, it was as a group of six that dinner was enjoyed at Sparrow + Wolf of Friday, the new Private Dining Room utilizing previously neglected real estate and creating an environment more conducive to conversation.

Open since May 2017 and an ongoing hot-ticket, frequent menu changes plus an innovative Cocktail program drawing a diverse crowd that trends young, it was just prior to 6:15pm that all were seated at a long table situated where the hostess stand previously existed, views of the kitchen available but somewhat more limited than previously thanks to a culinary library reportedly soon to triple.

Serving seven days a week based on popularity, signage out front suggesting Tuesday’s dark no longer accurate, it was after greetings from educated staff led by John Anthony that options were perused, three nightly specials offering additional temptation beyond 75% new plates compared to nine months prior.

Now presenting just one tasting menu, $125 per guest, it was as a result of less-adventurous palates that a la carte was instead selected, two Loaves of housemade Bread starting things off and quickly devoured prior to the arrival of other plates including Crudo, Salad, Scallops and a complimentary “Ocean Parfait” that placed tender Tongues of Uni beneath saline Cream with a bit of heat and added umami from lightly smoked Fish Eggs.

Acknowledging Urchin to be an acquired taste, though this allowed plenty of Parfait for those who enjoy the flavor and consistency, it was as a sort of mid-course that additional plates arrived as Rage Against the Machine played overhead, Duck Confit & Sweet Potato Dumplings unfortunately over-aggressive with Chili Oil that rendered the contents mute while Pate En Croute amidst assertive sourness and an elegant Foie Gras preparation serving three ounces prepared in Pumpkin Oil atop Brioche were hearty yet balanced and perfect for colder temperatures outside.

In no particular hurry, conversation flowing from both ends of the table as System of a Down played at modest volume, it was thirty minutes after Appetizers were cleared that Entrees arrived, a staggered delivery allowing everything to be tasted temperature appropriate with the Wood Fired Lasagna expectedly a fan favorite while many encountering Skate for the first time marveled at its buttery Flesh that Chef Howard carefully pairs to bright Citrus.

Growing heavier from here, sides of layered Potatoes with Chives and Trout Roe plus grilled Eggplant that reminisces of deconstructed Baba Ghanoush completing a full table, guests willing to share are encouraged to strongly consider the 32oz Porterhouse offered with side-plates including Eggs, Octopus and several Sauces while those seeking something truly special should not forgo Lamb’s Neck braised on the Bone and served with pickled Fruits and Vegetables that can either help refresh the mouth between bites or be used in conjunction with supple Meat and Scallion Pancakes to create a complex mouthful

Requesting Coffee with Dessert, its arrival almost ten minutes after never explained, suffice it to say that the fact that some Carrot Cake was left-over despite being divided by six diners should attest to how well “Parsley-Yogurt” Sorbet went over, the remainder all far better with flattened Pavlova light and fragrant while Honey Toast and the all-new Caramelized White Chocolate Terrine competed for top-billing, the latter surely more labor intensive and multifaceted thanks to top notes of Cardamom and Cumin though the guilty pleasure aspect of toasted Bread, Honey and lots of Butter is impossible to deny.

FOUR AND A HALF STARS: Always a confident Restaurant, but evolving by way of a series of self-edits into a mature space that can accommodate almost any sort of diner, Sparrow + Wolf may never serve a “perfect meal” because of the chances Chef Howard is willing to take, but for the sake of progress that is something guests seem willing to accept and any minor “miss” is sure to be made up for by at least three that are very impressive.

RECOMMENDED: Heritage Pork Pate En Croute, Foie Gras, Wood Fired Lasagna, Skate Wing, Braised Lamb Neck, Honey Toast, Caramelized White Chocolate Terrine.

AVOID: Duck Confit & Sweet Potato Dumplings and Carrot Cashew Cake were completely overwhelmed by their accoutrements.

TIP: According to Mr. Anthony the long-term plan for Sparrow + Wolf’s PDR is that it become a daytime library for those looking to further their culinary knowledge.

The Green Valley Pizza – Zucchini, Mushrooms, Onions, Cherry Tomatoes, Olives, Tomato Sauce, Mozzarella Cheese

Serving Las Vegas for nearly forty years one might assume Metro Pizza has the delivery game down to a science, and with National Pizza Day on Saturday it seemed only right to #supportlocal on Friday with five Pies plus Meatballs, Pasta and Salad.

By far one of city’s easiest caterers to work with, an e-mail typically answered within a couple hours by Sara, it is at almost any budget that Metro can coordinate delivery from one of four locations, the online menu offering a wide array of family-size dishes though making a few requests and letting the well-trained staff take it from there is usually the safest route to ensure there is plenty of everything.

Never late or forgetting anything across seven events, a delivery driver named Damien this time arriving ten minutes early with plates, utensils, extra Sauce and Condiments, it was with everything unboxed that attendees dug in, John Arena’s assertion that Pizza changes in the box perhaps true to a degree, but slices of the 86th Street Sicilian nonetheless piping hot and lighter than anyone would guess, one speaker commenting this was her new favorite Pizza in town and that she “didn’t even know Metro made square Slices…” a follower as yet unpurchased by happytummy and unlokt, perhaps?

Straying from the typical for additional Pies, though The Green Valley remains a necessity for Vegetarians, it was with skepticism that some eyed the Cicero before finding sidecars of Sauce, many then spreading the word to others and each hefty wedge gone in an hour with many comparing the texture to a Panini or “Cheesy Bread.”

Not expecting some to understand Mike’s Hot Honey on a Pizza, and thoroughly surprised when Metro’s new Zamboni was the first Pie gone, it was from Pasta and Meatballs with almost no binder that others got their fill, though those still sticking to New Year’s Resolutions were happy to find Chopped Salad with Metro’s house Italian Dressing that always finds itself going home with someone at day’s end.

N/A: Making it blog policy to not ‘rate’ places based on catering alone there is a reason John and Sam have been successfully serving Las Vegas for so long, a good part of it skill and doing things the right way, but also by hiring good people like Sara and focusing on the customer to deliver on their promises no matter how big or small the budget.

RECOMMENDED: 86th Street Square Pie, Meatballs, Zamboni, Cicero, Chopped Salad.

AVOID: N/A.

When China Tang replaced Pearl at MGM Grand Hotel and Casino it is probable that most Westerners barely noticed, the Lai Sun Group out of Hong Kong not as well-known or heavily marketed as Hakkasan or Mott32 but the Restaurant nonetheless exceedingly popular overseas thanks to their focus on Cuisine popular during the Tang Dynasty.

Located in The District across from Emeril’s Fish House, the Lounge up front likely dissuading some as hotel guests loudly pass by, it is immediately behind the Bar that more refined environs are located, the combination of slate tables and comfortable chairs spread across an airy space decorated in art while a young woman sings traditional songs from a stage to the right.

Undoubtedly an expensive build-out, Private Dining Rooms featuring ancient porcelain and Executive Chef Larry Ng’s kitchen in possession of live tanks plus an $80,000 Duck oven and space dedicated specifically to Dim Sum, it is from a menu spanning several pages that diners are asked to make decisions, the famous Beijing Duck strongly suggested as a request during booking though there is a chance one might get lucky and find it available without reservations depending on date and time.

Classy but accessible, the wait staff perfectly mannered, courteous and happy to offer suggestions, it was alongside hot Tea that dinner was served, a first bite of snappy Abalone seeing the Mollusk’s sweetness highlighted by Sake and a pinch of what tasted like Ginger plus Soy that had been used to tenderize the Meat.

Told stories of the Dim Sum Chefs while waiting, an entire brigade of Men and Women tasked with just these items, it was a quintet of Dumplings from both dinner and Chinese New Year menus that soon arrived, the XLB without doubt Sin City’s best in terms of both Skin and Soup while shredded Crab inside a Saffron Wrapper was delicate and fragrant in contrast to Fried Shrimp and Foie Gras that was expectedly decadent with lingering richness worth every cent.

Not a place for shortcuts, all Noodles hand-pulled including a bowl topped in fresh Shrimp and Chili Oil, it was with tongue tingling that another traditional plate was offered, three sun dried Oysters finding salinity concentrated but existing in harmony with a light Honey glaze and puffed Rice that sticks ever so lightly offering textural variance.

To this point having not seen a Duck, though several would roll out over the next three hours, it was after presenting the imported Bird that careful knife strokes were made tableside, Skin presented first and advised with Sugar that saw each shard shatter like glass while meatier cuts served next were placed on Pancakes not quite as thin as Mott32’s, but not too far off either, plus condiments including Hoisin, Cucumbers and Cantaloupe.

Returning the carcass to the kitchen, a Bone-in second service arriving later with lots of spice, guests looking for Fish rarely seen in Nevada will be delighted to know China Tang offers Grouper and Goby in addition to choice Seafood like Crab and Lobster, but on this particular night the real prize was a sizable Coral Cod with butter-soft Flesh prepared in the steamer and served with Black Fungus, bits of Pork Belly and Tofu that took on the flavor of all three plus a delicate Gravy.

Not yet done seducing diners, tender Pork Loin wok-seared like Salt and Pepper Shrimp just one of many healthy choices in addition to bundles of steamed Cabbage packed with umami, it was in traditional fashion that savories culminated with Meat and Rice, Las Vegas’ only source for F1 Wagyu doubling down with tender cubes fried alongside Garlic plus more with Rice and added luxury in the form of Mushrooms and fragrant Truffle Paste.

At this point well sated, though a bowl of Sticky Rice fried to a previously unseen texture continued to temp until the last few spoonfuls were gone, it was with traditional Desserts that dinner culminated, the steamed Sponge Cake so light it essentially dissolved on the tongue while New Year’s Rice Cake and Walnut Soup were less photogenic stunners, the latter in particular as tiny Dumplings hidden by the creamy Potage burst to the tooth yielding a flood of lightly sweetened Sesame Seed Puree.

FOUR AND A HALF STARS: Sparring no expense to impress guests interested in an experience rarely seen outside the Eastern Hemisphere China Tang is every bit as “fine dining” as Nomad or Michael Mina in terms of service and ingredients, their only challenge being convincing Las Vegas locals and American tourists that “Ethnic Food” warrants equal cost and stature, which in the case of everything but the Restaurant’s front section China Tang does beautifully.

RECOMMENDED: Sliced Chilled Abalone, Crab Meat Dumplings, Deep Fried Shrimp Mousse Ball, Xiao Long Bao, Honey Soy Glazed Dried Oyster, Traditional Beijing Roasted Duck, Garlic Stir-Fried Japanese F1 Wagyu Beef, Fried Glutinous Rice, Walnut Soup.

AVOID: N/A, but bring a group for the large format Fishes as many are charged by weight, including the Coral Cod at $288.88 for 2.5lbs.

TIP: Some items above are only available from February 3 through February 10 in celebration of the Chinese New Year. See pictures for full menu and prices as the website is lacks both.

In the era of Social Media and Public Relations it is rare to see any sort of dining event kept “secret,” but for two weeks each year Jasmine at The Bellagio quietly opens its doors during daylight hours for a Dim Sum Brunch celebrating the New Year, first in a global sense and then to commemorate the Chinese version.

Unadvertised save for a colorful board outside the Restaurant, this year spanning February 2nd to the 11th from 11:00am until 2:30pm, it is approximately fifteen minutes prior to opening etched doors that guests begin queuing, never mind the fact that most have reservations but rather for the chance to sit with an unobstructed view of Bellagio’s famous fountains.

Attended for the second consecutive year, a cost of $68.88 per diner and just $20.00 for children far lower than Jasmine’s equally splendid dinner, it was after seating by familiar staff including Connie Shin that most guests stood to begin perusing some ninety choices spread across a variety of Buffet and Live Stations.

Truly a grand display, traditional Dim Sum and Chinese Barbeque lined up alongside items decorated in everything from Truffles and Bird’s Nest to Abalone, it would not be long before most early arrivals returned to their table with plates full, fresh Oysters and Crab Legs a popular choice amongst the largely Asian crowd though many also gravitated towards a display of baked and fried Dim Sum that this year replaced Walnut Prawns with Shrimp Balls while retaining previous favorites including Cheese Baked Buns and flaky Egg Tarts with Bird’s Nest.

Moving slowly and eyeing variety, Shellfish and Sushi declined in favor of items less commonly experienced in such a setting, it was as a young woman played the guzheng that plate two was enjoyed, the Braised Brisket a little tough but five other options all exquisite with special attention reserved for wrapped Pork and Sticky Rice that is just a touch sweet plus gently steamed Eggplant topped in vibrant X.O. Sauce.

Focusing next on silver steam trays lining the center, left and right mirrored to create a seamless flow of traffic, it was as the fountains again danced outside that Sea Cucumber and Black Truffle each made an appearance prior to again tasting Jasmine’s brilliant Sea Moss Scallop Dumpling, the explosive flavors only rivaled this year by Siu Mai given a big upgrade by way of tender Abalone which leads well into Nian Gao that is lightly caramelized such that a slight crackle gives way to sticky sweetness.

Sad to see Cordyceps Congee replaced by Fish and Peanuts, though both texture and taste remain refined, it was after a few Barbecue choices that all-new Bubble Waffles were tasted, the choice to grab pre-made segments or wait for fresh obvious to all but the impatient with the reward hot and fluffy beneath a selection of condiments including freshly Whipped Cream, Berries, Candy and four flavors of Condensed Milk.

Making another trip for favorites, a fresh tray of Sesame Balls better than the first thanks to more textural contrast, it was only Passion Fruit Shooters and Matcha Cake that were passed-up amongst Dessert choices, the Choux a bit mixed with some flawless and others a bit damp while Macarons, Guava Tarts and a narrow glass of Panna Cotta plus several fresh Fruits were all delicious.

FIVE STARS: Although Las Vegas’ Dim Sum scene improved tremendously in 2018, both Mott32 and China Tang bringing their Hong Kong brands to Sin City, there remains no other time or place to experience such variety and quality as Jasmine during their annual celebration of the New Year.

RECOMMENDED: Fried Shrimp Ball, Cheese Baked Bun, Traditional Egg Tart with Bird’s Nest, Lotus Blossom Sesame Ball, Lup Cheng Char Siew Pork Glutinous Rice Wrap, Steamed Eggplant with X.O. Sauce, New Years Coconut Sponge Cake, Sea Moss Scallop Dumpling, Abalone Shui Mai, Fish and Peanut Congee with Ginger, Honey Glazed BBQ Pork Char Siu, Hong Kong Style Bubble Waffle, Coconut Panna Cotta, Macarons, Chocolate Choux, Guava Meringue Tart.

AVOID: Five Spice Braised Beef Brisket with Daikon was tough and chewy, Baked Dinner Roll was largely flavorless.

TIP: Offered this year from 2/2/19 through 2/11/19, the $68.88 cost does not include tax, tip or beverages. Reservations recommended but not required and early arrival likely to assure best seats.

A favorite since the day it replaced Sugar Factory at Paris Hotel & Casino it was alongside two locals and one guest from Northern California that seats were taken at HEXX Kitchen + Bar, a 3:30pm arrival allowing diners to partake in a few Brunch favorites before switching over to new plates from Alexxa’s Bar plus eight new Desserts.

Now two distinct entities for thirteen months, though not entirely as the former Candy Shop offers HEXX Brunch until 4:00pm when Alexxa’s small plates and Tapas take center stage, it was from familiar staff with great attitudes that the meal began with Cocktails, South of the Border an expected choice for someone who craves Salt and fire while HEXX Fusion is sure to please those with a sweet tooth thanks to Pineapple and Almond in harmony with Rum.

Moving next to Brunch items, the kitchen’s transition to Dinner seamless in the eyes of guests treated to a colorful Fruit plate offering ten varieties alongside airy Cream and bite-size Muffins, it was by request that a new Granola Parfait was also served with Oats, Almonds and Berries plus Honey on the side, a nice option for those seeking something light and customizable, though if not stirred adequately there is a potential for residual dry Oats at the bottom.

Never passing on Carrot Cake Pancakes, the stack of four remaining one of Sin City’s best and a true bargain on The Strip for just $13, it was with every fluffy bite gone that a second course arrived, Alexxa’s superb Chicken Sausage Flatbread unfortunately replaced by a Pizza with less impressive Crust but otherwise similar flavors.

Investing next in some of Alexxa’s new “large plates,” prices ranging $16-$22 but all big enough to share, those looking for a bit of spice will find their fix in crispy Fries capped by Pulled Pork plus Chili Aioli as well as boneless Korean BBQ atop Fried Rice, the more timid probably better off ordering a shallow dish of thick Clam Chowder served alongside Parker House-style Sourdough with a bit of Soup ladled in the middle creating a hybrid pull-apart-Monkey Bread-Bowl.

Minding capacity with a lot of Sugar en route, Chef Miranda Prince’s Instagram feed recently flooded with activity, it was with Coffee in hand that round one of three arrived, a Trio of Cheesecakes from Alexxa’s menu highlighted by Dark Chocolate with a dollop of Ganache while the Lemon Raspberry Naked Cake threatened to topple but never did thanks to soft Lemon Buttercream and rings of Raspberries…plus an onslaught of spoons digging into the airy sponge before gravity ever had a chance.

Onward to the HEXX half, three featuring Fruit and the other trio all offering HEXX Chocolate, those seeking something light should immediately place an order for Chef Miranda’s satiny Panna Cotta bolstered by Buttermilk and Ginger amidst textural elements, the Apple Spice Cake similarly focused on seasonal aromatics over sweetness and not only complex and delicious, but very attractively plated considering the price point.

Flashing forward to summer by way of Cobbler, the Blondie-base served warm beneath slowly-melting Ice Cream, Blueberries and crunchy Kernels, a decision between which Cocoa creations largely comes down to personal preference, Cookies n’ Cream certainly sweetest and very similar to the Cookie it contains while the Brownie is thick like Fudge in contrast to the Pecan Pie which varies from sweet to lightly bitter and even sometimes boozy from bite to bite.

N/A: Hard to “rate” as a whole since items from both HEXX and Alexxa’s Bar were ordered the troublesome delineation between two spaces under one roof again becomes apparent, though considering the same Chefs are responsible for both halves everything tasted sets a high standard for casual dining on-Strip, just as it has from the beginning.

RECOMMENDED: Carrot Cake Pancakes, Bahn Mi Loaded Fries, Clam Chowder, Lemon Raspberry Naked Cake, Apple Spice Cake, Blueberry Corn Cobbler, Ginger Pear Panna Cotta.

AVOID: The Chicken Flatbread was far better than its reinvention as a Pizza, and that is 100% thanks to the base as topping are still delicious while the center is now flaccid and Crust flavorless.

TIP: Alexxa’s Bar Food Menu starts at 4pm daily, as does HEXX’s transition from Brunch to Dinner.

Just over seven months old, and continuously making seasonal tweaks to a menu that targets all ages plus a variety of tastes, it was as a group of three that an elevator was ascended to The Stove, Chef Antonio Nunez present at the pass around 9:15am but soon joining his team in the kitchen as business nearly tripled minutes past ten o’clock.

Found on the second floor of 11261 South Eastern Avenue in Henderson, the former home of Firefly followed by Standard & Pour now serving from 7:00am daily, it was after perusing the day’s Pastries that seats were taken – a full view of the dining room in one direction and mountains beyond the Strip through windows facing the other way.

Offering everything from “American Traditions” to “World Travels” with several sections between it was soon with Coffee and Water poured that The Stove’s Unicorn Hot Chocolate was presented to one guest, the creation now crowned with Cotton Candy and undoubtedly targeting those with a sweet tooth or affinity for Instagram thanks to a Chocolate rim, thick Marshmallows and even Edible Glitter on top.

Onward to more serious things, Pastries now produced in-house by Nunez and a staff member working their way up the ranks, guests that once had to make hard decisions are now offered the choice of a Basket that may come with any number of items including dainty Macarons or oversized Madeliness, all of them good but the highlights on this particular Saturday a molten-centered Dark Chocolate Muffin and another that was Vegan and stuffed with Raspberries as well as Cranberries plus a touch of Lemon.

Told by Chef Nunez that people are “obsessed” with The Stove’s Chipotle Gravy it was for just $6 that a griddled Biscuit came swimming in a skillet of medium-spicy cream, the texture not chunky like most Southern preparations but not thin either and truly delicious with a bright linger of Paprika plus what may be Cloves or Cinnamon.

Adding a second Biscuit with Jam for $3, half slathered in housemade Huckleberry Compote and the rest used to sop up residual Gravy, Huckleberry would also be prominently featured atop thick Yogurt and Berries, the extra-tangy base balanced by a bit of Wine and its overall effect a nice way to cool or refresh the palate between bites of Nunez’s city-best Chilaquiles made with Tortilla Strips that don’t get soggy plus smoky Red Sauce, shredded Pork and satin-smooth Black Beans.

Disregarding portion sizes, several of The Stove’s Entrees easily sharable despite prices ranging $14-15, it was for a trio of guests that four were requested, otherwise ubiquitous Chicken & Waffles here given character by spicy Syrup plus griddled Pasta and Cheddar while a Croque Madame offered with “Savory Cream” maybe not exactly Mornay, but seriously delicious though purists may also bicker that the Toast is thicker than it ought to be.

Ending sweet, one opening-day item and the other brand new, it is in the same vein as Unicorn Hot Chocolate that The Stove’s fluffy Flapjacks come topped in housemade Vanilla Cream and studded with Sprinkles, the addition of Noble Syrup left to the diner’s discretion (yes, and Vanilla over Bourbon in this case) while Winter’s “Honey Toast” is not what Spring Mountain Road regulars might expect, but instead cheffed-up by lightly caramelizing Bread around the edges before adding Brie, mixed Berries and just a bit of Mint.

FIVE STARS: While there isn’t a Chef in town who will say Henderson is a safe bet for progressive Cuisine it is by way of small adjustments, quality ingredients and genuine hospitality that Chefs Nunez and Commings have steadily generated a crowd since opening, each menu a little better than the last while the atmosphere and diversity of options creates a place accessible to all.

RECOMMENDED: Dark Chocolate Muffin, Vegan Lemon Cranberry Muffin, Biscuit and Chipotle Gravy, Chilaquiles, Croque Madame, Honey Toast.

AVOID: N/A, though the online menu is notably a bit out-of-date (accurate per photos above.)

TIP: 7a-3p Monday through Thursday and until four o’clock Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Those wishing to avoid a wait should show up before 9:30am or check-in by phone or online using TablesReady.

Meatball Sliders – Garlic Knots, Melted Provolone, Red Sauce, Fries

86th Street Square Pie – Mozzarella Cheese, Tomato Sauce, Romano Cheese, Olive Oil / Vodka Sauce, Sausage, Basil

Pizza – Pepperoni, Fresh Mozzarella, Basil, Mushrooms

Cannoli – Ricotta, Confectioner’s Sugar, Chocolate Chips

Dubbed “Retro Metro” by those in the know, a 1980’s décor well-preserved and era-appropriate tunes playing overhead, it was alongside friends from out of town that dinner was enjoyed at Metro Pizza on Decatur, owner John Arena cooking out of that shop on this particular Sunday and predictably sending out two splendid Pies including one off-menu request.

Still owned and operated by Sam Facchini and John since 1980, the original Metro actually now a Cuban joint but the shop at 4001 South Decatur Boulevard looking every bit the decade, it was seated in a large booth shortly after 6:00pm that Beverages were poured by attentive waiters, a Bread Basket soon arriving and tempting as ever from crisp Crust to pillowy center.

Having already enjoyed a substantial amount of Vegas dining earlier, but certainly not wanting to short-change folks from back home of the sort of Pizza rarely seen, it was starting light with Metro’s Meatballs on Garlic Knots that smiles were quickly noted, the arrival of an thick Sicilian immediately widening eyes as though “wow that looks heavy,” though in reality the lengthy cold-ferment provides lift without heft and whether topped in Red or specially-requested Vodka Sauce the results are unparalleled.

Wanting visitors to also taste New York Pizza the way it should be, not the Sbarro or Marco’s back in Toledo, it was in follow-up that America’s favorite toppings arrived with Fresh Mozzarella and golden edges featuring just the right amount of blister, each slice holding up with just a light fold and crunching softly on each bite.

Full but not about to leave without Dessert, Metro’s Carrot Cake always tempting but this group better suited for Cannolis, it was with one each served that all were quickly gone, the Shells filled-to-order with sweetened Cheese attesting to how little things can make a big difference and why Metro has been serving Las Vegas for so long.

FIVE STARS: Sometimes perspective is everything, and although Northwest Ohio was not a bad place to grow up the inherent limitations of an area where Papa John’s was considered “good” because it compares favorably to Little Caesars comes into focus whenever those who still live there visit. To say Metro Pizza would have been successful anywhere John and Sam chose to set-up shop might not be true, but there is no doubt that in any American city Metro would be amongst the best based on the combination of ingredients, passion and skill.

RECOMMENDED: 86th Street Square Pie, Meatball Sliders, Cannoli.

AVOID: N/A.

TIP: Vodka Sauce Square Pies are available by special request and a couple extra dollars.

They say the best Restaurants are the ones where you want to go back even before leaving, and with friends in town the opportunity to visit Bardot Brasserie again proved too tempting to resist, a table of seven taking their seats prior to noon for a feast from the hands of Chef Josh Smith and his team.

Now the fifteenth visit to Michael Mina’s first foray into French Cuisine, an unmitigated success thanks largely to his choice of executive Chef, it was once again after a podium greeting that guests were led past the grand bar to seats in the center, a Champagne toast kicking things off along with bottomless Coffee and two Pastry baskets filled with Viennoiserie including the city’s best Kouign Amann plus a Canele that has matured with time to rival those found in France.

Chatting over the din, a full-house on Sunday morning expected at Las Vegas’ premier Brunch, it was not long before Pastries were followed by Josh’s Fruit Plate highlighted by Blood Orange and Frozen Yogurt, those not wanting to fill-up too fast passing on sugared-Donuts made of Buckwheat but nonetheless succumbing to warm Baguettes with Butter far better than one will find in their home state of Ohio.

Moving next to several Bardot classics, items present since the Restaurant opened in January of 2015, it was tasting Snails for the first time that guests marveled at both texture and flavor, the Steak Tartare also a crowd pleaser thanks to the Herbs and fancy Potato Chips while Foie Gras was more polarizing, though that just meant more for those who love the creamy spread since nothing but a smear went back to the kitchen from two jars.

Following a Tasting Menu format to the extent possible, Fish arriving after Amuse and Appetizers, course three included recent favorites such as layered Endives dressed with Crab plus house-cured Salmon alongside dainty Profiteroles, and considering five visits in the past calendar-year Chef Smith also couldn’t resist testing out two new recipes including golden Salt Cod Fritters that are menu-ready plus Puntarelle Salad still in need of tweaking as thinly cut Chicory and Egg turned the Pork Skin soggy within seconds thus compromising the intended textural interplay.

Following next with Brunch Entrees, Bardot’s Quiche again beyond reproach from Crust to Custard, those seeking something a bit more meaty should not overlook the Breakfast Sandwich offering housemade Sausage, fluffy Eggs and Mimolette…unless of course they are starting to get full and are presented with Chef Smith’s Hunter’s Waffle that on this day came with Duck Breast from the Dinner Setup plus fragrant Black Truffles.

Never leaving North America’s top Brasserie without Dessert, both the billboard-boasted French Toast and oversized Chocolate Macaron deserving of signature status, it was after finishing most of these plus the majority of two Sticky Buns that a familiar cart arrived, the Winter season seeing Pineapple replaced by Pumpkin Spice and Hazelnut at the center of a Baked Alaska whose tableside flame is extinguished by gooey Butterscotch.

FIVE STARS: If you follow Josh Smith on Instagram it is quickly evident that this is a Chef who never stops trying to improve, the laborious process of perfecting Marble Rye Pate a Choux just one example, but then you stop in and realize again-and-again that everything tastes just as good as it looks and you can’t help but being impressed no matter how many times you visit.

RECOMMENDED: Canele, Kouign Amann, Pastrami Cured Salmon, Foie Gras Parfait, Hunter’s Waffle, Bardot Breakfast Sandwich, French Toast Baked Alaska, Brandade (if available.)

AVOID: N/A.

TIP: As above, Brandade and Puntarelle are not yet on the menu but follow @bardotjosh for these and other daily specials.

Rarely a fan of “pop-ups,” or “special guest chef” dinners it was largely to support Vetri Cucina that a two-top was booked for the Joe Beef collaboration, a 2012 visit memorable for both scene and Food while “The Art of Living According to Joe Beef: A Cookbook of Sorts” remains a personal favorite piece of literature amongst a fairly diverse collection.

Heavily promoted by both The Palms and Marc Vetri, his dining room on the 56th floor playing host to Chefs Frederic Morin and David McMillan plus their six course menu, it was in promotion of the Montreal duo’s second book titled “Surviving the Apocalypse” that guests were served, a total of $150 plus tax and tip garnering ten plates plus take home gifts including a copy of the book simply signed “Fred.”

No doubt a high profile event, several local Chefs and writers seen across the room, it was after chatting with Coop at the bar that seats were taken, Wine pairings declined on a work night and things starting off with housemade Toast alongside chunky Terrine of Fish, Pork and Gelatin plus a central plate of thinly sliced Celeriac whose earthy tones surprisingly worked well with the saline sweetness of Uni.

Offering each course similarly, one individual item plus another intended to be shared, round two presented rich ingredients in a manner focused on nuance, the fact that Morels are well out-of-season potentially why Soup afloat with Choux and Dark-Meat Chicken came across a little too salty while “life-hack” Foie Gras prepared in a Microwave was creamy and spreadable on lightly sweetened Seed-Bread.

Onward to a Fish Course, the traditional Tasting Menu progression not appreciated until later, it was somewhere between Panna Cotta and Quenelles de Brochet that “Trout Gateau Chaud” occupied space, the Crayfish Sauce traditional and all the better for it while Chef Vetri’s talents no doubt came in handy as relates to al dente Noodles slicked with Egg Yolk and Pepper around bits of smoked Eel.

Rounding out savories with Morin and McMillan’s interpretation of Veal Orloff, a dish from the 1800s featuring thinly sliced Meat and Mushrooms, it seems likely Sous-vide was employed to create this extra-tender version offering Winter Truffles and Forcemeat at the center, while a bowl of whipped Potatoes with Herb Butter felt mostly like an excuse to use Offal as the Sweetbreads did not “add” anything that couldn’t have been achieved by putting them on the plate.

Underutilizing Vetri’s Pastry kitchen to finish, a small bowl of Peaches in Syrup with thick Cream actually highlighted by the Short Bread, Mignardises did not particularly “fit” though they were enjoyable while Sugar Coated Chocolate Truffles intended as a take-home gift were soft, creamy and gone before reaching the door.

N/A: Difficult to assess as a whole, servers buzzing about in an attempt to keep up with staggered seating and a room likely turning at least four times the covers of a typical Wednesday, the Joe Beef x Vetri Cucina collaboration was nonetheless enjoyable for what it was, though having personally visited both Restaurants on a typical night the fact remains that pop-ups are never a fair display of the real deal.

Still lighting up the Arts District, and now adding an outpost inside The Stratosphere with Tivoli Village soon to follow, it was on a promise that James Trees agreed to cater from Esther’s Kitchen on Wednesday, Sous-Chef Ashley Nichole Winkelman tasked with the fourteen mile drive and making good time with a variety of choices from lunch menu.

To the best of anyone’s knowledge the Restaurant’s first off-site gig, though much like everything at Esther’s a product of passion and planning, it was on arrival that Chef Winkelman received assistance ascending three stories with boxes and trays, a bit of post-transport assembly yielding two Salads that were dressed just as they are at 1130 South Casino Center Boulevard, the Caesar in particular well-received by a group that usually turns their nose up at “healthy” thanks to Chili Oil that played well off Cheese and mild Dressing.

Turning next to Charcuterie, a full array of Esther’s Meats and Cheeses served on a platter, the only thing missing was Dylan Jobsz’s housemade Sourdough, though that was on full display in toasted format as part of a Vegetarian Mushroom Panini made gooey with two types of Cheese but kept from being too rich by way of Herbs and Citrus.

Finding the Sandwich versatile in sopping up Tomato Sauce, a vibrant Sugo served along with thick Meatballs featuring a fine grind and lots of flavor, those hoping for Pasta would not be let down by housemade Radiatorre that arrived still-hot and texturally beautiful thanks to Bread Crumbs and Cream Sauce, though two styles of Pizza traveled less-well in cardboard boxes – losing some of their visual appeal but at the same time still tempting enough that only three small slices (out of sixty) were left at day’s end.

N/A: Making it blog policy to not ‘rate’ places based on catering alone it is with big thanks to Ashley, James and the team that they agreed to try something different on Wednesday, the idea to #supportlocal always intended to support businesses like Esther’s Kitchen just as they have helped build and support the big changes happening in the Arts District.

RECOMMENDED: Radiatorre, Caesar Salad, Mushroom Panini, Meat + Cheese, Polpette.

AVOID: Like any Pie of its kind the fluffy Sourdough Crust loses something the minute it enters a box.

TIP: Despite what the Website says 28 days later, Brunch is offered 10a-3p on Saturday and Sunday while lunch takes place from 11am until…who knows? The Website still says they open at 5:00pm

Migrating once again, this time from The Market to Juice Stars, it was for Catering that David Mozes and Peter Bastien were called upon last Tuesday, the owners of Bronze Café this time offering to prepare a special Middle Eastern menu instead of the usual delicious Salads and Sandwiches.

Now found just around the corner from Carson Kitchen, though big plans are in the works for westward expansion, it was exactly on time that Mr. Mozes arrived on the third floor with a pull-cart loaded in trays, cold kept separate from warm so that everything was temperature appropriate for both halves of two lunch shifts.

A change of pace from the usual, though a majority-Hispanic staff still finds Mediterranean Food less desirable than Pizza or Barbeque, it was after full descriptions of each item that most gravitated towards creamy Hummus, Pita and Kabob, overall approval leading others to experiment further with at least two shocked to learn Baba Ganoush is Eggplant since they enjoyed the roasted Spread steeped with Garlic so much.

Further impressing with boneless Chicken Thighs, the bold herbal blend playing well off tangy Sauce, it was perhaps to be expected that Falafel was not a hit with most though the texture was beautiful and oilless, though what did surprise was the fact that most everyone enjoyed Jeweled Rice perfumed by Saffron and Cardamom plus occasional bits of Fruit and Nuts.

Mostly enjoying Salads, though the amount of Parsley in Peter’s Tabouli may exceed the threshold of some, it was after a second serving of Carrot Tzimmes that more of the Vegetable came by way of Bronze Café’s Carrot Cake, the fact that it is Vegan still shocking as is the Apple Pie that on this occasion was far more flavorful than when previously tasted at The Market.

Excited to see Baklava, presumably also Vegan as no Butter could be tasted amidst Honey and Pine Nuts, it was from here that many Bronze Café favorites took the spotlight, all of them good and in particular the Strawberry Cookie and Pumpkin Spice, but still none as delicious as the Peanut Butter Snickerdoodle that melts on the tongue slowly as served but even more beautifully after being warmed up.

N/A: Making it blog policy to not ‘rate’ places based on catering alone Bronze Café at Juice Stars nonetheless deserves top marks for always coming up aces, whether with their Organic Greens and Sammiches or in this case going off menu and creating a Middle Eastern Feast capped off by Baklava and many of the favorites fans have come to know and love.

RECOMMENDED: Hummus, Babaganoosh, Falafel, Carrot Tzimmes, Jeweled Rice, Moroccan Chicken Thighs, Ground Beef Kabobs, The Peanut Butter Snickerdoodle, The Carrot Cake, The Strawberry Cookie, The Pumpkin Spice Cookie.

AVOID: Tabouli was a bit heavy with Parsley.

Open now for twenty months inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino it was alongside family that dinner was enjoyed at MB|Steak, the resort’s pending transition to Virgin doing nothing to slow down a Restaurant that finally seems to be garnering the sort of recognition it deserves despite fierce competition.

Still located in a cloistered space just off the gaming floor, close proximity to Magic Mike Live making both the upstairs and lower Bar popular destinations for young women in search of a Drink, it is after checking in at a hostess podium outside that dinner guests are led into a room featuring low-ceilings and dim lighting, the central chandelier “like something out of Game of Thrones” per one guest, though booths around the edges offer plenty of room to spread out plus added brightness.

Built by the Morton Brothers as a way to honor their family’s rich history, a story that starts in Michigan but grows by way of Chicago presented inside the front cover of the diverse menu, it is from affable servers that specials are presented as options are perused, everything from Food to Beverage 10-to-20% less than on-Strip despite quality that is at least equal if not better than the majority.

Toqued by Patrick Anthony Munster after a decade at Steve Wynn’s signature Steakhouse, his tableside carving now a popular feature for shared Steaks such as the Double Porterhouse and 26oz Tomahawk, it was after perhaps ten minutes that three Cocktails arrived including one involving Cotton Candy, the flavors all sweet but not overwhelmingly so with MB Paloma standing out thanks to bubbly Fever Tree Tonic.

Wasting no time making decisions for the meal’s first two courses, each guest ordering their own Appetizer to start, it was with one basket of cheesy Monkey Bread gone that a second arrived quickly, this largely used to sop up remaining drops of Lobster Bisque enriched by Brandy and Egg Yolk which cascades over thick-cut Bacon that is grilled and then lacquered with Maple Syrup atop a bed of Frisee.

Not forgetting Popcorn Shrimp served in their appropriate container, the two Sauces each spicy but not “hot,” it was with the last of these gone that a cart was rolled up with Chef Muster steering, the carving of Chateaubriand soon to follow and each medium-rare bite lean yet supple and enjoyable on its own, but even better with Black Truffle Sauce or Patrick’s signature Salt featuring Worchester.

Adding on a Burger to see how MB|Steak stacks up, the grind tender but flavor a little lost beneath more Bacon and melted Cheese out of Wisconsin, it was having already tasted Lobster Mac and King Crab Corn last time that Sides instead featured Crispy Onions, Potatoes and Polenta, the Gruyere-based Gratin earning wide praise as did the creamy concoction formerly labeled “Grits,” though the thin Strings with Paprika were unfortunately too much breading and not enough of the good stuff.

Never missing a chance to taste Mickey Harden’s Desserts, the Executive Pastry Chef of Hard Rock Hotel Las Vegas responsible for all five of the Morton Brother’s choices, it is spinning playful on traditional steakhouse finales that each item is built “for two,” the Crème Brulee fairly standard save for textbook Madelines made for dipping while Lemon Meringue Pie is also nice and light with plenty of tartness beneath airy Egg Whites and Raspberries.

Going richer for the rest, the “New York” Cheesecake properly textured and complimented by caramelized Bananas plus Popcorn, it was admittedly a bit unexpected that Triple Chocolate Truffle Cake featured Mousse rather than a Sponge beneath melted Ganache, though it was no surprise at all that Chef Harden’s multi-layered Carrot Cake remains the best in Las Vegas thanks to thin ribbons of Cream Cheese Frosting and plenty of Baking Spices topped in roasted Pineapple.

FOUR STARS: Acknowledging that MB|Steak never set out to compete with the likes of Jean Georges or Bazaar Meat in terms of price or grandeur the Morton Brothers have nonetheless created an enjoyable experience at Hard Rock, and with prices lower than almost any Steakhouse on Las Vegas Boulevard Chefs Munster and Harden are each creating Cuisine that offers substantial variety while the room and service both feel far more intimate than sprawling spaces like SW Steakhouse or CUT.

RECOMMENDED: MB Paloma, Cheese Bread, Maine Lobster Bisque, 22oz Chateaubriand, Potato Gratin, Layered Carrot Cake, New York Cheese Cake.

AVOID: MB Steak Burger and Crispy Onions both get a little lost in their surroundings.

TIP: Sunday thru Thursday 5:00PM to 10PM, Friday and Saturday 5:00PM to 11PM

Having last visited Herringbone’s weekend Brunch in April 2017 it was in celebration of upcoming changes that two adults and a child sat down on Saturday, Chefs Marty Lopez and Nyko Christian joined by some new faces in the kitchen while Ceferin Oliva and his front of house staff catered to the needs of a diverse crowd including some dude dining in his bath robe and two parties of dancing bachelorettes.

From the very beginning popular with its target audience, a price of $69 per diner inclusive of soft beverages, multiple live-stations plus ten plates from the kitchen, it was with most tables adding drink packages ranging $35 to $95 that a lively crowd sprawled from indoors to the temperature-controlled patio, a DJ spinning tunes keeping things lively while professional and NCAA Basketball played on Televisions throughout the room.

Still focused on the “Fish Meats Field” concept that Brian Malarkey sold to Hakkasan, Ingredients on display besting any Buffet in Las Vegas save for perhaps Bally’s $100 Sterling Brunch, it is with Seafood that many begin their afternoon at Herringbone, freshly shucked Oysters popular to the point where those shucking them frequently fall behind thus leaving diners with the difficult choice of Lobster Tails versus pre-cut Crab Legs or jumbo Cocktail Shrimp with a variety of Sauces.

Additionally offering Tuna and Salmon, the latter smoked and served with traditional condiments while the former finds its way into rolled Sushi and two styles of Poke, those craving additional island flavors will be happy to know Herringbone does not skimp when it comes to Loco Moco, the mandatory two-scoops of Rice here crowned with a Farm Egg and ground domestic Wagyu plus fragrant Truffle Gravy.

Offering plenty of healthy options beyond Shellfish, roasted Chicken from the carvery plus Smoothies, grilled Vegetables and Salads all made from organic ingredients, it was leaving some Rice behind that attention focused on these plus Cheese and Charcuterie, both focused on crowd-favorites and thus basic but enjoyable while a Parfait of Fruit, Granola and Greek Yogurt stands out in terms of taste as well as texture.

Next served a special, Herringbone’s Fish Tacos instead filled with Softshell Crab that had been battered and fried, fans of Steak and Eggs were further impressed by lightly seared Beef served alongside Tortillas and Eggs plus housemade Salsa, though surprisingly the ubiquitous Avocado Toast fared even better thanks to thick-cut Multigrain Bread and Goat Cheese that plays well off Honey Vinaigrette.

Saving room for sweets, though not before crispy-skinned Duck arrived alongside a cigar of Confit and Pomegranate Arils, those who enjoy Bananas Foster will undoubtedly take a liking to Panettone with Bruleed Fruit and thick Caramel, though if forced to choose just one it would be hard to place this before a fluffy stack of Pancakes featuring Chocolate Chips and Whipped Ricotta in the Batter plus Orange Segments on top.

Utilizing Aria’s Bake Shop for petite Desserts to finish, the pre-filled Cannoli’s Shell expectedly compromised and Key Lime Pie lacking in terms of Citrus, it was with the youngster happily eating M&Ms that adults focused on a baked Donut filled with Jam and Red Velvet Whoopie Pies, though the pint-size Pecan Pie and buttery Pound Cake were also good.

FIVE STARS: Best judged as a separate entity from Herringbone’s outstanding Dinner service the weekend Brunch offers a fun experience for persons of all backgrounds without compromising on ingredient quality, and although $69 is not cheap consider the fact that most places on-strip are charging $3-4 per Oyster or Taco, $16-18 for Avocado Toast and $15+ for a stack of plain Pancakes before judging too quickly.

RECOMMENDED: Nori Crisps, Lobster, Greek Yogurt Parfait, Fish Tacos, Farmer’s Market Toast, Panettone French Toast, Orange Ricotta Chocolate Chip Pancakes, Raspberry Pound Cake, Pecan Pie

AVOID: Cannoli, Key Lime Pie. Also note the Duck is not currently available at lunch, but rather a test-plate pending for dinner.

TIP: Brunch runs 10a-3p on both Saturday and Sunday, the drink packaged offered with no time-limit like so many other places for those with the that kind of stamina.

Officially opened in the waning days of 2018, the answer to “what will inhabit the former Restaurant Charlie?” was finally answered by Mott 32, a reported thirty-plus-million dollar build-out bringing one of Hong Kong’s most well-known Restaurants to The Palazzo and carrying with it many of the original recipes plus several Las Vegas exclusives.

Named after the location of New York’s first Chinese Market, and focused on making Cantonese banquet cuisine more accessible, it is by way of a bar filled with tightly-clothed staff that guests are led through a space beautifully designed by Joyce Wang, the use of fabric including gold-threaded silk immediately creating a feeling of opulence that carries from the “Boom Boom Room” with a feathered chandelier to private dining rooms in back.

Bringing in Nathan Grates as General Manager, past-experience at Bardot Brasserie and Sage giving the young man a strong background that is already exhibited by severs who are professional but more than capable of reading a table and having fun, it was after a brief tour of the space that seats were taken at a booth with full-view of a kitchen in two parts with both in non-stop motion.

Owned by Malcolm Wood and Maximal Concepts, the Mott 32 brand’s 2014 birth having since spawned a Vancouver outpost with another coming soon to Bangkok, it is from a menu divided across several pages that guests are invited to choose from items both traditional and modern, the Cocktails following suit at a cost of $18 each with most a mix of East and West such that Fruits like Lychee find themselves accompanied by Pisco or in situations where Jasmine Tea is mixed with Tequila.

Eschewing white tablecloths in favor of dark wood, though crisp linen napkins and custom china are not forgotten, most tables will likely find themselves starting with Dim Sum before moving on to more hearty items, a cost of $12-$22 yielding three to four pieces of items such as delicate Xiao Long Bao filled with fiery Soup or tender Siu Mai offering a poached Quail Egg and gratuitous umami.

Certainly not forgetting baked items, braised Wagyu at the center of golden Puff Pastry delicious and the lightest Pork Buns ever encountered even better, it is that same Iberico Pig that is roasted to create one of Mott 32’s signatures, supple Flesh lacquered in Honey producing a rich mouth-feel and flavor that starts sweet before giving way to a porky sapor that lingers.

Impressed to this point, though the best was yet to come, it was using razor-thin slices of Beef as a delivery mechanism for Sesame and Sichuan Peppercorn that each piece of Crispy Air Dried Angus Beef melted on the tongue, the small bowl of Hot & Sour Soup to follow a nice palate cleanser before tableside presentation of Dry-Aged Peking Duck that comes first with crispy Skin ready to be placed on translucent Pancakes, and then as a cleaver-cut plate including Bones that is spicy, crunchy and well-worth getting messy for.

Not done yet, a bowl of Soy-slicked Noodles with Pork simple yet pristine, it was alongside this that Mott 32’s Triple Cooked Short Rib again showed great technique applied to superior product, the $88 tab not insubstantial but the portion sharable and each bite a study in contrast as skin crackled before yielding supple Meat and nicely rendered Fat beneath.

Repeatedly infusing traditional recipes with modernity, but at Dessert being sure to specify Classic versus Western, it was while sipping Tea that two of the latter were presented, the “Bamboo Green Forest” essentially a deconstructed Matcha Cake with Gingerbread while Mott 32’s Panna Cotta trends floral but avoids becoming cloying thanks to dazzling Lychee Sorbet plus Raspberries both whole and pureed.

FOUR AND A HALF STARS: Setting aside costs, though not entirely able to ignore such an important point when assessing Mott 32 as a whole, for those with the means Maximal Concepts has brought Las Vegas something truly special and although not a Restaurant for those who think “Chinese Food should be cheap” the Palazzo can now lay claim to containing a true competitor to Jasmine or Wing Lei, but with more edge.

RECOMMENDED: Anna Wong, Crispy Sugar Coated BBQ Iberico Pork Bun, Barbecue Pluma Iberico Pork, Crispy Air Dried Angus Beef, Apple Wood Roasted 42 Day Aged Peking Duck, Crispy Triple Cooked Wagyu Beef Short Rib.

AVOID: N/A, but Hot & Sour Iberico Pork Shanghainese Soup Dumplings are not for the faint of heart or timid of palate.

TIP: The Peking Duck second course is available as the Spicy Crispy Duck Rack or Lettuce Cups at similar cost.

Ending 2018 with Rosallie’s Almond Croissant again on the year-end top-10 list, the flaky layers and hand-ground Almond Filling still better than any Viennoiserie tasted in the past 365-days, it was in celebration of Epiphany that January brought about Galette des Rois, and like everything else from Jonathan and Christophe the result was exemplary.

Served in celebration of The Three Wise Men’s visit to Christ, the name King Cake not to be confused with Sugar-shellacked braids offered during pre-Lenten Mardi Gras, Rosallie’s version of the Cake takes on a traditional form featuring myriad layers of Puff Pastry wrapped around Almond Paste, an Egg Wash and plenty of Butter browning the top and allowing higher than average baking temperatures.

Pre-ordered for $34 and enough to feed 10-12, the “feve” a tiny porcelain favor hidden inside which gives its finder the title of queen/king for the day, there is additionally a $5.99 individually-portioned Almond Pie featuring the same technique sold at 6090 South Rainbow Boulevard, and of course the standard array of new and old favorites including miniature Croissants and a Valentine’s Day White Lady filled with housemade Raspberry Filing.

FIVE STARS: Still Las Vegas’ best choice for French Pastry Jonathan and the team at Rosallie have rolled from Buche de Noel to Galette des Rois without missing a beat, and whether for Breakfast, Lunch or early Dinner Le French Café remains a cozy respite with the sort of environment and service one simply doesn’t find many places these days.

Mostly viewing “fusion” as an inauthentic means to please a wider variety of customers it was with interest but skepticism that Best Friend was approached on Saturday, Roy Choi’s first foray into Las Vegas a long way from the Kogi Trucks that made him famous but the space at Park MGM somehow pulling off the combination of Bodega, Restaurant and Bar with polish and poise.

Located proximate to the former home of Andre’s, recently-opened Eataly looming large next door, it is passing by neon that reads “Roy Choy Is My Best Friend” that diners will find themselves surrounded by merchandise both for show and for purchase, the hostess stand easily missed next to translucent red curtains dividing Bar from Dining Room where Hip Hop plays at modest volume.

Keeping Television at the Bar, the flowing interior instead focused on murals and illuminated street scenes beneath hanging plants, it was in a booth on the left half that two guests were seated with menus presented, the server dressed in Adidas cool but helpful in a manner that works far more effectively than the typical nonchalance of many casual Restaurants opened in the past decade.

Dubbed as a “Korean BBQ” joint based on Chef Choy’s history, though there are graciously no signs of DIY grills aside from those manned by cooks in the spotless kitchen, it was after lengthy perusal of Drinks and menu sections such as “Bowls,” “Pots,” and “L.A. Sh*t” that decisions were made, two small servings of Banchan whetting palates alongside complimentary warm Hawaiian Rolls that are enjoyable on their own but better saved for later when they prove useful for sopping up Sauces.

Opting for one Cocktail, the savory Tequila base with fresh Watermelon and a salted rim right up the lady’s alley, it was alongside a colorful Salad that Uni Dynamite Rice was handed over, the former using salt and spice to blend Radish, Chicories and Onion while whole Tongues of Sea Urchin rested atop the later imbuing Grains both fully cooked and a bit crisp with umami.

Going full-fusion for the next two, Roy’s Tacos that built an empire seeing a price hike but otherwise delicious with plenty of Marinated Beef that marries well to Salsa and julienne Cabbage, it is hidden directly above these under “L.A. Sh*t” that guests will find Slippery Shrimp, the idea of Walnut Prawns, Shrimp Mayo or whatever it is called spun on its ear by all the same textures but fire where sweetness is expected.

Returning to tradition for Pots and Entrees, a Half-Rack of Lamb for $44 not incongruent with other Casino Restaurants and here prepared magnificently rare along with Baby Bok Choy plus complex Chimichurri bright with Cumin and Cilantro, those looking for value would be well-advised to invest similar dollars in a cauldron of Cod, the sharpness of Tamarind countered by Noodles, Herbs and what might by Honey in a portion that could easily be shared by three or four.

Turning sweets over to Park MGM Executive Pastry Chef Angibeau Philippe, his calendar undoubtedly crowded by such a rapidly evolving property, it is nonetheless with French precision that each Dessert is plated, the “Sundae for Two” largely for show but not skimping on complexity while the $10 Date Cake and Mango Budino are both showstoppers, the former giving Gordon Ramsay’s Sticky Toffee Pudding a serious run for its money while the Fruit Pudding matches Best Friend’s Cod Pot in terms of being delicious from beginning to end with no two bites alike.

FOUR AND A HALF STARS: Attempting to judge every Eatery as an individual product of intent, execution and overall guest experience the only thing keeping Best Friend from a perfect score is that the menu seems to wander, but from someone with minimal interest in Korean Barbecue or Food Trucks everything about this place (so far) works harmoniously and its willingness to put big flavors front-and-center is a huge breath of fresh air for the tourist corridor.

RECOMMENDED: Uni Dynamite Rice, Slippery Shrimp, Tamarind Black Cod Stew, Mango Budino, Date Cake.

AVOID: Though they are really good, those expecting Street Taco prices will be disappointed that Roy Choi’s signature dish sells for about $2 a bite.

TIP: If ordering the Budino, which every table should, be aware that the green base is Sugar and consider adding a pinch to each bite as it dramatically changes the experience from great to whatever superlative is a step-up from there.

Having first experienced James Trees’ Cuisine during Brunch at Superba Food + Bread it was moments after hearing that Esther’s Kitchen was now open at 10:00am on weekends that a group was gathered, the result eight friends old and new indulging in 19 dishes including 16 new ones over the course of two hours and much conversation.

Not about to discuss the critically acclaimed space again, though those still unaware can look here, here or here, it was with sunlight flooding through windows and REM playing overhead that greetings were offered by Paul Argier, an educated staff then taking over as Chef Trees and his team tended to matters in the kitchen.

Quieter during the day, though that will likely soon change, it was with guests opting for Water, Juice or Tea that Brunch soon began, Drop Biscuits from Baker Dylan Jobsz at first questioned as “undercooked” by some though in reality quite impressive for something not laminated and riddled with Pork that plays well off creamy Herb Butter.

Heavily focused on Toast, and rightfully so considering Dylan’s housemade Sourdough, it was beginning light with lemony Ricotta plus Hazelnuts and Honey that each Slice was carefully divided, a tongue-in-cheek “yep!” following one topped with Avocado doing nothing to diminish great ingredient quality and texture which carries over to smoked Trout and Cream Cheese that all but the pickiest Lower East Side New Yorker will enjoy.

Temporarily veering a little sweet, both housemade Pistachio Butter and Raspberry Jam spread thick beneath Lemon Zest and coarse Salt, it was after this that Chef Trees sent forth Sin City’s only proper Omelette not served on-Strip, the fold around Boursin and smoky Tomatoes light like a Soufflé though soft scrambled Eggs mixed with Chorizo or Mushrooms and served on crunchy Sourdough were not much heavier.

Hearing some say the combination of Chorizo and Chili Oil was a bit too spicy, those same folks smartly avoiding housemade Porchetta served like a Benedict with Chipotle Hollandaise and sliced orange Peppers, it was with cooling Yogurt and Rooster Boy Granola that fire was extinguished before moving on to fried Bread Pudding dotted with Blueberries, Lyle’s Syrup adding restrained sweetness that is further reined in by Crème Fraiche.

Seeing many getting full at this point, portions far larger than prices would suggest, it was mostly a matter of timing that saw an Egg White Frittata decorated in Vegetables and Grapefruit have less impact that it may have earlier, same too for a Vegan Grain Bowl featuring smoky Beans plus a tangle of Greens and Mushrooms.

Expecting great things from Trees’ Polenta, the version offered at dinner here thinned by Sunnyside Eggs but given back texture by a Parmesan Cheese lattice, those seeking a top-notch Breakfast Sandwich will be happy to know Esther’s trails not far behind Bardot for Sin City’s best thanks to house Sausage, Cheese and Greens while crunchy Potatoes on the side will make guests wonder why they’ve ever settled for Hash Browns.

Finishing new items with a stack of Pancakes featuring lots of Ricotta, the resultant texture far fluffier than anyone might assume, it is by way of Lemon Butter and plenty of Blueberries cooked in Sugar with Hibiscus that each bite is subtly different, the same to be said of Rigatoni Carbonara that is entirely Brunch-appropriate thanks to Pork and Eggs, as too is the Bacon Pizza with Onions and a touch of sweetness added by Saba.

FIVE STARS: Fulfilling a “Coming Soon” promise dating back nearly a year, Brunch at Esther’s Kitchen has proved worth waiting for, and as it seems many have not yet gotten the news now is the time to go before lines begin to form.

RECOMMENDED: Prosciutto + Fontina Biscuits, Smoked Ocean Trout Toast, Pistachio Butter Toast, Omelette, Chorizo Toast, Bread Pudding French Toast, Polenta, Ricotta Pancakes, Bacon Pizza.

AVOID: The Egg White Frittata is a nice choice for those counting calories, but otherwise there are much better choices.

TIP: Despite what the Website says 11 days later, Brunch is offered 10a-3p on Saturday and Sunday.

Having come to view Station Casinos as a much more local company than the Strip’s big resorts it was on the promise of good Barbecue closer than Henderson that Texas Station was visited last Wednesday, recently-opened Beaumont’s Southern Kitchen not only serving Food far better than it *needs* to be, but additionally offering a high quality overall guest experience.

Located approximately twenty minutes from the center of town, an address technically in North Las Vegas likely not previously on any ‘foodie’ map of Sin City, it was days before the end of 2018 that Beamont’s quietly opened, Chef Joseph Kudrak’s involvement enough to stir interest though the real day-to-day operations are left to Executive Chef Amy Bearden and Pit Master Michael Ross.

Truly a scratch kitchen, everything from Sauces and Sides to Pickles made on-site daily, guests will find Beaumont’s located straight from entry past the Sportsbook, cigarette smoke from the Casino Floor slowly replaced by the smell of burning Hickory while the sound of slots dissipates in favor of a soundtrack that is appropriately Southern but not entirely Country.

Cutting a wide swath through regional BBQ, references to Nashville and St. Louis made in addition to the obvious Texas-standard, it is with Cocktails or Beer in hand that many will wish to begin their experience, a fruity concoction called Granny’s Smith the best of three tasted while teetotalers will be delighted to know the South is well represented by bottled Big Red and Abita Root Beer on Tap out of Louisiana.

Already proving popular with Texas Station regulars, a dedicated and important group in determining Beaumont’s long term success, it was by educated servers that plates were presented and explained, both Chicken Fried Bacon and similarly treated Ribs an easy sell as each is smoked, lightly-fried and delicious while a dish called “Bacon & Eggs” doubles down on texture by way of creamy Yolks and crispy Whites on a stack of Onion Rings topped by Bacon.

Expectedly not a “diet friendly” menu, though Salads including a cleverly-named Wedge are available while smoked Meat is great for Keto, it was next that Mexico represented the South by way of Street Corn on the Cob, though it would be difficult to cite a specific origin for “The Doobie” Burrito loaded with chopped Brisket, Cheddar and Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.

Moving next to ‘cue, an enormous smoker located behind the kitchen running 24/7 to allow for several cuts and proteins, those seeking Beamont’s best are advised to focus attention first on Chicken and Turkey that both come out moist and smoky, the spicy house Sausage also excellent inside snappy Skin while Brisket is simply adorned and good, but bound to improve with a little more age on the smoker.

Less sold on Pulled Pork, the texture a bit stringy and dry without adding lots of Sauce, it was along with Ribs that slide right of the Bone that sides were tasted, the “Banging Beans” unfortunately lacking flavor in comparison to others in town though Chef Bearden’s family recipe for Collards produces remarkable tenderness and a deep, porky sapor.

Additionally impressing with Potato Salad that omits Mustard and Slaw that adds it, both unique and refreshing between bites of Meat, it is from the Bakery that logs of Cornbread prove sweet, tender and compelling enough to eat more than one of, a situation that can quickly become dangerous as it is imperative to also save room for Dessert.

Frequently nailing Southern staples across the savories, and similarly exploring a diversity of Comfort Foods in terms of sweets, it is beginning with cast-iron Peach Cobbler topped tableside with sizzling Caramel that guests are invited to experience several plates portioned for sharing, the presence of Chess Pie all one really needs to know Beaumont’s has done its homework and here particularly lovely thanks to buttery Crust, plenty of Citrus and an enormous spiral of Whipped Cream.

Not forgetting Chocolate lovers, a Black Bottom Pie’s richness barely kept in check by airy Molasses, it is going even bigger that the Chocolate Pecan Ball presents like Fried Ice Cream studded by Pecans while “I’d Éclair” spins Banana Pudding French by way of Pate a Choux that stands up well to not only the housemade Pudding but liberally added Whipped Cream and thick Fudge.

FOUR STARS: Although many have disparaged Las Vegas Barbecue for decades there seems to be a movement to improve as of late, and although the success of Beaumont’s Southern Kitchen will hinge on its acceptance by Texas Station regulars the experience thus far attests to a team willing to go the extra mile in hopes of luring in non-traditional clientele including those who are far more interested in Food than gambling.

RECOMMENDED: Granny’s Smith, Chicken Fried Bacon, Bacon & Eggs, Smoked Turkey Breast, Smoked Chicken, Hot Links, Honey Baked Cornbread, Collards, I’d Éclair, Key Lime Chess Pie.

AVOID: Pulled Pork was stringy and Beau’s Banging Beans lacked flavor beyond the Sauce. Brisket was good, but until there is more hours on the smoker shouldn’t be served with all the char removed as leaner pieces lose their smokiness.

TIP: 4:00pm until 10:00pm Sunday through Thursday, until 11:00pm on Friday and Saturday.

Proud to have put over $38,000 in the pockets of local business since May of 2018 it was kicking-off #supportlocal 2019 that Naked City Pizza was called upon Wednesday, owner Chris Palmeri not only making but delivering the meal complete with plates, utensils plus boxes for leftovers…and even doing so fifteen minutes early.

Now the third time catering to an office on West Warm Springs, a building not exactly close to any of Naked City Pizza’s five locations, it was nonetheless with everything temperature appropriate that first-lunchers called dibs on choice Slices, Pepperoni predictably proving popular atop melted Mozzarella and housemade Sauce with plenty of Herbs, as did plump Chicken Wings tossed in Hot Sauce by the Buffalo-native Chef who has no worries of losing his right to visit home since all fifty were gone within minutes.

Additionally sending Grandma Palmeri’s Meatballs with Garlic Buns plus extra Sauce for dipping, the springy orbs featuring almost zero filler easily among Sin City’s best, it is those same Meatballs that are sliced and used to top Naked City’s famous Guinea Pie along with creamy Garlic Sauce and Ricotta, though for those seeking something truly unique Naked City’s “Back Home Pie” is equally worth checking out as Sauce and Cheese are blended to create a completely different texture topped in housemade Sausage plus crispy cups of Pepperoni.

Not overlooking Salads, the housemade Caesar, Ranch and Blue Cheese Dressings all attesting to a place not fond of shortcuts, it was by request that Dessert was brought from Chris’ brother Michael at the El Cortez Hotel, his recent baking experiments having produced “Cherry-Lemon-Ricotta Loaf” that eats like Coffee Cake with more levity and plenty of Citrus wrapped around pockets of stewed Fruit.

N/A: Making it blog policy to not ‘rate’ places based on catering alone there is a reason Naked City Pizza has been serving Sin City for nearly a decade, and so long as Christopher and Michael continue to work as hard as they always have there is little doubt that any order will delight a crowd whether at the Shop or delivered.

RECOMMENDED: Meatball Skillet, Back Home Pie, Guinea Pie, Chicken Wings, Cherry-Lemon-Ricotta Loaf.

AVOID: N/A
